Awesome, gonna make a huge difference with a bunch more in there. I've got one of those LED arrays on its way from China. Also got a refractometer and a nano wavemaker (http://www.fish-street.com/resun_nano_wave_maker_for_300_litres_tank_wm-015)

That's the lines I'm thinking of, I just want it nice and stylised. Sounds like you can end up with quite a bit of interesting life in the fuge so could even treat it like a separate little tank on display. Those lights are just Halogen fittings with LED 'implants' though yeah? Good call on the camera settings, but i suspect the white paper in the middle would give the sensor a nice big blob to balance on. I would pick that a manual comparison will still be similar. Man I wish I had something to take a photo of!! The tank I'm planning on using is now temporary housing for two Lionheads and a Celestial, dang earthquakes! Oh well at least my lounge has finally dried out

Wow, what a difference! I love those comparison shots. What are your plans re: filtration? I'm keen to experiment with a canister untill I can come up with a funky fuge idea.

Thanks for the input, I looked at some similar options but wasn't sure about colour separation. ie, would you have to angle the bulbs to a central point to avoid the different coloured beams being distinguishable? If you get what I mean :dunno: And, would it even matter? It could look quite cool! Do you have any plans for the hood? I was planning on a fairly simple wooden hood, seems there is plenty of scrap timber in Chch at the mo, heh  I'd love to see some pics once you get the ball rolling. I can't start mine for about another month and want to make sure I've got everything I need and a few extras just to be sure

Awesome, thanks mate. Gotta love those export sites!

I'm in the throws of planning a small 46x24x24 reef tank, although this size is not set in concrete I would like to keep it around this. I am keen on an LED setup but need some help in selecting the best product for such a small setup. Any help offered would be super. If anyone has a good reason to not use LED I'm all ears as well. Really what I'd like to know is an exact product I can just 'buy now' and it's ready to go in a nice neat and tidy package. Couple of kits I've looked at so far: http://www.guppysaquariumproducts.com.au/lighting/led-lights-moon-lights/weipro-led-lights/40cm-f-led-light-fitting-14k/prod_1529.html http://www.guppysaquariumproducts.com.au/lighting/led-lights-moon-lights/moon-led-aquarium-light/auto-blue-moon-led-20cm/prod_1325.html

I'm sure I'm not the first to get sick of rebuilding my tanks, I've been looking on the YouTube at tiny reef tanks that are sealed, can anyone help me out with some good and solid build guides or info on how this might be achieved...? Example, the second tank he shows is divided into two. This is the kind of thing I'm after but not neccesarily that small.

The bags that oranges and mandarins come in could do the trick.

In my recent experience... I got some of that cloudy ammonia, HomeBrand from Countdown. I setup a 10L paint bucket (clean of course) and added my highest L/h filter that would (barely) fit in the bucket, chucked a heater in on max, I think 35C with a splash of that ammonia. The media in the filter was dirtyish, very dry and had been sitting in the garage for months. Within 4 days I had nitrite conversion and in 6 days with a bit of a rinse in tank water to dilute the ammonia, transfered the media to the filter in the tank and woo hoo, a day or two later, no more funky water! I've done this a couple of times in the last month and using a 1cm squared bit of seeded media added to barren media, I can go from off the chart ammonia to readable levels in 36 - 48 hrs and very high nitrites and nitrates. One thing I've tweaked is, when I want to remove the seeded media I lower the temp over 8hrs or so, taking 2C at a time. I read in some essay on mass scale water treatment that nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria stumble when temps drop too fast. I've also thrown in a few blocks of foam media to just spin around in the water and put a venturi hose on the filter, apparently this helps from what I've read but I can't seem to get it any faster than what I've managed. I had some real cycling issues over this whole eathquake period... and I managed to drop my newly cycled media in the kitchen sink!... Which was full of soapy water My poor little fish must hate me! Since figuring out this trick I look forward to seeding my next tank!! Hope this helps someone.

Only just managed to get back on here, I've got a 70L, 30(ish)L, 2 small filters and a medium (700L/hr) and 3 heaters (25, 50 & 200w) All need to be sterilised but in good nic. If any of this is a help let me know asap.

Got my copy last night. Awesome! :happy2:

Regular spot, although it sounds like we had a few new comers. The stream was alive, crays, mussels, Eels, Bullies and a bunch of other fishies I've got a few shots of a larger eel somewhere, except it me skinning it for dinner Got that one from Lake Kaniere while I was fishing for stinky perch. It was an eel filled holiday! Heres some other fishy.. was using a long range lens to get this so not much detail.

After some post earthquake shenannigans I'm back for some more fish action! (heh, aftershock as I wrote that!) Are these little fellows Banded Kokopu? I've got four of them and a female upland Bully in 70L and a filter of around 700L/h. They are feeding well on bloodworm and hanging out in the current. As you can see there are plenty of spots to hide but they dont seem to ever rest, could this be a stress thing perhaps? Temp is sitting just shy of 20 and drops to about 17-18 at night with plenty of water movement and bubbles. Tank setup is temporary untill I can go on a rock hunt and the wood is browning the water a little too much for my taste. Talk to ya'll soon! It's good to be back fishing

TANK BUILD: Native Riffle (fast flowing) Tank
CodKing replied to Stella's topic in New Zealand Natives
Hello FNZAS, long time-no post! Just wanted to drop a line, I've found a very healthy population of Shortjaws about 30km north of Christchurch, :happy1: -
Wow, yeah, 5 mins before it... how bout that!?

Sounds like a soap opera in a tank to me They are all living together at the mo, in the process of rehousing everyone. I've got a few minnow fry I'm waiting on then the female gets her own place and will hopefully stop laying eggs! I also need to get the adults out as the I have them in an unfiltered tank and the water fouls pretty quick with all the baby food. They are feeding on frozen brineshrimp. I've just sorted out microworms from someone here, hopefully they arrive soon as they are certainly big enough to start munching on them. I'm really not sure what I am going to do with all these bullys! I have the tank space but already have plans to fill it If anyone wants some natives they will be ready in a couple of months
-
Heya, sorry for the late reply... Yip, they hatched a few days after yours. All seem to be fighting fit and playing in the bubbles. I think the female has laid again The male has been crazy territorial but the female seems to know how far she can push it!
-
Thanks for the comments all. She had to go lay them in the hardest spot to capture now didn't she. I have to get through the glass on an angle as well which makes for difficult reflections. That last shot is a pearla huh. I kept cleaning the glass but the dust was rather persistent :[ It doesn't look too bad at that resolution but kinda ruins the larger version. How long can I expect the eggs to remain eggs? Would be nice to try and capture the actual hatching. (Grandpa?! Ouch.)
