  1. Depending on how you stock the tank (and from your posts you will have some med- large fish), I don't think that you will have enough filtering capacity with that design. I am setting up a similar volume aquarium to yours and have built a 130 litre sump for it. I can upload a pic if you like. I would listen to people like David and get someone to drill the tank and make a sump, just my opinion.
  2. You could just cap off the Hansen fittings, then its sorted if you want to run a sump in the future.
  3. Mitre10 have them as laundry bags for about $7 if you don't want to order from ebay.
  4. Looking great, glad to see my old tank going to good use. When are you setting up the bigger version?
  5. Hard to say, I thought I had 3males and then 2 of them were protecting eggs. I think the other is a male, I will let you know if I decide to sell it.
  6. I got them in April when they were first available. This is a pic of 2 of mine, the middle fish is the male, about 6-7cm
  7. I got mine from organism, I may have a spare if 2 pair up again.
  8. If you want similar colour to the EBJD you could try Electric Blue Acara (came into NZ as Neon Blue Nannacara). I have 3 and the male is colouring up really well.
  9. If you are looking at painting it dark blue be aware of the tints in the paint, some blues made with violet look very different on the tank with lights on. I tried about 5 different blues to get 1 I liked.
  10. I have just painted the background of my new tank with resene test pots, I found their paint sticks well to glass. I doubt it will leach any chemicals through glass.
  11. If its not on the floor dead, it will be hiding in the gravel. I have been through the same thing when I got mine, they are good at hiding, it will be there somewhere.
  12. can anyone recommend either of these or another alternative. Head height will be about 1.3m and wanting flow of 2500-3000lph these are the 2 I am looking at in the 6000 or 6500 http://www.fish-street.com/jebao_dc_water_return_pump http://www.fish-street.com/jebao_km_eco_variable_pump any suggestions appreciated
  13. I do like that blacky still looks quite dark, will he loose any more of the black?
  14. I will get some more steel and heavier wall for the top lengths and spans and use the 1.2mm for the legs and add a few more maybe 12 legs, 2 on each corner. I have half a sheet of flooring chip, that is why I was going to use it, but can get ply if it will be better. Is poly best under the tank or closed cell foam? I am having trouble finding poly that isn't 40-50mm thick
  15. Is plywood better than flooring chipboard?
  16. No a friend who is a good welder will be doing it, That is my main concern, I am planning on using 20mm chipboard flooring for the top of the stand to disperse the load.
  17. I am about to build a steel stand for my new tank. Tank dimensions 1500l x 700w x 600h Stand will be 700h max maybe lower. I have 35x35mm x 1.2mm square tubing, it will have 8 uprights and 5 front to back spans with some diagonal bracing. Does that all sound ok? Any suggestions?
  18. What store? I have seen some royal whiptails marked as farlowella.
  19. I like the look of this, Thanks Greg. Would it be better to have all of the water pass through the bio rather than it being able to flow over it?
  20. Yep hopefully water changes with system running, I have water supply right above where the sump is going, and will be running a drain outside. Stocking will be from my 300l: 2x A.heckelii, plecs 3x L142, L200, L14, 3x Royal whiptails, fire eel (stunted to 20cm) plus what I decide on adding. Hoping to have some big sword plants as well Not after gin clear water, I would prefer to have the ability to leave it for a couple of weeks and not have to worry.
  21. Thanks for the input. I am going to try and avoid filter socks unless I have to, I want to keep maintenance low if possible. I have most of the glass I need to make this any way and those dimensions will be perfect for the shelve it will go on. Where is the best place for a drain for eater changes? Top of the first compartment?
  22. I'm not too worried about the settlement, it is more there if I want to add filter socks or more mech in the future. Hopefully should have room for heaters, I'm using aqua one stainless heaters at the moment.
  23. I am going go make a sump for my new tank which will be 1500 x700 x 600 Sump planned to be 900 x 450 x 350. Turnover approx 2500-3000 lph Feedback appreciated, sorry about the basic drawing and pic quality.
  24. Sparkling or dwarf gouramis if you can find some.
  25. What species of Farlowella do we get in nz? There are a few on the list but I have only seen f. acus.
