  1. If you want you can check out the pet centre in Lower Hutt or the Animalz in Petone, but neither of them are that exciting. They also both have the same selection of fish, I find the pet centre has heavier stocked tanks so more variety but the Animalz has marine fish aswell so its up to taste really. If you dont have a spare minute then I wouldn't bother with anything in Wellington
  2. Hi all, My Dwarf Hairgrass is growing really well, there just seems to be one little problem: Some of the runners it sends out are above the sand, Im not really sure if I should push them back in or leave them out :-? So: Leave them out or push back in?
  3. Hmm, so dwarf gouramis seem to be the popular choice. Then 3 gouramis and x amount of tetras it is Yes, I think they are called sunset/honey/dwarf gourami, I like the pretty orange colours I have seen the mosquito rasbora but they grow to 3.5cm whereas the ember tetra only grows to 2-2.5cm. They say its the little things that count Thanks for all the help guys. Now I have to wait for it to finish cycling
  4. Happy Guy Fawkes Day!!! Just came back from the Wellington fireworks display, what did everyone think of it? Did wherever you live in NZ have a firework display? If so how was it? If not what did you do?
  5. If we had tropical shrimp in NZ I would keep one or two red cherry shrimp in it, but then we don't so....
  6. Sorry, I forgot about the dimensions. Its a 2ft long by 1ft wide and 1ft high, around 80-75L I think. Not to sound sadistic, but I dont mind if the tetras eat the fry. Thanks for the thing about 3 rams, I didn't realise two could pair off and kill the other one
  7. Hi all, I just re-did my tank in an Iwagumi-type of setup. I have three rocks that aren't exactly in the 'correct' formation so not really an Iwagumi, just a tank with three rocks and Dwarf Hair Grass. I was going to stock it with a group of 20-35 Ember Tetras but then I thought that would be a bit boring. So, I like Dwarf Gouramis and Bolivian Rams. I have some combinations below: 3 B. Rams + 24 Ember Tetras 2 B.Rams + 27 Ember Tetras 1 B.Ram + 32 Ember Tetras 3 D. Gourami + 26 Ember Tetras 5 D. Gourami + 20 Ember Tetras Which one would you guys suggest?
  8. Has anyone ever used these before or has heard of other people using them? Info: www.americanaquariumproducts.com They come in 6500K and actinic tubes. You can get fixtures of 8, 11 and 13 Watts: 32, 43.8 and 53.7cm respectively. And the bulbs are only 1/4" in width! So what are your thoughts on these? I quite like them because of their compact size.
  9. Hey ar, does the fan on the LED lights make much noise?
  10. If you're still looking, then I remember seeing some in the wellington harbor lagoon-type-thing. But they started construction next to it recently so I don't know how easy it would be to collect them Then the other day I saw some in the plants tank of the Lower Hutt Pet Centre ;3 not sure if they were selling them
  11. CFL - Compact Fluorescent Lights From what I understand these are just ordinary Eco Bulbs I was told on a U.S. forum that you can use these instead of other lights. Has anyone tried this before? The guy had a 75L aquarium with 3.6W/G using these bulbs(3 x 24W), not sure if this would be an overkill in my 75L with no CO2 injector... Thoughts/Feedback/Smart Remarks?
  12. This is the best guide to setting up a marine sump that Ive seen so far :bounce:

    Sump

You will need to have the water level in the sump lower than the water level in the 200L, if you intent to keep them next to each other. Most people prefer to keep the sump below the main tank so you don't see it

