  1. did I say I was a senior??? I must also add at this point I dropped out after 6th form
  2. ime don't try to push your luck with tank glass, one thing not factored in by the equations is that glass settles over time and in 5-10 years the top edges get thinner and more brittle. so you may save a few $$$ now, but it won't last anywhere near as long.
  3. we manufacture plastic ponds on site, have a big range, check out Gardenpools.co.nz (new website up soon i think) as well as stocking a heap of stuf from stone and water world you really need 75L per fish minimum and around 30-40cm deep so around 300L would be ok for 2-3 fish max but take into account the pump size and planting container size you're pushing the comfort levels. a waterlily won't grow well with the amount of water movement in there, plus even the minatures will cover an area twice that size when growing well (plus the basket will take up valuable fish room) try something like Irises, Blue Hygro, or Japanese rush. with a few marginals going over the sides. good pond for a swarm of golden mountain minnows though, would look awesome and they would love to play in the current. plus Moors are not the best choice for outdoor ponds as they get picked off by predators easily (no upwards vision) and Shubunkins are not slow growing as they are just a multi coloured version of a comet, i.e. very fast and genetically very strong.
  4. Christchurch to Naseby isn't across islands. is it???
  5. if the guy in the previous thread successfully breeds them he could mail you a gift? (dunno if that is technically legal though.)

    Tanked

anyone else think that skateboarding on top of fish is kinda cruel???
  7. good way to relax after your first exam day. always fun. spent my first day celebrating, had 3 shots of JD before second day, got 89% in biology and 79% in physics (anyone else find Physics is easier to understand while drunk) not that I condone that sort of thing...
  8. I'll try and get some photo's of what we can get for reasonable prices atm, very nice but not really good breeding quality.
  9. yeps giving away is ok as long as it isn't in quantities enough to get their notice. also technically no reason why your friends can't give you a gift at a later date I normally trade mine for feathers and pheasants, yummy....
  10. could always talk to your local DOC officers and look into keeping natives.
  11. lol, almost bought that to sell to my bosses That was the full 3 piece setup wasn't it?? yeah that is a little over rated for that setup., you can add a tap into the system for the short term, doesn't worry the pump if its slightly held back. if your last pond had UV was the bulb fresh???? the difference between a 6 month old bulb and a new setup is quite amazing really, and if barley straw cleared it then the UV should have done it heaps easier. justa quick point you know the paradise set is not really suitable for fish unless you replace the bottom pond.
  12. I only test If i see something strange, or just to be sure during cycling. then again, i'm dropping 50 odd fish into a 100L tank on a regular basis. I always use TLC live bacteria just in case for large stockings and never had an ammonia spike. (Worst case was 3 weeks ago with 75 feeder fish into a 130L tank, got a nitrite reading of 0.5ppm at the worst.
  13. if you want something Ultra special you'd be hard pressed to find better than the breeders on here, most of the commercial stuff is mass produced to a point. althoug a few nice special come in now and then like the elephants and the Black orchids (there is a Tauranga breeder having a bit of success with the orchids atm.)
  14. tough legal to keep and collect. if you find any in your local area make sure to let us know.
  15. still a few things to play with, lotsa bluetounges around, and beardies, and Leo's, terrapins, tortoises etc.... welcome and enjoy
  16. might do a check on the way home in a couple of spots, but I find slower moving (but still flowing) water, drains that flow into estuaries are good, try the creek down the bottom of girls college, areound Buretta golf course, down the bottom of the boardwalk, the drains around the Wairoa river, the creek in the valley in Ohauiti.
  17. I have acclimated many successfully to tropical temps, find they struggle much above 26 degrees though. also if you get the big one return them as they are the females and will help restock the population, smaller ones acclimate heaps quicker anyways. If I only spend 1/2 an hour acclimating them I find I lose around 1 in 10, if I spend over an hour I rarely lose any. also they seem to acclimate quicker in summer as the water they are coming from is generally quite warm. the Creek I collect from was at 26 degrees yesterday (most were in a shadier area though)
  18. I recomend getting the lot, chances are in the future you will be setting up another tank. also useful if you decide to add a lot of new fish at once
  19. oh, those were from those guys?? oh well...
  20. even neons shouldn't have died that quickly, test the pH from the LFS should be around 7.6 in most areas town supply. triple check your temp is correct (I have a thermometer that costantly reads about 6 degrees out) also im assuming you used water conditioner??? when you say "Slowly added water to the bag" what do you mean, that part should take a minimum of 20 mins (preferably a bit longer) The temp thing is mainly just for if you have transported the fish a long way and the temperature is qite different, but a 3-4 degree difference doesnt do bugger all to a fish. imo neons are actually quite hardy, they just get seriously mistreated on the way to the shop, got 50 the other day crammed into about 1.5L of water.
  21. ummm... they CANNOT import 2 @$50, its more like 100 @ $50 or 2 @$2000 each they have set fees and charges.
  22. how much are those??? they would do the job very well.
  23. 2 common methods, for the people that want to know they are there without getting wet, you can spotlight them at night (their eyes are really reflective) or the most fun is to jump in and pass the net through any water plants in the area (I find watercress is their fav place.)
  24. its the max head height that is important, work out the highest point that the water has to pump to (useful diagram and there should be a graph on the pump box similar to this btw for a medium sized water fall 3600Lph is actually not that much, especially with the flow rate decreased by the H/Max sorry was getting confused with the model names, go a couple of those at work too the filtral 5000 has a hmax of 2.3m, meaning you would probably only want to pump to 1.2-.15m high to get a decent flow rate.
  25. for the Water fall what is the pump and what is the max height of the waterfall feature?? pumps normally only need a new impeller. dding the canister inline does have a slight affect on the flow rates, but as long as you run larger piping i.e. 32mm it shouldn't be too noticeable. For the filter, I have exactly that problem with one I have, I have just removed the bulb and plugged it full of silicone to prevent it leaking. the UV system is a bit shoddy in these anyways. If you do replace the sleeve make sure the electrics aint corroded, as it will make it pointless, and its cheaper anyways to buy an inline UV clarifier. plus the inline ones are a lot more effective as they tend to have higher contact time. PM me if you need any parts etc as I think I have a couple of oldies floating around work.
