Howdy, First time fish hobby person
Welcome booger. You have come to the right place for fish advice. More details are needed to tell you what your white fish is. I suggest you ask at the shop you bought it.

vallisneria
V americans and V gigantea are sometimes referred to as eelgrass. Usually it is called vallis or twisted vallis. Since you are the one who actually lives in Nelson andyman it would be easiest for you to find out if it is there.

Tank Size and safety
It's a paludarium Alan and npNewbie - take note of Warren and Alan's advice. They have been making tanks for years and know what they're talking about!

New Books
This isn't just the begiining M as I have had a large collection for a long time now. I am a compulsive book buyer and our house is full of bookcases groaning at the weight. A quick tally of actual fish books came to over 90. I have no intention of adding up the nonfish books. None of this includes Grant's extensive collection of computer, electronic, amateur radio and car magazines.

The FNZAS Plant Survey book was done in 1999, before MAF changed the noxiousness It gets sold as many don't know what it is - including those supposedly policing it. Many plants are also misnamed or sold as 'bunch plants' but not named.

Why don't you get back to designing fjords slartibartfast? Perhaps I should offer to lend out the books in return for others doing reviews? Hmm...

Nitrate article in Aquarium World
Please write an offical letter to the editor abut this Midas and I will print it in the next issue. Or, may I just copy and paste this into it? I print articles received in good faith. If I know something is wrong I query the writer but in this case it is not my area of expertise. Perhaps someone else agrees or disagrees with you and we could get quite a discussion going within the magazine. Whatever, it is nice to get some feedback. The only times I have ever received letters to the editor was when I printed an article (written by Alan I might add) about breeding a banned fish and the sh*t hit the fan. Then someone disagreed with an article about making your own heatpads. They might be complaints but it shows some people are reading it!

Hope all continues to go well scottie

Carbon Filters
There is nothing wrong with using carbon Lyn1 but it is expensive cos you have to change it so often and really not necessary. Most people only use it if they want to remove something quickly from their tanks (like medications)

Technical Question
See at the top of the page is a bit called "profile". Click on that and scroll down until you get to the bit about avatars. That is what the little pics are called. Take note of the max sizes allowed.

There is a fish club in Dunedin. Have you considered joining? They meet 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7pm at the Pet Warehouse, cnr Strafford and Manse Sts.

Sand?
I have L Malawis. They don't dig cos there isn't enough sand for them to dig in.
-
Sand?
I use sand in my cichlid tank - just enough to cover the bottom. I got it from the local beach

about my tank and some questions
I work for a GP who gives me a few tablets of it when required.

What does this Do ?
I can answer 2 A sump is where you use a large container (often another aquarium) as a filter. You fill it with baffles to direct the water flow, filter wool, bio media etc like you would in a canister filter and a large pump to circulate the water through it, into the main tank, and back again. It gives you a lot more water volume, huge filtering area and somewhere to put all the gadgets like heaters and stuff, keeping them out of the main tank.

In a Cichlid tank ?
Just because it has been done doesn't mean you should. I don't think it is fair on the fishes.
