  1. I was thinking about getting a UV filter also - anyone with experience in this area also?
  2. Tank currently empty - 215lt Aqua One Cube - Filter came with it - An Aqua One Aquis 1000. I can't decide on the substrate type and colour yet so won't be able to start filling till I have that decided. I plan to have driftwood & plants in there - Fish will be... Blue rams, BN, Guppies all currently housed in my other tanks - not sure what else yet.
  3. Right - thanks guys - I will keep an eye on it and most certainly will rinse in tank water. This external canister thingee is big and scarey but supercool!
  4. Just got a canister filter - there are instructions on how to clean but doesn't indicate how often... Is this weekly, monthly ???
  5. Thanks for your kind offer to help Barrie - I just got all my stuff form the NZKA this morning so I will print that and read thru - I'm sure I will have questions after that.
  6. I too am keen to join the Killie elite group - anyone in the Tga/Mt area into it? I currently have guppies (just a few) and some Blue Rams - I am getting another tank shortly and wouldn't mind getting some advice on set-up etc for these beautiful fish. Anyone interested in helping me out?
  7. :bounce: Your tanks are looking fantastic BikBok!
  8. I agree - 38l won't be big enuf for a Lionhead ... but if there has been no heater, what sort of algae eater do you have? I thought that aside from the hillstream, loach they were a tropical fish?

    Tank makeover

That substrate looks like black silica gravel? I have some in my tank - looks fantastic! I got a 5kg bag from my local petstore... think it was about $18
  11. Bollocks you say? Right - might go back take another look - it is possible that I was reading the wrong one, I did look at loads of different fish with different needs.
  12. Thanks Mel! I have seen some dwarf loaches at Animal Antics - but the info thingee recommended 150+ Litres - my tank is only 34 litres so probably not kind to put them in there... Someone had suggested i try putting peat in the filter, this apparently prevents the shells from forming properly?
  13. er, scuse me guys, this might be a silly question BUT... do kuhli loaches eat snails? I have noticed that my little tank with just kuhli's and a fighter have not snails but the other marginally bigger tank has loads of dem. I am a newby (had my aquariums for 4 weeks now) so my apologies  if this is a silly question.
  14. TRUE DAT BB! I have the bug! Love the fighters and see so many gorgeous ones - I want dem all! :bounce: Look forward to seeing pics of your new babies in the coming weeks.
  15. Thanks SamH - I hadn't seen that one! I'm more thinking of more perm homing for them not just breeding - I had envisioned a bigger tanks with decent sized areas - Might talk to a glass person and see what they can come up with.
  16. Just wondering if there is a special type of tank designed to house 2- 4 fighters at the same time? I would really like one tank with some sort of divisions in it to break it into 2 or 4 areas - but only using one filter and one heater... Is there such a thing? I like the fighters but don't want to maintain multiple tanks. I currently have small 2 tanks with guppies in one and a fighter in the other. I am thinking if I could find a tanks with divisions then I could turn my smallest tank into a Quarantine tank. Any suggestions out there?
  17. are you serious? OMG! Is there a warning on the bottle? Surely if this was the case it would fall into a dangerous goods issue and those selling it would have to be warning people?
  18. Yaye new tank - So which tank did you end up getting? Does the new tank have similar filtration media? Perhaps you could take half the noodles from the old tank to put in the new and vice versa... then some of the bacteria will be put in the new tank?
  19. Thanks BB - no doubt our paths will cross often :bounce: us newbies can learn together...
  20. Apologies Trumpetgear - I didn't realise there was a 2nd page so didn't see your reply. I now have a 2nd tank - I would be very interested in the white(pink) tail you mentioned and some females - can collect in weekend if you want - am happy to pay for them too. I'll give you a call later in the week
  21. I find the lead things that weigh down bunches of plants work well at sinking veges
  22. poor wee thing - Thanks for your reply, I will keep an eye on it.
  23. Not sure if this is a stoopid question or not - I am fairly new to keeping fish. I got a couple of cory's today, I am concerned about the smaller of the two. The dorsal fin looks different - the thicker looking bone appears to be unattached to the rest of the fin... almost looks like the sail has come away from the mast? Is this normal or has it been ripped? Will it be problematic?
