  1. I've seen them for sale a while back now in animates. How they got them I do not know, they're obviously here somewhere. And before anyone gives me the "are you sure?", Yes definitely sure, they do look really cool too.
  2. Just interested to see if anyone has seen them before for sale in NZ, or knows anyone with one? I know we can get the thorny devils, beardies, water dragons. But never seen a frilled. Or know anyone with monitors? I haven't seen any in a few years.
  3. Stoked, my youngest dragon has finally started eating all her greens after much trial and error with them. Turns out she hates butternut squash, who knew lol. Mean while the other dragons just eat anything you put in front of them. Picky little bugger she is.
  4. I've only ever kept one axolotl and he/she lived in a tank with a loose carbon filter and a couple of feeder fish for a good few years. Prior to me owning it, it spent around 10years living in a small plastic tank with no filter and just being cleaned once in a blue moon. They seem like very hardy creatures.
  5. Swapped the side the lamps where on today. Heats perfectly now... you think they would put a note in the "manual" for the viv which side is more appropriate to place heating on. Doesn't matter if it's coastal or inland, my question was out of interest in general In saying that coastals are super easy to heat as they don't need anywhere near as warm temps.
  6. I have a 4ftx2ftx2ft viv and will have to go buy the new bulbs tonight, a 75w doesn't even get close.
  7. Out of interest how large are your viv/what wattage bulbs do you use to heat them? I just got a new enclosure over the weekend and realised my bulbs are gonna need to be a lot higher wattage for this viv than they used to be, especially with this cold atm. I'm interested as to what everyone else uses
  8. I have to agree with varanophile on this. No of course you wouldn't feed an adult locust to a new hatching it'd be common sense (not to say they wouldn't try and eat them in the wild and spit them back up), but I see no problem feeding a medium to large nymph locusts to a younger beardy say 9-10inchs, they're bigger than the gap between their eyes but they have no problem crunching them down. I have also noticed a change with using small locust compared to larger ones as feeders, being feed mainly the small locusts poops became very hard, dry and less healthy looking compared to those feed the larger size. I presume this is because there is more moisture and more meat to chitin within the larger locusts being eaten.
  9. Not sure there is a gismo aspect at all? I have a few hobbies, those of which also include electronics (building circuits etc). Was interested in the arcadias cos you can get 12% UVB ones supposed to be great for your dragon and good for colouration.
  10. Not sure they very well do lol. My thermostats have their own power feeds with displays, so probably end up using a lot more power than the normal one that is used here in NZ. Although its an awesome controller. I should start buying and selling them built up ;P. Out of interest does anyone on here know where you can get Arcadia uv tubes in NZ or shipped to NZ? They're supposed to be fantastic.
  11. Yeap once the lights go on in the morning it gets up to appropriate temps (cool ambient, hot ambient and basking spot surface) and never goes higher. I tested this for weeks to be sure. Any hotter (higher wattage) bulbs make everything out of wack and even with a thermostat the basking spot then gets too hotter surface temp. My point is that it is possible not to have to use one.
  12. Yea it would all comes down to the size of the enclosure, where it is, what it's made out of etc. For instance, I have a juv beardy here his viv he has a basking lamp, a ceramic heat lamp and his UV tube. Once warmed up in the morning, it stays at constant appropriate temps without the need for a thermostat, if plugged in it doesn't do anything (but waste power) as the temps are within a degree of the setting always. The only time it varies from that is when we have both computers in that room on and playing pc games, the temp increases by a couple of degrees ambient. Everything within the viv has been measured with multiple thermometers and infrared heat guns. But for ease of mind it's good to have one plugged in anyway . The enclosures in my lounge on the other hand needs them as it get's a little too hot with the different bulbs etc in it. Yea I bought the thermostats I have off ebay, got a really nice digital unit, does heating and cooling as well as displays current temps cost me something like 30-40 delivered. Did all the wiring for it myself, really nice to use. But you can get cheap ones that are something like $13 delivered plug and play. Dunno how amazing they are though. Yea I've seen those ones overseas, the trouble is finding a place that with ship to NZ
  13. Yea with my boys I have a thermostat on at night now (didn't used to went on for winter), it's still set to drop quite low. Just not REALLY low often doesn't even turn on. Last time I mentioned to someone that they could have temps without the use of one, "repto" bit my head off and a had a rage about how I don't have a clue of the basic equipment needed to keep reptiles. So going by him/her you don't either  lol. Do you have an album somewhere of your dragons I'd love to see them? Don't really see many reds in NZ.
  14. Might have me mixed up with someone else on this? Also your right on that that size though is far too small for an adult
  15. What enclosure this comment confused me a tad?
  16. I dislike how rude you constantly are on here repto, your remarks aren't required and they seem to pop up a lot. You're right I haven't had 12years of experience with bearded dragons as others have, doesn't mean I don't have any though. Personally I like to come on and chat and share things and not have people jump down your throat.
  17. What kind of temps you talking, no one said anything about full heating the whole time . But thats the point of a forum to gain and share more info, NZers are the only people that don't stress so much about their beardies. I'd presume the hot sands/rocks and clay would remain hot into the night in aus, much like the ground here remains warm after the sun does down.
  18. Yes. But it doesn't mean they have to be that cold and are able to deal with temps like that every single night. As well as that they're not all from the desert many live in shruby areas. On top of that they have a better survival rate living in captivity with better controlled temps. The ones in the wild generally don't live anywhere near as long.
  19. My thermostat doesn't do anything for me, my temps always stay as they should ( I measure them with thermometer probes and an infrared gun). So without it I wouldn't have a problem. But because of the varying temps at night it's good to have one to make sure your pet doesn't get too cold/hot while it's sleeping. So no you don't need if you know you can keep good temps still without one, but it's good to have anyway for those just in case occasions when you can't.
  20. Yea I agree there, about 200-300 hundred from a breeder, 350-450 from a pet store. Animates would probably cost even more.
  21. Yea been a really bad season for them. On that note there are still babies at 2 pet stores here in Christchurch. Pet and garden (they all have really nice colouring) Proud paws (not 100% sure they still have them, there was still 2 a week ago)
  22. I'm confused now. After just having a chat with my partner he mentioned his work mate had tried to get a turtle shipped to NZ and customs etc at the airport priced it up at around 5k at the time and you had to have a special enclosure etc. But decided it was too expensive. I thought it was impossible to import any reptile unless your a zoo?
  23. Yea I offer my wee man an eye dropper of water on days it's not bath time. He apparently drunk from a bowl when I got him but atm the only time I've seen him go near it is when an insect fell in lol.
  24. I wouldn't worry too much Raetea, 4ftx2ftx2ft is the normal standard size people generally keep their beardies in. And is fine for a single beardy. Just make sure he/she gets time out of the viv.
  25. Just as another feeder insect so I'm not just relying mainly on locusts, and they shouldn't require much if any heating to breed either with them being able to breed outside and all. Awell going by you they are all good to use then because you've done it. Thanks
