  3. whats best for zooanthids in terms of lighting and current? cracker???!!!
  4. have a read of this (and click Next to read the next 15 or so pages) All about T5/T8's... http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/nlpip/lightingAnswers/lat5/abstract.asp

    refugium

mine doesn't. skimmer outlet goes to sump. refugium outlet goes to sump. EXACTLY!
  6. yes of course, some ideas better than you could imagine depends on what you're trying to achieve (eg: how your tank will be aquscaped) im stealing steve weasts idea and having no lighting too close to the edge or back to give it the sense of a larger area. also taking his idea of having a false background (piece of perspex probably) that is removeable for cleaning. mine will probably be 1m deep so there should be plenty of room. not enough if you're keeping a moderate selection of acro's. my current tank is 1500 long and I run 3 x 150W'ers and that is not enough. with 4 x T5's (going on shortly) i believe it will be though
  7. 32W was the standard I thought?
  8. i still got mine, if anyone needs one to run a QT or other type of small tank, you are most welcome to it. used but still works. pickup only

    refugium

you could consider doing what i did and have the main overflow pipe go from tank to fuge; halfway down the pipe 'T' it off so water goes to the skimmer then to sump. whatever the skimmer doesnt need will flow the fuge. fuge also flows to sump. skimmer has ball valve prior to it meaning i can close it and perform maintenance on the skimmer whilst the fuge handles all the flow. that actually reminds me i want to put a ball valve onto the end of the refugium pipe to see if I shut if off whether the skimmer will handle all the flow. its restricted from 40mm down to 25mm prior to the skimmer but I dont see why it couldnt handle that volume (about 4,000lph) i still think an upstream fuge gravity feeding the display is the best way to go - but typically not possible for most setups. i guestimate flow to be about 60/40 to the skimmer/fuge. will measure this tomorrow as i want to find out exactly what it is! anyway see the last pages of my thread if you want some ideas.
  10. Get an Iwaki 70RLT or 100RLT that will do it Good idea if you have the space, redundancy incase one fails I'd be one of them I think closed loops are brilliant - just dont base your opinion of them on my setup! My next one will be simple yet effective. It's the best way to get water movement under the reef rack (which I think is more and more crucial the more i see a build up of crud where my spray bar doesnt reach) If done properly it can be stealthed very well and holes positioned in areas that powerheads could not otherwise get too. All cleaning of the pump is done outside the tank for easier maintenance. Biggest drawback is cost of plumbing plus more risk if not done properly! BTW, tanks looking great. Needs to be bigger with the space you have there though

    pipe cleaning

interestingly when i had to put the 'T' into the 40mm downpipe when adding the skimmer last week, I had a look inside the pipe. there was a very light coating of brown algae - about what you'd get inside your skimmer neck after an hour! (in other words, bugger all) other than it not being worthwhile, it would be very difficult! transparent piping is a little different as the light can cause the algae to grow.
  12. thanks for the thought feelers. i disagree with pies though, he rated it too high that looks sh1t!
  13. lids off for me, as cracker says ya dont want to reduce light intensity (depending on what you're keeping of course) good idea. rip little blennie
  14. nicks was giving it away and what was left over went in a planter box. i have frags sitting in my garden
  15. you got any other nice acro frags?

    power cut

so true, to a certain degree (excuse the pun ) Lack of O2 is a big killer, hence another reason why water movement is so important. Has anyone got any sources for battery driven powerheads? I wanted to rig one up (so that it comes on when the power goes off) in the display tank ages ago but could not find anything decent.
  17. buy this then sell it when you are done http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/4ft-ta ... 10946.html
