he is not selling those on TM, pretty sure he is just breeding them for his own amusement.

 I guess I *could* put some more water in.... I only fill my coffee cup 3/4 full as well tho so it goes against my natural instinct  yeah, that heater is a bit too big for that tank anyway. Looking at getting a jager heater, can they go vertically?

Be kind, am just beginning at this  . The hairgrass is not easy to plant! have hairgrass, a few sagittaria, some indian fern and ambulia up the back (cos I already had some ) I hope I have enough light to keep the hairgrass growing, it is a 20W powerglo on 60x 30 x 30 tank.

Thanks for that - will email greg :bounce: now... for some plans for a DIY lid/tankhood

This is true - when we were kids we had nit checks at school and if they found any they sent that kid home. They are not allowed to do them anymore (invasion of privacy?) and the nit treatment is left up to the families. My niece got them repeatedly because her neighbours mum did not believe in/want to pay for chemicals that worked. So the neighbours kid never got any treatment and consequently my niece had them repeatedly for months and months until the neighbour moved away. And there are a lot of parents that don't have the money to pay for nit treatments and so just comb out "most of them" and the cycle continues... . good nit prevention being nigel no-mates

I do hope that its not any professional that is doing the recommending

yes but there haven't been sufficient studies to show whether it may cause liver damage/cancer etc when the kids grow up years later (this chemical has only been in use for less than 15 yrs or so). It has been classified as a possible carcinogen with links to thyroid cancer in humans, but there really has been very few studies on its effects over a persons lifetime. In third world countries where it is used on crops there have been cases of acute toxicity (tho I imagine the dose would be huge). I also think that human skin and dog/cat skin have different anatomy in terms of the thickness of the dermis and the vascularisation - it makes sense to me to think that you cannot equate safety in dogs skin to be the same as human skin as potentially we may absorb more into our bloodstream than would get into dogs. There is a really good reason why this product is not and will not ever be approved for use on humans. Dont do it, it is not worth it for an infestation that doesn't affect kids health (tho very annoying!) I put it on my dog, but as much as nits give me the heebie jeebies I would absolutely never put it on my kids. Dogs have a lifespan of 10-18yrs tops, I am hoping my kids will live to 80+.... With my daughter I used the good shampoo (not the expensive spray - it sucked and did not kill them). I used it again a week later, and nit combed obsessively. I think the biggest problem is reinfestation - there are repellent sprays you can try, but I just french plaited my daughters hair, and was lucky enough that other parents were diligent with their treatment.

Anyone had a tank made by them and can recommend? Am hoping for get a bigger tank for my birfday, and need to know whose phone number to give to DH Or is there anyone else that someone has had a good experience with? Cheers

I hatched them in my cold garage, coke bottle setup with a desk lamp on them = heat + light. Think I used a 60W bulb from memory. Took about 36hrs to hatch roughly. I did have it in my tank but it was too ugly for me.

I had goldfish years ago as a kid that my cat used to be very interested in watching. A few weeks in a row we would come home and find a fish on the floor a metre or so from the fish tank and assumed we had kamikaze fish, cos our cat was the stupidest one ever (his name was Baldrick). Until we came home and caught him in the act of flicking the poor fish out of the bowl with his paw. He just liked to watch them fly  Maybe check under your bed or around where a fish might jump/be flicked? Huge bummer tho, that sucks.

Thanks, I managed to get it finished last night and planted with hairgrass - and water is crystal clear this morning :bounce:

I have a new 60 X30X30 project, am planning on trying to grow mainly grassy types of plants. I read some ppl on here used Daltons aquatic mix under fine gravel so went and bought some today. Well, I put it in, and put the fine gravel over the top, added about 5cm of water..... and now my tank is mud What did I do wrong? I am thinking I need to take everything out, wash the Daltons off the gravel and start again.... or shall I just get more gravel to put on top, siphon out the water, refill and siphon out until clear. any suggestions?

well, I asked him what they were, and he said "mosquito fish" ....

