  1. I never went to University so can someone who knows about research advise - if studying a particular scenario in order to look for a result, do you also study the opposite or other situations for comparisons? For instance we are looking at fish that have died and the conditions around that, should we also be looking at fish that have not died from the same households and the conditions around those? If so, this spreadsheet needs to get even bigger.

Liam, it's not just YOU with a vested interest in your new tank :spop:
  4. my CPDs were a combination of fish bred by a friend, fish I bred myself and about 6 that were purchased. Also I don't seperate my equipment from tank to tank, it's all the same nets and buckets, so theoretically I have spread it everywhere but the fish don't all die. My view is that unless we know for certain that something has been caused by something else we shouldn't say that it 'must' have come from a particular source. I guess the difference is actual or direct evidence versus circumstantial.
  5. Seems you guys have got the diagnosis and the source sussed. So how do you explain all the fish we've bought that haven't died yet?

*waits for the next 'real' bill to come in........
  7. :rotf: how about e) text her to say it died and ask if she wants a surprise replacement to love when she gets back.....
  8. Yes, a whole tank dying would indicate a contagious disease of some sort, like what happened to my CPDs. But what I'm asking is do you know where they came from all the way back to the egg, and who has cared for them (or not) along the way? Do you know of every bug and parasite that is living in your tank? Were they similar ages, were they inbred, there are so many variables.... if the whole tank has gone you have the opportunity to bleach it out and start again at least.
  9. I took 3 photos of Monty this afternoon and in all of them he seems to have misplaced his eyes..... the world is just tooo boring for him to want to open them Reclining Then moments later, reclining in order to block the doorway This is just prior to getting my finger bitten through a hole in the box
  10. I have accepted that some fish are going to die no matter how well I care for them, and I do fuss over my fish. I just think that imported fish are delicate little creatures that have undergone all manner of stress and tribulation to get to us, and that would be enough to weaken them to make easy prey for bacteria or parasites that could cause harm. We've upset the flow of nature by bringing the fish in and taking it out of its natural environment, I think it's a risk inherent with the hobby. Also it's impossible to know how old many imported fish are, unless you know the supplier - even if they are small they might just be runty rather than young. Fish bred in captivity should be easier to predict what is bothering them as it's likely you'd know a bit more of the history, but again, unless you're a biologist and a vet, you may never know what killed the fish. I think it's Jaxxnz whose signature is 'fish come and go' and I think that's pretty true.

I'm not quite old enough, I was only just born when that photo was taken. Here's me with my mum a few weeks after I was born. That's my brother GrubCheeks with us.

  13. ... that runs through War Memorial Park off May Rd Mt Roskill, along the back the houses and ends up in Mt Albert? It looks like an above ground stormwater and land run off type collection area - large parts of it are manmade, and some parts of it look deep enough to harbour critters. There is a a fair amount of oxygen weed in places and perhaps puha or water cress. I was trotting through and didn't have time to stop but I think it warrants a trip back there.
