Black Hair Algae
Ignore Ira, Chris. How can you take notice of someone who thinks the Oompa Loompas should have been shot?

zebra danio problems
How long has the tank been set up? I thought from when you said how often you did the water changes and siphoning that it was a well established tank.

kuhli problems .....help...
If I had one fish with damage, I would remove it and treat it separately, rather than dose the whole tank. Cheaper to do it this way too. I don't use meds if I can help it and have not done so for years so can't tell you if kuhlis are particularly susceptible to them. Someone else may have had a similar experience though and be able to comment further.

Hi to all
Thank you pegasus, I know you were only having fun but thought I would take the opportunity to explain a bit further as a number of people come straight to the forum and do not realise there is a connection with clubs too. At least at club level you should get good information. A lot of stuff on the Net is dubious to say the least! (except forums like ours  ) This forum is particularly helpful to NZers as it directly relates to fish keeping in NZ.

How many from the States?
I saw the name there and guessed it was you.

Hi to all
For those who don't realise why we push the club aspect ... The NZ Fishroom belongs to the FNZAS - Federation of NZ Aquatic Societies. This is a group of affiliated fish clubs nationwide all wanting to increase interest in the hobby and make sure people set up correctly in the first place rather than do it wrong, have the fish die and decide fishkeeping is a waste if time. Anyone is welcome to join in these forums, you do not have to be a federation member, but we also try to encourage people to join local clubs if there is one in their area. If there is no local club, we offer help in setting one up!

Hi to all
Please stop telling people to read the club section until it is updated Dave. Janey said she would do it, once Cees has given her access. Corrected information for Wellington clubs... Kapi-Mana president is still Roger Smith, secretary is Dominique Hawinkels Upper Hutt president is Derek Hallett but won't be for much longer I believe. Cees is a member so may be able to advise on who to contact if required. There is the Wellington Aquarium and Watergarden Society too but they are not affiliated to the FNZAS and I do not have a contact person for them.

How many from the States?
Hi Aquamanx. You will find a few of us swimming through the Community Tank as well.

sexing chocolate gouramis
Very little sexual difference in chocolate gouramis. Male is slimmer and his caudal and anal fins are edged in soft yellow.

Holiday Feedings for Discus
Personally, I would not feed them. After 4 days they might be more willing to accept other foods as well

Interesting plant in my pond
Any chance of a pic Ira? It sounds interesting whatever it is.

zebra danio problems
There is a wide variety of test kits available from one test to lots. Mine tests for 10 different things but I don't use most of them - we won it. Start with pH, nitrAtes and ammonia.

need a little help plz
Moss used this way looks great but you need to keep trimming it to see the shape of the wood underneath. It can also take over wrapping itself around everything but it is easy enough to keep under control if attended to regularly and looks great. One of our members had a 6ft tank with a moss wall along the whole back panel. She threaded it through plastic netting (with quite large holes - around 3cm, not a fine mesh) from the garden shop. The netting was attached to the top of the tank to stop it falling over.

zebra danio problems
Since it appears to be worsening I would euthanase the danio. More plants would help calm the fish and make them feel more secure as they must be feeling rather exposed at the moment with few hiding places. Have you checked your nitrate and ammonia levels? There could be a water problem although you are not overstocked and do regular maintenance. What physical size is the tank? I know it is 60 litres but is it short and wide or tall and narrow? Just curious

Drowning houseplants
Mine grew very little but that may have been because conditions didn't suit, not because I had submersed it.
-
curvature of the spine- guppy
That's very interesting Sue. I never thought pH might have an effect but it makes sense I suppose. Perhaps they need the extra calcium and the bent ones had osteoporosis
-
retired guppies
usually 2 - 3 years (you never know how old the ones you bought in the shop are) but I have known some to be around after 4 - 5 years.

Drowning houseplants
The spider plant will last quite a long time in the tank but will eventually die.
-
Indian Fern
Yes but the rest of the plant is submersed. It would not survive totally out of water.

Observations for WCMM
I am not sure whether any of them, apart from the betta, would particularly go for the fry. With plenty of plant cover many should survive. Good luck!

retired guppies
Ours always died before they reached the geriatric stage!