Awesome thanks for that. Great effort

I love it, well done!! Can I ask how you made it? My 7yo daughter has book week next week. She wants me to make her a big bad wolf costume but all that fur would be $$$$, and would take up more time than I have right now. Yours is awesome

There is a trader on TM who I bought a plant from who had a tank of these he was breeding... not sure why tho

oh fish keepers whats your power bill in the winter
Sunbird73 replied to aaron11's topic in Beginners Corner
Last year from memory June was our coldest month. (but then it was freeeezing last year!). Winter solstice comes too early - the days might start to get longer but that doesn't mean warmer I say another 4 wks of winter - wheres that groundhog? -

Last year (pre-fish) our power bill went up about $40-50 in the winter compared to previous year just in price hikes alone. We have a wood fire and the dryer is the only difference between summer and winter (and heating the hot water tank). Since using our dehumidifier our bill went up $30 per month and we use it about 6hrs a day maximum. So for us, our fish tank electricity (75L, 34L, 22L) would hardly impact at all (and we keep our house warm with our free wood Our power company seems to hike the prices every 3-6 mths and I think that definitely has a much bigger impact than heating fish tanks would! -
I would say that they have taken your complaint seriously (as they should!!!)

Thanks for that. Now I need to decide whether it is annoying me enough to buy some Flourish excel when I already have some normal flourish that will take me forever to get through anyway (I use one drop for that tank). It is the only tank I have that is planted, the other 2 have crappy lights (and apple snails  ).

It seems it has taken hold on my AR380. It hasn't completely taken over, mostly on the heater holder things, little tufts on the glass, but seems to really want to grow on the coconut cave quite a lot. I wasn't really worried before this, thought it was normal but have just looked up BBA on internet and now maybe thinking I should be worried? About 10 days ago I did a big clean out of the tank, big water change, scrubbed the glass, scrubbed the coconut within an inch of its life and soaked in hot water, and soaked the heater holder things in hot water too. Some of it went red (assume dead?) but it is starting back on the coconut and glass again. Do I need to worry unless it really starts to spread? I have flourish that I put a drop in to the tank every few days to a week... And also the tiny snails have gone out of control - is this an indicator of an imbalance - if so, what? (or just snails doing what snails do?) I do a 50% water change weekly, sometimes more often. No Co2 or anything, just lights.

It might be worthwhile contacting public health as there may be more than ammonia in it - and see what they say about it. They may want to you to collect a sample in a sterile container for testing (but this will need to be kept below 4 degrees and be received by the lab less than 24hrs after collecting). I would be wondering A) where the ammonia (nitrogen) came from - contamination from somewhere, either wastewater or fertiliser DH (who is a wastewater engineer) can see no reason why the council would ever add anything containing nitrogen (that would result in ammonia readings) to drinking water. Somebody screwed up... B) if there is anything else in there along with the ammonia (ie. giardia!)

I fed some of my fish tiny baby tiger worms from my worm farm last week. Neons loved them best, the guppies ate them too. All fish still happy. I probably wont do it again tho, I had guilt afterwards. Just didn't feel very sanitary.... Microworms are super easy, nutritious and safe, find someone with a culture or buy one off TM - best $5 I ever spent. Cultures can last indefinitely if you keep them going.

Hi I don't know much about aq plants either BUT... My daughter has an AR380, and I have planted ambulia in there, some hairgrass and some twisted vallisneria (sp???) And some indian fern. And some dwarf saggitaria. The plants that are rocketing away and looking the best are (lush and green) are the indian fern and the ambulia. The hairgrass is managing, and same with the twisted vallisneria and they look good but the saggitaria doesn't seem to like the amount of light in there?? I also bought some JBL (?) fertiliser balls and stuffed them into the substrate under the plants. And fertilise with one drop of seachem flourish every 3days - 1wk. It looks fabulous (before just had plastic plants) and makes such a difference having real plants. I encourage you to get some indian fern or something to start with, it will look great and grows so fast! If your AR380 was not bought new then I suggest you replace the lights in it, the plants do best if the fluoros are not older than a year (in contrast I have an AR126 bought secondhand with lights 2yrs old and only indian fern will grow, but even then not as green and pretty as the 380 with new lights) Go for it! If you want me to send you an indian fern/ambulia cutting PM me I have a small amount to spare .
