  1. OH! Theres another option - sell the small one... reckon anyone will want a small guy that may have stunted growth?
  2. So... Anyone local got some small-ish (bout 6cm) discus for sale?
  3. seems a bit unfair that he don't get to grow - perhaps I might need to find another about the same size and put in the 100l tank
  4. hmmm... yeah one is slightly bigger, but how come the other 3 managed to grow but not the lil guy? So ya think that increasing water changes is better than removing the lil guy? Well that sounds easier...
  5. I get 5 baby discus all at the same time in about August last year - They are beautiful and I love them BUT one of them is way smaller than the others... I am a bit concerned that its growth is being "stunted" I could move it to another tank by itself where there are other fish. Would the stress of being the only discus outway the benefit of being away from the growth inhibiting hormones? Anyone got any other/better ideas? Currently they are in a 200l tank - I have a heavily planted 100l tank that I can move it to.
  6. er... NO! Thats sound expensive and illegal. I was just making sure I wasn't missing something right under my nose. Although this secret group of swapping and selling sounds great, I was just hoping there may be somewhere that I can pick thru plants and choose some. I am really enjoying the crypts and swords that I have now (sick of trimming stem plants) so was wanting to add more but not many exciting ones are in the stores.
  7. Aside from pets stores & Trademe, where does one buy plants?
  8. Or how bout just using Flourish excel on a tank that small?
  9. Nice pic P44! So anyone using the Cichlid food?
  10. Thanks P44 - something my king tiger plec will like then? Is that the Algae wafers? Anyone using the Discus Bio-Gold?
  11. Can I please get some feedback on these foods... In particular for cichlids - anyone using it? Anyone have experiences to share? Thanks in advance
  12. Well now, that was more entertaining than a thread with someone correcting someone else's spelling/grammer. A very smart idea! My question is - how often does the fert need to be administered into the tank? I was under the impression that those things went off every 10mins or so?
  13. Right o - thanks for that 4days & Jen. Shorter photoperiod - will do. Am I reading that right - use excell AND DIY c02 or instead of? I will start using the Flourish comprehensive twice weekly and look into NPK - I will also test for nitrates as a baseline and keep a log as 4days suggested. I may need to move the sword as I the lotus is half covering it and that may attirbute to the green algae. I will let you know how things go - may even treat you to some pics! Thanks
  14. answers to further questions Photoperiod? 11 hours on a timer Filtration? Standard Blue Planet filtration - I have remved the carbon so, noodles, and white wool. I do have a u/v filter but don't have it going full time How much excel are you dosing? I have it but don't use in this tank I see you are adding Potassium but what about the other macros? I have it but don't use it can get some of this if needed... http://www.seachem.com/Products/product ... Trace.html Sounds like you have plenty of plants.... That's a good start - Yeah - have done the stem plant thing and it too much work. So have pulled out all the ambulia, cabomba, vallis and polysperma
  15. Hey Jen (and others) Can I get a little help with my tank.... Dimensions & volume of tank - 100l Blue Panet Kingdom - 65cmLong x36cm Wide x45cmHigh Lighting - T5 18w 6400K Red & T5 18w 10000 White Substrate - Daltons Aquatic Mix & Black Silica Sand Plants - Green Lotus, Red Lotus, Anubius nana, Dwarf Sag, Aponogeton, Enchinodorus parvifloris tropica, retrospirils & amazonicus, Cryptocoryne walkeri, undulatus, petchii, balansae, & wendtii. Figured that if anything got too big I could just pull it out. Fish stocking - x3 Oto's x13 Male Guppies and WAY too many GBA's & Trumpet snails! Ferts - currently using JBL Balls, Sera C02 tabs on alternate days. I do have Flourish Excel, Potassium, Iron and Comprehensive but haven't been using them since adding all the crypts. Goals - to have a fully planted tank that the GBA's will enjoy and required little maintenance - weeding that is - water changes aren't a prob, I do them weekly. Problems - Green Lotus taking over! and everything else seems to be growing slowly (red lotus seems to be doing better since I added a load more plants! Even got a pup from it!) Way too many trumpet snails I am unsure what ferts to use and how often. Anubius seems to be developing big brown spots on leaves (only a couple) Green algae on the some of the leaves of the parvifloris. I did have some green thread algae but that seems to have gone after I removed it manually and not returned? Any advice would be greatly accepted :happy2: Thanks
  16. The buds on mine took about a month for the flower to come out - then it only lasted a day before they wiltered!
  17. Nah, I've seen it flower - now I will pass it on to someone with more space in their tank.
  18. This is my Rose sword and wot a pain in my rear! Not only has it taken over just about my whole tank ( :dunno: I know... perhaps if I had researched it before I got it I would have known better!) but it keeps sending up these annoying storks that grow well above the tank. These have always had buds on them and I have waited for them to flower which hasn't happened before cos I am too impatient and I cut the top off it and put the lid back on. It doesn't help that my helpful electrician partner moans that leaving the lid off lets heat escape and costs more to run. So I finally get fed up and decide to give this away, I had even arranged to pull it outta the tank last night to give to them and what happens? The dam thing decides to flower! And what a beautiful flower it is! Stoopid plant - It's gotta go (but I am glad I finally got to see it flower!)
  19. anyone got any idea what sort of crypt this is... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 230796.htm Many thanks
  20. Thanks Alan - I was hoping I didn't need to cut all the leaves off (that wld be such a shame!) I am going to have a play with it tomorrow - think I need more plants yet tho - would like to produce something like this... viewtopic.php?f=29&t=49214
  21. I managed to get some very nice balansae plants from Alanmin - these plants have LOADS of roots and beautiful long leaves. What is the best way to plant these? Do I just shove them in and cross my fingers... or do I need to trim roots/leaves first? I am also planting some other crypts also, I have been reading in lots of places about crypts melting shortly after planting, Is there anything I can be doing to prevent this? I am planting wendtii, petchii, undulata, parvifloris tropica also - any advice greatfully accepted. Thanks JJ
  22. Woops! Forgot to answer the question! There are shuttles that are a set price (from memory $45 a head) and you can even book one which is what we did last time we came back from Aussie - worked really well - stepped off the plane and into the shuttle straight home. Can't remember the name of the company tho sorry.
  23. Phoar! All Day thats a pretty full on interview!
