Woohoo got my fantails for the pond

Yeah they have polycarbonate and also acrylic/plexiglass. Yeah I'm excited about it. I know it's going to look really good. -
Exactly. Or just watch them! lol

Squirt my hubby works for a plastics company that deal with all that. He can get it for me probably at a discounted rate as he works there, even if it was $180 I'd still get it The bath is only $35... so it's not too bad -
I know you're not Yes I agree.... also the best way to avoid drownings is to focus on educating parents and caregivers. Honestly, I know kids drown and I don't necessarily blame the parents... I mean some kids get out of houses even when the doors are locked. I know I used to climb out my bedroom window when I was little and go to the neighbours (in the middle of the night!). But at the same time, IF your child has done something like that, wouldn't you take all steps to stop it happening again, such as putting security stays on the windows? But in most cases, I believe it is easily prevented. You don't let your kids go walking the streets... like parents in our neighbourhood. I've seen a kid in nothing but a diaper at only 1 1/2 years old-ish ON the road and the mother yelling at him to come inside from the window! :an!gry Did she really expect her baby to do as it's told and just get off the road? And WHY was he ON the road in the first place?! It's just complete stupidity. And you don't just leave a bathtub with water in it, when you have young kids that could drown in it. It's all about educating. And IF a child drowns then it should be the parent/s taking the blame... not the person with the pond/swimming pool. But that's just my opinion...

Yep lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldfish#Size The largest known goldfish was 48cm long! craig - you could try talking your gf into getting an old bathtub and turning it into a pond. That's what I'm doing I wanted to get a claw foot one but they are very heavy and would probably need 3-4 people just to lift it. So I'm going with an acrylic one but I worked out the volume and apparently it's 622 litres. So definitely big enough!

What kind of goldfish are in there? 65L is small for goldfish. Most grow to 20-30cm long. I have the same tank as you and it's only 60cm long and about 30cm wide. I have 1 blue fantail goldfish in there temporarily, as I had to rescue it from my pond as a cat got my chocolate one so I decided to remove the blue one and put him/her in the tank until I have found a solution. But he/she is only about 7cm long at the moment. I got my tank on special from Animates for $79.99.

Yet if a child drowns at the reserve behind us, they aren't liable, even though it's council land :dunno:

Yeah I thought about that but it would kind of defeat the purpose because I wouldn't be able to see the fish so easily. I want a clear view. With the plastic I can take it off easily and I can see through it easily. -
If you ask me, just another money making scheme from the council... of course they're not going to fence all the ponds/streams etc on council land. It has nothing to do with saving lives. All they're interested in is finding ways to make money off of people that cannot afford it. And WHERE did the pond come from to begin with? Did the residents put it there? NO!! So WHY should they foot the bill to fence it, just because their houses are around it?! :an!gry

I completely agree that it's ridiculous. Our pond is behind fences/gates that are at least 1.2 metres high. We use a pool in Summer and we don't have a permit BECAUSE it's fenced off. As far as I'm concerned if a child is old enough to jump the fence/gate then they are old enough not to drown in a pond/small swimming pool. And if they are young enough to drown, then what the heck are they doing outside on their parents property which obviously wouldn't be fenced high enough that they couldn't escape, not supervised by their parent/s? I have two kids ages 4 and 7 and I know when the gates are locked that there's no way they are going to get to the pond/swimming pool. And there is a reserve right behind us with two bodies of water and a child HAS drowned in there before. There are no fences around the reserve. And the fences at the back of most of the other houses are not high enough to stop a child climbing over them. I see kids climb the fences all the time. IMO it's OUR private property and we have done what we can to protect our kids and others from drowning in the pond/pool. I don't see why we should have to get a permit just to have a pond/small pool. I can't even jump/climb the fence/gates LOL Besides, a young child can drown in a bucket of water (has happened) and a bathtub. That means a child COULD drown in a big enough pothole on the road if it rained and it was full of water!

aquariumbeginner32 replied to aquariumbeginner32's topic in Coldwater
Well I went to feed my fantails today and the big chocolate one (Copper) has gone AWOL... I think one of our cats or a stray cat has got it The silver/blue one (Steel) was still there but it has a tear in it's top fin and tail, so it looks like it was lucky to survive! I have taken him/her out and temporarily put him/her with my minnows and guppies in the 64L tank. Steel is only about 6-7cm so not big enough yet, to eat my minnows or guppies. I've decided to get an old bath, preferably a claw foot one and my husband works for a plastics company so he can get clear plastic about 7mm thick or so and I can put that over the top with about a 7cm gap on one side, so basically like the tank that has a small gap at the back between the lid and filter. Even without the lid, I doubt the cats could catch them considering the depth of the bath... they'd end up falling into it LOL And I think the claw foot ones don't have any edges anyway, so nowhere for them to stand. -
It is now official, though I always knew it !!!!

