  1. Hi Richard, I get bloodworms in mine as well.... Don't know how they get there, but the fish love em Green stuff won't do any harm, but you could rinse it if you are worried. Seeding the other pail might help. Seems like someone got a good Christmas prezzie he he.
  2. One of the many benefits of living north of the smoke
  3. Hi Andi, A couple of scoops of gravel from an established tank, plus a well used box or sponge filter and some activated carbon will clear your tank cloudiness in a very short time. As regards the rainwater.... IMO, this is not the cause of your cloudy water. Many of us on the forum use it extensivly.... myself being one of them, and personally I find it more trustworthy than town supply, which I refuse to drink. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  4. Hi @ndrew, As a Moderator, I too would have removed your post had it been in the sections I moderate. The fact that you were complaining about the conditions that an animal was kept in was not the issue. The issue was that you decided to use this forum to degrade a companies reputation by publishing it's name, which as stated above, is not the purpose of this forum. This is not the United States, and we all like to think this forum is for the exchange of knowledge among fishkeepers, not for personal flag waving. I support Bruce in his actions, as legal actions could be taken against the forum if the company felt the post was of such a nature that it was harmful to their business.

Mmmm... you had me wondering there for a while... he he. Instead of trying to make the little bit that the pipe goes on, just push your airline directly down the pipe once it is in place so it almost reaches the bottom.... works just as good

Hi again Cat, Only reason the big Brine Shrimp Hatcher that I designed has a dark side is so that it can be partitioned off from the smaller area where the live shrimp will finish up. If the "peephole" is opened on the DARK side of the hatcher, and a light placed over the small end, the live shrimp will swim through the "peephole" and into the smaller end of the hatcher, and be free of shells, which are all left in the dark side of the hatcher. So in answer to your question, No.... they don't need the dark to hatch, and darkness will not improve the hatch. Hatching at a low temp will take longer than at a higher temp. This is the way I do it, and never add fresh water when using a small hatcher. The foot for the UG filter you are after is a simple rectangle of plasic 20mm X 30mm with a hole in the middle which is 10mm diameter. Sounds a piece of cake compared to the fry saver Regards, Bill (Pegasus)

Hi Cat, Sounds like you're gonna be busy this weekend If the parents are caring for the young, I would leave them at this stage till you get a rearing tank ready for them... JMO though I would also try to restrict your micro worm feeding to one end of the tank and just lightly vacuum it every other day to clean any excess food up. Depending on your setup, you could also just gently slide the gravel to one side at the end you feed so that you have the bare bottom of the tank showing, but if you have a UG filter fitted you won't be able to do this. If you do it over a day or so it shouldn't upset things too much. If you need some extra help with the fry savers, drop me an email Happy Days for you Bill (Pegasus)

Hi Dianna, Thanks for the interest. The upper pipe in the pic is the one that draws water from the tank and into the pail. It works on the principle of a simple airlift by having the airline going into the bottom of the long portion of the pipe that extends into the tank. This forces water up the tube and into the bucket. A cheap air pump would do this job. I suppose the same principle could be used for a filter if you blocked the bottom bit of the pail off with a perforated disk so that the outlet pipe only drew the clean filtered water back into the tank. The airlift pipe entering the pail could be then extended and several holes drilled in it to give a better flow over the filtering medium. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  9. Mmmmmm    Never thought of that.... could of been a young croc he he.

Just stripped it out on Saturday Dennis. Had so much plant I couln't see my fish. Planted two more two foots with the overgrown bits.
  11. The splash you mentioned earlier could have been an eel. They tend to move around a bit from pond/dam to pond/dam, and can go some fair distances overland if the grass is moist. At a previous farm we had, there was a couple of eels around four foot long that would feed from your hand. Never had a bored visitor once you showed them the eels Your turn on the NTF btw dianna

Managed to take a few pics of my Saver and my daughters Breeding trap. http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/grumpy ... SAVERS.htm
  14. Around 18mls east of Tutakawa (sp.. not sure) Dived it dozens of times, and the Sugar Loaf... down to 150foot. Never seen any lion fish there though, but it has to be the best dive in NZ... but then there's the ..... he he. My love was wreck diving and deep dark caves
  15. Interfecus aid, It certainly does cost you... these things don't run for nothing
  16. Hi Interfecus, You say: There are many people on this forum with a single tank full of Discus and exotics that are worth a lot more than $15 bucks each, but they don't use sterilizers. Possibly one of the major fish wholesalers could put you onto someone who could supply one. Just a word of thought before you do. I have worked in quarantine rooms that the whole water system is constantly sterilized. The tanks were bare, and in some cases numbered several hundred. Invariably when the fish entered the normal tanks they became sick, so careful adjustments to water conditions had to take place gradually over time. Seemed to me that the fish had lost all thier natural immunity to disease.
  17. Great stuff Macka, nice fish to breed, and the babies will look sooooo cute he he.
  18. I agree with Ira...... (is this a first he he) UV sterilization would not be needed really as the water change system seemed 10000% better than the jars.
  19. Hi Goldie, Got your PM.... Thanks. Don't know why, but I thought for some reason you were in the North Island..... Interested yes, but I don't think the fish would survive the trip. I recently enquired about having some Discus sent up from your area and couldn't find anyone to ship them. Hopefully I am getting some flown up possibly next month. May have to just wait a few weeks and see what my one drops, or possibly one from another batch we have. Thanks so much for the offer, it would have been nice. Guppy keepers.... Cees would be the best one to give you a few names. Peter McLeod is also doing some line breeding I believe. There was talk of starting an NZ Guppy Society, but I haven't heard the latest. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  20. WOW Ira.... You are so lucky... all that live food he he. Might be time to check the dams around the area.
  21. My tubs outside are a deep green colour. Bill... with tons of mossies at the moment Well Richard, you've tried everything else.... don't know what to suggest. From around 9am my tubs get full sunshine till around 6:30pm. I have another tub that gets sun from sunrise to around 8:30am. The latter one hardly gets any mossies in it. Must admit, when my green water gets a bit thick I tip about half out of the tubs and top up with fresh water, but normally a good downpour does this for me.

    Hi from Delta

HI Ira, and Delta, Be great if you could copy your posts into the Anabatoid Section as this is VERY useful info. Ira could start the thread if that was ok. No objections to it being here.... it's great, but is certainly worth a place in the other section. We need some Betta threads going Delta.... excuse the pun Often wondered the same thing myself
  23. Hey.... Good point Interfecus.... Never thought of that
  24. Hi Andrew, Congrats on your new position as Moderator Good advice to Interfecus by the way. If these are indeed as rare as you say, then every endevour should be made to preserve the species, and even though I myself have bred Killies in the past, I would not like to be placed in a position where I could be responsible for the extinction of a species. Do as Andrew says Interfecus.... Start with a species that is not in danger.... take all the advice you can from other KIllie keepers, and by this time perhaps the species in question will be more available. Keep up the good work Andrew.... We know you will Regards, Bill (Pegasus)
  25. You must live in a Bugless area Richard if you don't have some mossies by now. Even when they change and fly off they leave some behind. Take a scoop with a net and see if you have any wrigglers in it. The conditions are perfect by the sound of things. If all else fails, the green water will feed any fry you might have. How about trying some brine shrimp.... now thats sure to hatch
