here you go alois http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fus ... 6/cid/2954 RnB - what do you mean keep things real simple for this reason. Even simple things fail and as you say, human's still err - you're contradicting yourself.

that was my theory to my boss too when he asked if trout would be ok. i didnt think they would last long as they'd want to head upstream to spawn!

  8. I read this by Albert Thiel on a web site... Anyone tried it?
  9. i have read clams are very good at reducing nitrate levels. they can even be put into tanks where nitrates are at 50ppm. anyone else heard of this?
  10. i bought a hydrometer about 6 months ago, well worth it's weight in gold. the floating type was out in comparison everytime.
  11. it will continue to happen so long as there are high nutrients in your tank. i was going to say fix the source of the problem - but perhaps your tank still has a few more months to "settle down?" is your skimmer an adequate size for your tank? how much LR? are you using RODI top up? essentially you need to reduce the number of silicates in your tank - more frequent water changes, lower feeding rates (assuming its an overfeeding problem) im not too sure on the specific's of your tank? be aware that dying diatoms also add silicates to your tank so keep up good maintenance. also test your kH, if its low, increase it (8-12) to promote coralline algae growth (thus reduce diatom growth) of course, all easier said than done!
  12. well there's that too,... its not what you know its who you know!
  13. it completely depends on the size of the tank and design of the stand. i would not be put off timber at all - very strong if constructed correctly. personally (and as a rough estimate) i think up to 6 foot, timber is fine. over 6 foot perhaps start looking at steel framing. my 5 footer is timber framing with 3 x sheets of 12mm ply (36mm total) for the top then 20mm poly on that. it is so strong that when we've been rennovating (and im talking sledge hammers to knock down walls, nail guns to put up new framing etc) the water doesnt even slightly ripple (i've tested it with all pumps off!) and the fish dont even flinch!!! i think you could *easily* go over 6 foot with timber if it were constructed properly. just look at the weight of roof structures some houses are holding up!

my boss owns a farm with a few dam's on it. one of them he chucked a couple hundred gold fish in (it's about 2.2 million litres he estimates) two weeks later there are none (or very few) gold fish left. he's now assuming eel's in there ate them. is this a correct assumption?!!! what sort of freshwater fish would be suitable for it? can you keep freshwater lobster and thing like that in a dam? apparently its very clean and clear water.

depends if you are purposely breeding unwanted critters then releasing them into the ocean,... or just having a self-contained slice of reef paradise sitting in your lounge to enjoy that just happen to have a few unwanted critters. do you really think MAF can stop every little unwanted creature coming into nzl? i dont think so. IMO, post the pic for everyone else to enjoy. if MAF come knocking on my door, then they can take all my little green genetically modified copepods that are going to grow legs and destroy nzl's native life  how do you think the moa became extinct
  21. yeah, i meant the 4-way unit. what about approximate pricing? any rough estimates?
  22. JoeBlog - any info back from Paul on OM's squirts yet? Any pricing etc?
  23. As Layton says, the salinity of sea water varies from one location to another. For instance, neither the Red Sea nor the Mediterranean is tidal and both have a high evaporation rate, therefore they are more saline than the open ocean. The Western Atlantic Ocean around the Caribbean also has a high salinity. The Dead Sea, of course, has the highest salinity of any sea in the world and no fishes can live there at all