Unfortunately no. I don't drive (don't have drivers licence). And hubby's at work. How about if I move all my WCMMs and guppies into the 15L tank for a while, until I can get the ammonia levels down to 0? I have to get an ammonia test kit. In the meantime I can do a 50% water change every 2 days and then on Saturday go to Animates to get the test kit and whatever else I can that may help. What's available to remove Ammonia alone, at the pet shops? All I have is Stress Coat and Stress Zyme. -

went to check on my minnows and guppies this morning and found one WCMM dead on the gravel. I removed him/her. Another WCMM looks pale. The rest seem fine and the guppies are perfectly happy. ?? -

Yep I always add it to the bucket of water before I put it into the tank LOL I will upload some to Photobucket tomorrow and post a link. I need to get off the computer before hubby comes home and growls lol Unfortunately my concrete slab pond idea didn't work as neither the heavy duty tarp or the pond liner from Mitre 10 was wide enough to fit the slab properly and so there was an overlap and water was going under the pond liner and leaking out the side where there is a gap where the door of the garden shed was and I had put 2 large bricks across the gap but the water just leaks underneath them. But I had an old shell paddling pool so I lined it with the pond liner and put rocks/stones around it and I measured how much water I was putting in there with the 10L bucket and it's about 120L so good enough for just 2 fantails. I'm going to fill the concrete slab with soil and make a garden. The pond is inside the concrete slab and I have a bird bath in there too. Now all I need is lots of soil and some flowers It's going to be really nice. I also got some silver solar powered lights and they are really nice. Hubby is going to try to get to Animates before they close and get me some oxygen weed for some covering/hiding places because we have 2 cats. I made a little cave for them to hide in in the meantime with smooth rocks and a piece of driftwood. And both cats are inside the house until hubby comes home. Photos tomorrow, I promise! -

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get water ager from Animates when we ran out recently, and only have Stress Coat and Stress Zyme. Will have to get hubby to get some from the supermarket. I've already added Stress Coat and Zyme to the water I put into the tank. Thanks Will do water change every 2-3 days for the next few weeks. Hopefully none of the fish will die. -

It says on the Stress Coat that it eliminates chlorine and chloramine and ammonia On the Stress Zyme it says it eliminates nitrite and ammonia. Will have a look at the Prime next time I'm at the pet shop. -

    Thanks I have done a water change. How often should I do it over the next few weeks critter crazy? I usually do it every Friday. Today is Monday. So if I do another on Friday and the same for the next 3 weeks do you think that will be enough? My fantails are in their new home outside in the pond now. :happy2: -

When you say acclimate them you mean putting them in the tank in the bag from the pet shop and leaving them for 5-10 mins then opening the bag and putting some tank water into the bag and then slowly tipping the fish into the tank? I did that. They were from a coldwater tank. And my tank is also coldwater. I did turn my filter off for half a day on Friday because I ran out of water ager so couldn't put more water in and there wasn't enough water for the filter to not run dry. Then on Saturday afternoon I turned it off again when I siphoned some water out of the tank to put into the 15L for the 2 fantails I got for the pond. I wasn't sure if there was enough water in the tank to leave the filter on. I didn't want to break it. After the first time I did a water change and removed the sponge off the filter to clean it and it started making horrid grinding noises because it got lifted out of the water accidentally and I thought I'd broken it I am nervous all the time now. But last night I turned it back on. So it was off from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening also. I'm just waiting for my sister to pick up Abby and then I'm going to put the fantails into the pond and do the water change in the tank and also the 15L. Then if the WCMM is still not looking any better tomorrow morning I will put it into the 15L tank. -

Yeah I am going to put my fantails into the pond today and then clean both the 15L and 64L tank. I may try putting the sick WCMM/s into the 15L with some salt treatment... Could it be oxygen starvation? I know coldwater carries more oxygen than heated water. I have some live plants in there. Maybe I need to add more plants eg oxygen weed or an oxyshell? -

LOL Alanmin! I never hurt my hubby during our two daughters births.. .maybe his ears but I didn't physically hurt him. LOL s3xtcy ... not actually a man! There is physically no way a man could carry a pregnancy or push a baby out. I know what you're talking about though... the lady that had a sex change that was on Oprah and she/he was pregnant. -

Yes I do a 25-30% water change once a week. And I added Stress Coat the last time (on Friday) which says it neutralizes/gets rid of Ammonia. Usually I just use Water Ager but I ran out. But I don't have a test kit for Ammonia. I only have a PH test kit. The Stress Coat apparently also gets rid of nitrate or nitrite ... can't remember which one. -
I have 6 WCMMs and one has become very pale and it's gills look red. It's still swimming around. I noticed one has been isolating itself and just stays completely still kind of arched quite a lot except when I put food in the tank. I don't know if it's the same one. Because when I looked this morning I have the pale one and another one is doing the isolating itself thing, arched. The wild guppies are fine. I can't see any white spots or anything else on the WCMMs.
