  1. pretty basic looking skyline anyway lucky is an understatement. some of them...
  2. cyclopeeze, when i can be bothered, used to every 2nd night, now only once a week. mix it with saltwater then feed the tank (squirt in with a syringe around 'clusters' of corals)
  3. that is fantastic, he is certainly a legend in his own right

    Skimmer test

Fay, I dont see at any stage Jimmy bagging Deltec's? He simply asked the question about how would reef "be more than happy to start selling Deltecs for no profit all?". If he says he's not in it for the money....(shall i quote for you???) So why does he offer me a Deltec AP902 for over $2k+ when I know for a fact that his buy price is considerably lower than this? That sounds like he's in it for profit - and understandably, its an import business. But comments like that quoted above is just bullshit and a complete sales pitch. Say it like it is. Jimmy - a completely fair question if you ask me.
  5. hell thats what i thought too, that would have sucked! (excuse the pun )

    New Reflectors

they look evil doesnt look like much room for heat to escape though?
  7. Finally taken the plunge and upgrading my skimmer to a Deltec AP902. So, that means my Deltec TS1060 in-sump skimmer is up for sale. For anyone interested see here... http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/deltec ... 10294.html Next step is plumbing up the overflow so the skimmer can be gravity fed. Will be a T plumbing to water goes to the skimmer and refugium. The refugium output will go straight into the sump which will feed the display via the return pump. The refugium will receive a substantially lower flow rate and can also be "tapped off" separate to the main system to act as a QT tank. The existing location in the sump where the in-sump skimmer sits will now hold the zeovit reactor and fluidised rowaphos reactor. Im also adding another 'sump' to the system - it's mainly to hold the new skimmer and calcium reactor (incase anything leaks, it stays in the main system) Oh, and the chiller will also be gravity fed from a second 'T' plumbing. Well thats the plan anyway, interesting to see how it comes out
  8. none of my photo's are enhanced. i dont feel so bad now actually my acro's are starting to colour up nicely. i think they will do even better once the new big mutha skimmer goes in. if they dont, i'll just have to brush up on my photoshop skills and make my tank look better than it really is
  9. heheee, i popped down to arkles bay last night - missed high tide ended up going about half an hour after. didnt seem to matter much. got 140 litres. happy tank. gonna collect from taka saturday 10th if weather is good. high tide at 3:30pm so will probably collect around 3pm
  10. i rate tanks on three things: - aquascaping (i like simple or unique but still maintaining a natural look) - coral variety and placement (a good mix of different size and shape of lps, sps placed in a way that is aesthetically pleasing) - coral colour (a good mix of all colours. goes without saying, no one likes a dull brown look ) sometimes take livestock into account - depending on whether it gives the tank some flare. generally it doesnt need a second look to tell if a tank looks appealing or not!
  11. probably a 12" DSB in the sump...
  12. argh the more i go to www.ratemybigpileofrock.com the more it annoys me!!! how can anyone possibly have a rating of 4.61/10 for this.... it would seriously take me 10 minutes to do that. thats about as natural as helen clarke naked
  13. nice reef, big call rating your own tank #1 8) not hard to become #1 based on your competition. still, i give it 9/10. i say we get some more top nzl reefers to put their tanks up and kick the yanks out of their own game different shaped tank than wasp's feelers!
  14. i think that is a generalisation nowadays. i have seen some bloody good colouration in sps tanks on 150's (cookie's, jetski's etc). after making the transition from 250's to 150's myself I've seen a faster rate of improvement in the colouration of my sps than with 250's. obviously the 250's are more powerful - the improvement is due to better reflectors and halides being much closer to the water surface. a good quality/design of reflector, a good spread of light and a good mix of kelvin in the bulbs can make a huge difference imo.

    QT

as soon as the new skimmer arrives, the refugium will be "tapped" so it can be bypassed from the display and sump thus doubling as a QT tank best of both worlds, a hopefully happier fish because of the live food plus quality water from the main system

    sweet

    very impressive
  17. im very content with 150's to be honest. just put your lights lower down.

    New Reflectors

before and after pic's! same bulbs I assume? the compaq evo shows better scale cant beat good reflective and fully covered lighting! they look sharp! cant wait to see them in.
  20. what did you think i meant? that the k was a typo?!!! yeah, you can do cheaper if you read read read and understand the theory behind the water chemistry etc and what you need to do outside good filtration to keep your water stable (good base of live rock, more than regular water changes etc) a decent protein skimmer and halide lighting are pretty important and are probably the two biggest expenses for the tank. you can get away with less but means higher maintenance typically.