    Seahorses

I went to the sea horse farm in Napier a few years ago and they were selling them. Not sure if its still open though. If your LFS has a marine setup then try asking if they can order some in for you. Good luck!
  15. Its the diameter of the u tube. DIY. A bottom of a 2L milk bottle for the inside box that will be held on by two suction cups. I have tested if this works and it does. And seeing as I cant find a small enough box Ill probably have to build one myself from an acrylic sheet 3mm. I have a tool that heats up plastic (basically a powerful hairdryer). So I'm thinking I'll bend the front and back parts from one piece and attach the side pieces with silicon. Then it will depend on if I can get the bottom to be flat or not if not then Ill drill a hole in the side of the box for the tube. Do you know what the outside box is for exactly? I must be missing something because it seems that if I put a tube down to the sump the effect will be the same :-?
  16. Ah I see, Im not good with all the aquarium lingo yet  Yes, I think I'll just get a larger tube. 32mm should do it Im not too keen on drilling a hole :-? so this is the next best option :bounce:
  17. Sorry about the miscommunication  to clarify: By box I mean a box that goes into the tank with holes like this one By tube that pumps I mean a tube that pumps water using gravity. You know when you stick a tube into an aquarium and then you suck on it and if the tube is below the water level of the aquarium then it pumps out water? I might tie down the java moss to the back of the wall to create a backdrop type thing Does everything make sense now? :bounce:
  18. While we're on the subject of whiptails, how big do the red ones get? From what I understand they should be 15cm and the royal ones are bigger? But Im not 100% certain, can someone clarify? :-?
  19. I haven't exactly got an overflow set up yet. Ill get one ready by the end of the week; the space between the wall and tank is very small (6cm) so right now the problem is getting a box thin enough to squeeze in there  the tube that I have to go down to the sump is 16mm in diameter, might have to go bigger though Why a sump? Why not? :bounce: Basically doing one because I can At 1.2m the 2000L/H one pumps 1200L/H so I think i will go with that one, it can also be adjusted down so that the current is not too strong I have a feeling that at 1200L/H in a 90L tank the current may become too strong for a 2cm fish :-? Stocking the tank with around 25-30 ember tetras and then Ill see where to go from there not going to be planted at all apart from a java moss, going to use plastic/silk plants :bounce:
  20. Tanks only a 90L, Ive figured out that with the tube Im using it will pump approximately 300L of water to the sump, now to get it back up  Should I get a larger hose? The one I have right now is 16mm in diameter Im looking at these three right now: MaxOutput: 1300L/H Max Height: 1.2M Watt: 25W Voltage: 220-240V Hz: 50/60 Max Output 1200L/H Max Height: 1.5M Watt: 25W Voltage: 220V Hz: 50 MaxOutput: 2000L/H Max Height: 2M Watt: 38W Voltage: 220-240V Hz: 50/60 Which one do you guys think would suit me best? Im leaning towards the 2000L/H one just because then it will definitely do the job even if it is more expensive. Haha! unfortunately the 0.6m one is a 300L/H pump so no help there :0
  21. Hi, Im building a sump and all the components have been put together except for the return powerhead. Basically Im not sure which one I should get.. I havent seen any in the pet shops so looks like I have to get one from trade me. My biggest concern is what height to get. The top of the sump will be around 1m below the top of the aquarium (these are the places where the water needs to enter/leave). Does this mean I need a 1.2m powerhead? But then the 1.2m powerhead Im looking at has a 1200L/H capacity is there a way to make this smaller? I also already have a 0.6m powerhead that I could put in there, my concern is that it will blow up and then I'll have to buy a new one
  22. Thats makes it easy Im almost 100% ready with the sump and then I need to do something with my barb But after that I can start buying those ember tetras =D I just read something really smart on the web it went something like this "Why do you NEED an algae eater? Do you have a problem with algae? Or is it that you want an algae eater?" I went on to say that different types of algae are eaten by different types of fish. Right now I actually don't have a problem with algae, so Ill cross that bridge when I get there ;3 Ah cool! I never knew that! Oh I see, recreating nature and all that ;3 I don't know if Ill ever be that good...too lazy >.<
  23. Wait, whats green water? I thought everyone wanted clear water??? Cam someone please explain
  24. @Joe: Green tint aye? What does metal halide do? 0-0 Went to the LFS today and they had ember tetras! but they also had harlequins... now Im all confused D: The combo of fish Im thinking of now is 12 ember tetras, 10 harlequins, and a 15cm bottom feeder (x amount of fish that add to 15cm). Thinking of maybe a red whiptail, they looked really cool in the shop but Im not sure how big they grow. On the internet they say anything from 9.5-25cm...
  25. What do you guys do with the fry though? Can you just come round the LFS and see if they will take them?
