  1. From those stats I'm thinking the 1250, now I just have to find one...
  2. So far it's 2 points to Fluval and 3 to Aqua One. What about the differences between the new and old Aqua One models? The new ones have the primer but I'm not sure if there is any other real difference. Thanks for the input, it's great not to go blind buying!
  3. Dang it, this is getting hard  I'm leaning towards the 205 at this stage. I'll probably just end up flipping a coin or something.
  4. I've used the cloudy ammonia and it works a treat. Cloudiness is likely bacteria on such a new tank.
  5. It's more for the support of Chch fish stores. But... doing some reading on the Sun Sun filters, I'm not seeing many negatives. They seem to be pretty solid for how cheap they are. Anyone had any issues with the Sun Sun brand?
  6. I guess I should have put in that I want a built in primer and I want to buy local Both good points though...
  7. Opinions? Why would I pay more for the Fluval? Aqua One Aquis Advance CF1050 http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/fish/pumps-filters/auction-437768588.htm Fluval 205 http://www.redwoodaquatics.co.nz/product_pcid_956.html
  8. +1 I like how gravel hides the rubbish. If I use sand I'm forever vacuuming as I hate visibly dirty substrate.
  9. That sounds like an awful lot of fish poo! If you're having to do that much cleaning it sounds like you have either too many fish in that tank or you're feeding them too much. (or both) I've used a couple of those tankmaids, the media area isn't huge so as long as you clean out the debris regularly it is ample filtration and heaps of water movement. You could try hook up a spray bar and direct some of that movement towards the gravel. This will lift the detritus into the water column where it can be sucked up by the filter. As long as your water chemistry isn't bad then I wouldn't worry too much. As for sand, If you don't like a bit of detritus on the substrate I wouldn't recommend it. Everything sits on top of sand and sticks out like a sore thumb.
  10. Spot on Joe! That's the kind of explanation I was looking for, thanks!
  11. Cool, I thought a low Kelvin rating would make them not so useful.
  12. I'm interested in peoples experiences with low Kelvin bulbs regarding low light, slow growth planted tanks. My partner's father tells me he used to grow plants under 'normal ol light bulbs'. Makes me wonder what people have tried other than T type and other fluros.
  13. Thanks for the tips! Fishing with mice, is this better in low light or is it something they will take during the daylight? I've seen it done but never had a go myself. Looking forward to it!
  14. Hi all, This Xmas I'm off to the deep south for a spot of fishing. I'm aiming for a few trout but would like to have a go at some salt water fishing. It will all be done from the shore and I'm not really restricted on where I can go so if anyone has had any experience I would love to hear how you got on. So far my fresh water destinations are Lake Wakatipu, then head south to Te Anau and Manapori ending up at Monowai. I would then look to head to the coast but I'm not to sure where or what. I've got all the gear, surf caster, heavy casting rod (always refered to it as a salmon rod), and plenty of light and super light gear. I look forward to any replies!
  15. My fave: Steam mussels with heavily salted water, grab them as soon as they open. Chop and then crush up a white onion and a good handfull of super fine chopped parsley and corriander. Fry on a medium heat till you can really smell the flavours, throw in fresh chillies of any variety and crank up the heat. As your eyes start to hurt and the sneezing begins from the cooking chillies throw in about a cup and a half of cider vinegar. When this starts to simmer throw in your mussels. Cook to your preference or remove from the heat straight away and let them soak for a few mins. For extra indulgence and heat, drain the mussels. A good splash of olive oil and Kaitaia Fire chillie sauce in a bowl and toss the mussels through.
  16. Hey Stella, Loving the book! I got it a few days before the whole Feb thing down here and don't know if I ever gave you my congrats! So... Congrats! Great book
  17. Suck mate. I know the feeling well.
  18. Holy smokes! Where do I get me one!?
  19. Hi all, Thinking of setting up my Juwel Rekord 60 (63L) as a planted tank with a few small inhabitants. Total lighting it has is 2x15W T8 both w/ reflectors. I would like to see glosso or hairgrass or something similar. Before I get my hopes up I'd like to know if these plants are achievable with this light setup? (At a real pinch I might be able to fit one more 15W T8 in) Total tank depth is 31cm, substrate depth will prolly be arround 4cm or so. Thanks!
  20. Found it... http://www.theaquariumshop.com.au/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=185&cat=Jebo+Spare+Parts
