Yes, but multiples of the same type of fish in the same tank ,with only one showing signs of illness, leads towards something more specific. Being that rams are considered less than hardy at best, I would assume if water quality was to blame, the other ram(s) in the tank would be showing similar signs.

The fumes were from a petrol generator And yes, those who make P are usually very lacking in the head department. It is a very dangerous drug and is ridiculously hard to get off and stay off. A few childhood friends of mine lost everything to P , and it's consequences. Let's not throw around assumptions , I'm pretty sure people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning whilst not stoned, too.

I've got a kuhli loach in my heavily planted tank. I thought he was deceased, as I hadn't seen him in 3 months. Then when I was re-arranging a few weeks ago he popped his head out through some rocks. Moral of the story is, great fish, but if you have anything in your tank you will never see it

Perhaps Harlequin Rasbora (great schooling / shoaling fish) Cardinal Tetra (bit more expensive than neons, but lots more colour) Rummy nosed Tetra Those are all good for mid to high water level (i.e they don't really spend much time near the bottom) Then you could add life to the bottom by adding Corydoras (min school size of 5-6) That's where I'd head

Only thing I can think of is that your setup may be saturating the surrounding water with c02 and not spreading it throughout the tank here's a good version of a DIY Reactor for c02 if that is the case ? or if you're interested in trying another diffusion method. I'd say get together a list of all the plants you are interested in growing and see what requirements each has - No need to invest in a c02 system if the plants you like will grow like weeds in a low tech tank I'm growing these as we speak in low tech tanks ( no c02 or fertiliser but with a daltons substrate sealed by silica sand and small black gravel mixed up ) Rotala Wallichii Cabomba Caroliniana Amazon swords Java fern (needle leaf , broad leaf and windelov ) Java moss Christmass moss Cyperus Helferi Assorted Crypts Aponogeton Rigidifolius I'd advise against starting out with plants you can get at animates, as every one I've bought from there has melted beyond recovery within a few weeks of planting. This may just be personal experience & bad luck - but I've never had issues with plants from people on here, nor from trademe or hollywood fish farm. Depending on where you are located, I'd say chances are high someone can help you out with some cuttings to get you started .

I think this is a generational thing too - My parents age group (60-70) thinks it is highly addictive and dangerous . Whereas I don't know anyone around my age (30....ish) who hold the same beliefs.

I think decriminalisation would be a much better route than making it legal. Some kind of fine for possession in a public place. No criminal record - no trip to the station. Figure out a way to test for "recent" intake - the test they use now just finds any trace amount, which could be in your system from days ago. The thing is, when you're 18 years old and having fun you don't think about the consequences of getting caught with it, until you've been caught. Then it's too late and you're marked for life as a criminal !

+1 on more water changes What brand of water treatment are you using ? Check the use by dates on all the stuff you're putting in - Smell the open bottles , not too much ! - anything smell really bad ? Did you shake the excel bottle before dosing ? Are you using/Have you used a product like "clarity" or anything similar that removes algae ? I had real problems when using that, caused my fish to do similar things as you are describing. silly question probably - but are there any dead fish hidden somewhere?
