  1. Andrew said, Geez AJ, I didn't know you kept Angels. We DO learn something new every day
  2. Hi Goldie, See you are looking for a Gold in the Trade Section. My Gold ones are around eight inch, I have two, but as of yet have not bred.... perhaps two of the same sex. Of the five juvies I got, there turned out to be two pairs that have spawned already, so perhaps the odd one out might take up with one of the larger adults. I'm gonna give it another week or so, then if nothing happens I too might be on the lookout for an adult gold he he. Although it's pretty common for angels to spawn, (and for me it's happened lots of times over the past years), I'm logging the day to day progress and mght put together an article for beginners that are having probs, which there seems to be many of from my readings on various sites. I feel that no matter how mundane or easy to breed a fish might be, we should all share our knowledge with others. Lotsa luck in finding a suitable fish. Regards, BIll (Pegasus)

Bill said, I of course meant the lower finnage, not the gonopodium, which seems to be a prob in specialized breeding. In the early days of development of the King Cobra, Snakeskins, and Delta Guppies this was a major prob but the breeders obviously found ways around it.

    Hello

Hi Cat, Another forum here that might give you some answers. http://www.simplydiscus.com/

    Hello

Hi Cat, You say in your PM that you turned the internal filter off. Under the circumstances (or any for that matter) it's not a good idea to turn an established filter off for prolonged periods. You could finish up with cloudy water due to bacteria buildup/dying. A good water change wouldn't go amiss if your filter has been off awhile. Hope he/she survives. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)

WOW AJ, Good example. Thanks muchly. Never knew they got THAT long. Will inform the poster and give credit to you for the search

Question regarding Molly Type -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can any one tell me what type of Molly it is that has an enlongated tassle type arangement on the end of a cord looking thing dangling from between its pectrals that measures aprox one and a half inches long. Its a silver male of which apparantly only comes in one other colour, black. It is a high fin with a lyre tail. Is it a deformity? I have a photo of him but dont know how to post it. Thanks, Melinda. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The above is a post from another board, but got my attention, and to be honest I don't know what it could be. Any ideas ?

    Hello

Hi Cat, You have mail. There's a site here in Holland that has so much info on Discus that it may hold some immediate answers to your problems. http://www.dph.nl/ Hope it helps, Bill (Pegasus)
  10. Hey there Goldie My 9 year old grandson comendered three of my tanks for his guppies, so they now occupy the bath along with the Angels. Seems to be more angels than I first thought, but a couple of weeks should show a dramatic increase in size and most of the guppies will be moved out as they are sold already. Suppose I'm lucky really as the whole family are involved (even moreso now they can see some results) With the double skin cover and surrounding insulation the bath holds the heat really good, so another three or four will join it very shortly. I now have three free tanks, one of which I want to devote to the Corys which I hope to breed. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  11. You say, You WERE confused. I don't "proclaim" to be anything AJ, There was very little point in stating the obvious eg, Gender... genus genera ... pl genus, as you obviously knew this. Seems to be the week for sarcastic remarks, but no harm done. My original question was "Why" Possibly because they can't get it right the first time. It seems even the experts make mistakes as we see below. Seems they STILL can't get it right. I have enough replies to my question. My thanks to all. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  12. Hi Dennis, The bath has a top made of double skin Agrathane, so I'm hoping it wil work out economically. I also packed inside the surround of the bath with styrene sheets which will conserve the heat. Seems like this might become my fishroom
  13. Some months ago I bought Two adult Angels and eight juveniles of which one adult and three juvies died in transit. I replaced the adult and the juvies have now grown and produced a pair that have spawned several times. Looking in the tank tonight I see that another couple have paired off and laid a clutch of eggs. My original spawning pair have laid a batch on the end glass and the new pair on the filter upright, so there are two spawnings in the tank. Just a rough guess but there would be possibly 400plus eggs that have little hope of surviving because... I HAVE NO DAMN ROOM LEFT :) I have fry EVERYWHERE, in tanks, in containers, and tomorrow they will be in a bath in the empty bach we have. My latest spawning of Angels are all growing rapidly. so these will be the first to try the bath out. I've been watching it (the bath) for a day or so checking the temp and such as the biggest heater I could get was a 300watt, but it seems to do the job. Looks like a few of the old baths (water troughs) around the farm will be getting a second lease on life Happy Days, Bill (Pegasus)

Hi Elembee, Just to clarify the above and avoid confusing you further, Ira tends to keep fish that live in conditions of high pH eg, above 7.5pH, but for the general run of fish such as the tetras, guppies, gouramies, angels, swords and such, it would be best to avoid the shells. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)

