  1. Ive read that most of the fish sold are wild caught... would anyone care to clarify if this is true?
  2. I just bred Sterbais so hopefully I can help. In my few experiences the best way to go is put them in a plastic container with an air stone(and air). I haven't tried Meth Blue yet and I will as soon as I have a chance to. Ive noticed that eggs which turn white after a day or more tend to be bad ones. 'Good' eggs will be nice and yellow with black bits(the eyes I think) visible after 3-4 days. You should remove all white ones and ones that have any fungus on them. Once hatched it will take a minimum of 2 days for the fry to finish their egg yolks. After which you need to start feeding small amounts of micro worms as many times a day as possible with 20% water changes every 1-2 days, preferably more often. I do 100-300ml water changes every time before I feed.
  3. Agar Agar is also found in many Chinese food shops for around $3 for 20 grams or so
  4. Specs: 60*43*43 Tank DIY Co2 2 x 24W CFL Daltons aquatic mix 20 JBL balls in the substrate 4 drops of this stuff daily http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Water-treatment/auction-357523449.htm There are 17 or so Native Shrimp in there along with a single Otocinclus. Going to add 6 more Otocinclus as soon as possible. Ive ordered a small pressurized co2 system on Ebay which should be here in a few weeks. Glad you like it!
  5. Please excuse the reflectiveness of the photos, I think its my tanks rounded front or my awful camera skills  I'm going to add some Glosso where the Hydrocotyle is, keeping it in that corner of the tank. Then I feel like there is some emptiness behind the Sword so may add some Val or other tall plant.. I'm also not 100% sold on the Ludwigia behind the Hydrocotyle :-? Any suggestions?
  6. I couldn't wait so I just took out as much as possible and dumped some sand on top. Not much to see right now, will post a pic tomorrow when its all finished The shrimp all went into a corner when I was putting the sand in  ...Anyway I put in some accu clear so should be ready to work on tomorrow morning :happy2: Ill just have to pull out any hairgrass when it comes out  Thanks for the tip about replanting
  7. Hi all! Ive removed the bulk of my hair grass, the water is clear enough that I can see but I have a quick question: How should I remove the last bits of it?? Im going to take out what I can see but what if there will be roots left under the sand Ill be turning the tank into a heavily planted one so maybe it wont matter?
  8. I have an Amazon sword in there already but Im going to change it up soon and add a few crypts and stem plants. Ive only have diy co2 so I figured balancing the ferts in the water column with the light and co2 would be too much of a pain, but if at least the fertilizers are all in the substrate it will only be the co2 and lights that need to be balanced
  9. Can you have too much fertilizer in your aquarium substrate? I understand that you need a balance of nutriets-light-Co2 but if its in the substrate is there a maximum that you shouldn't cross?
  10. Thanks for the hint Suphew, I just got some from Aquila :happy2:
  11. Ive got otocinclus so no chance of them eating the daphnia
  12. Does anyone know where to find some daphnia in the Wellington area? I've tried looking around some places but I havent seen any, the horse-riding place in Ohariu valley is my next stop but if anyone knows where some is already Id really appreciate it Im having a bit of a green-water problem which was fine until I actually got some fish - now I cant see them even though they are there
  13. Would you need to ship corydoras catfish (panda, sterbai, pygmy etc) would I use a tupperware container or a plastic bag?
  14. Awesome! I have some left over from sealing the tank so I can use that :happy2: Just got a pair of male Black Moscow guppies :happy1: Cant wait to try to breed them. Thanks for the help everyone
  15. Hi, Im looking into using coral putty to secure dividers in a breeding tank but I would prefer to be able to remove it later. Does anyone know how to remove it?
  16. Here is a really good article/block of text explaining all the different lighting choices out there and their pros and cons. http://americanaquariumproducts.com/Aqu ... hting.html You can just skip to the part about how great LEDs are
  17. I got mine from Brackishtanklover because Im lazy, but you should be able to find them in most streams. I just couldnt be bothered to go looking for them.
  18. Yep, its hard to tell how many. I can count around 15 most of the time. It seems the medium sized ones survived as I cant see any of the tiny ones I had(2-3mm ) I think I even saw one of the big ones with eggs as it had some white stuff in its body but I cant be sure. They seem to hide out on the backs of rocks most of the time and I think its because of the intensity of the light. I currently have them at 24.5 degrees Celsius and they are just fine
  19. I must point out that it really depends on what LEDs you use, high-watt LEDs are generally high-lumen but they are also generally more expensive. If you're just using them for lighting fish then it doesn't really matter what watt/lumen they are just as long as you can see the fish A LED strip for plants(6,500K) was $120 USD or something in that range, the guy selling them told me I would need two for my 60cm x 30cm and 3 if I wanted to grow high-lite plants(glosso etc). LEDs are more beneficial in marine setups due to the lower heat output and matched efficiency of MH lamps, along with the much coveted 'shimmer' effect.

    Pleco

I don't get why any stores stock normal plecos at all; It would be much more helpful to sell bristlenoses or otos
  21. Ive just gotten around 20 shrimp and they are up around the 25-26 degree mark and doing fine so far. around 5 have died, mostly the larger ones. This is their second day at the higher temperature so nothing final yet
  22. I tried putting them back in but they were annoyingly hard to grab I guess Ill just leave it be
