    smashed heater

she will be fine just keep and eye out for white spot , hope you are ok i have done that before and man it hurts.
  2. you can over clean you know !! dont clean the gravel like you would your house you want some muck in the tank, and the only way you have to do big water changes is if you are breeding , sorry your fish are breeding and you are feeding the babies big time then you do more water changes. put more cat fish in your tank and plants and then you will not have to touch the bottom of your tank! as for filters inside filters every week to every two weeks but canister filter dont need cleaning often and shouldnt be cleaned until the water flow slows down! put a sponge on the intake then you clean that one a week and leave the canister alone, if you have to clean it more than once every 3months you are over feeding out have to many fish in your tank, i havent touched mine for 16months and its working great!

    Another Newbie

welcome , you are in the best of hands on this site just ask away and you should get lots of help,
  8. they are fine i often have people take fish on planes (you have to put them in water) go to your lfs and ask them if you can buy or have one of the boxes they get there fish in from he importer. when doing up the bag on a short trip like that just use your airpump to put air in the bags , put 2 bags on them just to be on the safe side and happy traveling
  9. goldfish dont do well out of water for to long about 5 min tops, i had someone come into work last week because a kid at her daycare took the fish out of the tank and put them out side in the rain to have a shower and then let them dry off inside ( poor fish)
  10. no the guy had drift wood from his tank in the back of the car he was moving up here to auckland and was bringing the fish he didnt want to me, plecos often bet stuck sucking wood and get taken out of the tank
  11. that is normal with alot of fish one always stays smaller. mind you in saying that a friend had a discus that everyone called runt (of years)as he was really small then one day i turned up and he was the best looking fish in the tank, he was bigger than a bed and butter plate and the colour was to die for so never give up on the runts . yes come and see me at the meeting i will ask my importer about them when i order fish next week, 8)
  12. i have had someone drive up with wood from there tank in the back of the car for 7 hours, and it was still alive when he got to my shop, but having the wood keeped its mouth wet
  13. i had a look at the pic the other night and was glad i did , looks like you guys had a great time, mind you every queens b/d weekend is good isnt it, this time it was just longer and warmer!
  14. if you move her she will/could lose the babys, you could slip her into a fry net do it in such a way that you are not moving her, its easy just feed her and put the net under her, (only works with a few fish) also you could put lots of plants in the tank or wait she will breed again really soon
  15. any pet shop can order them in for you, it might just take time in getting what you want, i do that for people all the time , and because i do it that they dont go in my tanks i dont charge as much for the fish!

    snail eggs

go and read Post subject: Giant Snail Problem! i could cut and paste what was said but everone had something good to say . but fish normally dont eat the eggs , just the babys when they hatch
  17. you can cut a potato in half and wash it then put it in your tank at night, i put it in a net and then in the morning before you put the lights on take it out , snails will be on the potato! you will have to repeat this a few times maybe even for a week but that way you are not killing the snails in the tank. (use a new potato every night) or get loaches they do a nice job, even rams can clean them up sometimes. you can use the had a snail but what happens when a snail dies it puts out eggs so when the babys hatch you have to use it again and can be hard on some fish and plants . doing a good water change brings the snails out of the gravel. over feeding can give you snails and make them breed faster, good luck