If I remember correctly (might be wrong) but that page was set up some time ago as a sort of test. As in many cases, major misunderstandings can come from a single line of printed text depending on the nationality of the person, or their ability to see the funny side of something the writer thought obvious. Possibly the reason the Smiley was designed
  16. All humour aside, I regret my obvious spelling mistakes... point taken. "GENDER"... A classification roughly corresponding to the two sexes and sexlessness. Mmmm... does this mean we have different names for the males and females... all humour aside of course?
  17. Thanks all, The main question was refering to the species name, not the family. The Latin side of things is no prob, as I was brought up to learn Latin from the age of five, but we get name changes such as the following. Lesbites reticulatus... now Poecilia Ciclasoma meeki... now Thorichthys meeki Barbus tetrazona.... now Puntius tetrazona and so forth, which is still a bit of a mix up. As regards the learning of the new names, this is no prob if they would at least change it and stick to it, but many names have been changed several times over the years. Fortunately with todays technology we can quickly source any name changes that have taken place on the net, and fortunately entering the old name in your search still brings up the correct fish with all it's relevant details.

A warm welcome to the forum LMB, great to have you join us. What sort of fish do you have? If you let us know perhaps we can suggest a setup that might suit your situation. The warnings above are valid, and even some ornaments that are added to tanks can break down and cause endless probs, mainly cloudy water. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  19. Not really a DIY project, so I'll post here. Fry Food Of The Perfect Size When moving fry onto flake food it is sometimes hard to crush it to the right size for their small mouths, even between the fingers. Some suggest using a coffee grinder, which I suppose is ok if you happen to have a spare clean one. I have found the following quite handy. Start with an empty plasic fish food container of the type with a snap on lid. Cut the top off the lid, but leave the snap ring intact. You now have a lid with a large hole in it. Put a small amount of food into the container and crumble it as small as you can. Now place a piece of very fine nylon mesh over the top of the container and snap the lid with the hole back on. By shaking the container over the tank only the very smallest of food will be released, almost dust like. As the fry grow, increase the size of the piece of mesh as required. No waste, no uneaten food to foul the tank, and a perfect size every time. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)

    Aloha!!! NZ

Hi Cram, glad you joined us. I had ten Oscars over 14" long in a 9X2X2 tank that I used to show in my early days. They were a tad on the small side compared to some that used to do the rounds. They are after all a food fish in some countries and certainly get a lot bigger than our tank kept ones What size are your tanks, and how old are the Oscars ? Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  21. Interesting link AJ, thanks for the info
  22. Hey, way to go Dennis... Good tip. How about getting the guy to join the forum, we could do with some info on Sea Horses. It's one of my long time hopes that I'll breed them one day, but other things are getting in the way at the moment. How's those fish of your's doing ?
  23. Hi Karen, U/G filters are designed to draw water through the substrate which in time will become covered in good bacteria that will consume much of the wastes produced in your tank. Turning your U/G filter off will possibly kill all this good bacteria leading to an explosion of dead bacteria that will certainly give you problems. Once working and established they should be left running continuously and only switched off for short periods if really needed, for servicing and such. This applies to all types of filters, and is the reason you don't clean your filter too scrupulously as if you make it "too clean" you will kill off all the good bacteria, and in effect be back to square one with your bio cycle. As far as them being a "No No" for Discus, I think you would have to convince a lot of Discus keepers that have been using them for decades The "well informed" person at the shop obviously didn't explain the reason for this statement. Many Aquarists are against U/G filters as they say it effects plant growth, but all my tanks are bursting with plants, and all have U/G filters... I wouldn't set a tank up without one, and have yet to strip a tank because of U/G/F failure. JMHO. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  24. They ain't called "Killies" for nothing So how about a bit of history Andrew... How did they get the name "Killies" ? They always remind me of a Freshwater Jack Pike and in the cases that I have been involved in they ate just like one with lightening speed and a quick gulp
  25. Really interesting that Caryl, Obviously there was enough life in the sea water to support them. I am at the moment about to try a batch on the same principal, (on a much larger scale but didn't give a thought to the sand.... Perhaps I should add some We trialed sea water out in England with good results, but as our "local" beach was eighty miles away replacement water was a prob. The beach here is only minutes away by car, and at the rate I am going through Brine Shrimp at the moment it is becoming quite costly. Due to the storm last night the sea will be pretty stirred up I would think, so I will collect some water and sand in a few days and start my tests which I intend to monitor in great detail. When you look at this hobby of ours it has many doors that can be opened, from just keeping a few fish to botany, biology, chemistry, science with formula's and equations, trials and experiments, DIY, even food concoctions that some of us tend to create, not to mention the host of other things we tend to dabble in to keep our fish alive One thing is certain, there's always another challenge if you open another door. Thanks for the inspiration Happy Days, Bill (Pegasus)
