  1. Hmmmmm, definitely time to clean the filter, maybe a little to late.
  2. We are on tank water, so the only option I have is the 6.5 water out of our tank, It usually sits slightly higher in summer though. Hopefully it does not drop fast enough to kill any of my fish, but next time I am at the lfs I shall get something to test the hardness and see what it is.
  3. I want it to sit some where between 6.5 and 7, its not that it is dropping to low at the moment, but I am afraid that if I am away for a while and am not around to re adjust it up it will drop to low and kill some of my fish. I have hoplo cats, black ghost knife, and congo tetras in it.
  4. I had gravel before, my tank now has sand in it. I could try a bit of bird grit and see if that helps, we have a bit of that in the house, does bird grit have a non neutral pH? And by bird grit do you mean crushed oyster shell?
  5. About a month ago I upgraded my 200L tank to a 300L tank. Ever since then I have had problems with my pH dropping. The pH of the water from my water tank is about 6.5 (a bit lower then I want, but manageable), when I do a water change I bring the water to between 6.5 and 7 which is where I want it, but within a couple of days the pH is dropping to just above 6 (followed by me doing a water change and bringing the pH back up). Does any one have any ideas on what could be causing my pH to drop? When I upgraded my tank I changed the the gravel for silicon sand, added some pvc pipe and a new heater. Those are the only things I can think that I changed in my tank.
  6. I would imagine mainly your nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia, but you go to your lfs to make sure that your tests are measuring accurately, i.e. the chemicals haunt 'gone off'.
  7. Haha, I have to admit they are cool, I still prefer my real fish though.
  8. Dwarf gourami can be quite colorful, and they should be able to fit in there.
  9. If that is supposed to be tank, go 350, as on the whole I find big tanks more fun, easier, and look more impressive.

    Hello....

Welcome, and dont be afraid of asking questions, people here are always happy to give you advice. Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question.
  11. In my opinion you cant have to much filtration on a tank, in fact i prefer to over filter my tanks. The only problem you you might have is to much flow. This is easy to solve as mentioned earlier by reducing the flow out of the filter. Personally I say if you cant afford it, get it. On my 300L tank I have a filter rated for 400L and one ratted for 200L both running on it.
  12. Happy Birthday to You Happy Birthday to You Happy Birthday Dear Donna Happy Birthday to You.
  13. Welcome, sounds like you have some exciting ponds.
  14. @Ira I wasnt going to go that powerful, I have been basing all my planing at the moment on about the size blue said. @blueether I am keen to see your tank for ideas, but the video hasnt loaded
  15. Nice tank, makes me want to go get a water dragon.
  16. I would like all the water moving fast, not just jets, which is why I shall plumb them out of spray bars instead of just using jets. I think I understand what you mean, but if you could show I quick diagram it would be very helpful thank you. Are you talking about using somthing like this: http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/detail/view/tunze-nanostream-6045/m/966/ to move that water around? That sounds interesting, what are you studying, and what will be happening to the tank after you finish?
  17. No, I will have some sort of filtration, and being fast flow it limits the amount of plant filtration I can do, so it will be a bio filter some where there.
  18. I will be using a external filter like that but mainly using it for filtration then water movement. In terms of the cost of setting up a tank (very important to me as I am a poor student) It is alot cheaper to buy a couple of pond pumps then a external canister filter that moves the same amount of water.
  19. I was intending on creating a spray bar, for that reason, and will probably have the pumps at the end that draws the water, I just forgot to say that, since the tank is long maybe I will go with stronger water flow and do more the one spray bar at a different hight so the water in the tank moves better. I would like some of the NZ native fish that like fast water, I just dont think I will get them as my skill of catching wild fish is non existent, and wouldnt know what and where to catch. Thats a shame, how many did you have in your tank?
  20. I have a empty 150L tank (1.2*0.3*0.4) that I want to set up as a high flow hill stream loach tank, something like this: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=59465 I am thinking use a set up somthing like this: I was also thinking that I would have a canister filter pumping water out of one end and in at the other to provide filtration. I was wondering what sort of turn over rates do I would I need for the pumps, and filter, how many loaches do you think should be stocked in the tank, and are there any other small fishes that I could stock with them? Thanks for advice in advance.
  21. haha, glad I am not the only one that thought to call it a catfish.
