  1. how is she today? Sorry, I don't know enough to give advice but was wondering how you are getting on.
  2. wow, what truly awesome looking fish ! I am in wonderment! My daughter and I just got two fighters yesterday, a red female and a bue male (VTs). They are in seperate tanks as we arn't planning on breeding them and wouldn't have a clue anyway! I really admire the beautiful halfmoons.. and some of thr crown tails I've seen too. Maybe one day ....
  3. oooh .. my guppy had her first babies. I'm sure there were 7 .. now maybe 5. at 3 days old they are sure growing fast and I can already see which ones are the stroppy ones lol. Do they always get such a big fat tummy after feeding or am I feeding too much?
  4. I watched the BN chase , yes chase one of the kuhlis around the tank. So BN is now in my betta tank. And the Kuhlis, well they're out and about again.. just like they used to. Hope I can get another BN eventually that won't be so bossy! I never realised how well they could smell.. part of the problem was, as soon as food was put down for the Kuhli he'd come and take over.. ignoring his own peice on the opposite side of the tank! In his new home today, I dropped a tablet and he was there in seconds... amazing.
  5. no I don't mean the gonopodium lol. it's the front "chest" area , it sort of looks pointy/sharp instead of nicely rounded. Anyway he was in a separate tank for a while that i also slowly added salt to, but sadly he didn't make it. It's been very stressful ! But my guppys in the main tank are doing great , and I came home to 5 fry today :-) So that has taken the edge off for my daughter.
  6. thanks, I think i might move him to the other tank for now and if he gets too big , sawp him. I'll try another little BN in a few weeks time and see how that goes. then at least the Kuhlis get a little break.
  7. I've had the BN for a week now and since he's been in the tank , the kuhlis have become shy. As soon as they come out , the BN comes right over and pushes in amongst them and they freak out and go back into hiding. He will nudge them and flick them with his tail. Not sure if he's trying to be social or just mean or even territorial. I haven't seen them dance at all since BN has been in the tank :-( Everything I've read suggests that they should get along fine so was wondering what other peoples experiences are. Am now thinking of moving him to the 22L tank with a betta but that might be too small for him. He's about 2.5cm at the moment. I really want to give the poor kuhlis a break. Have I got a one off bossy BN or is this normal? If I do move him, I'd like to put another BN it's place . any suggestions?
  8. mine is sucking over everything .. there's not a surface in the tank he doesn't go over and he's very active. Loves cucumber and peas. But he's being a nuisance to the kuhlis and they don't come out as much .. The kuhlis come out for food but the BN moves in takes control. ... even if we drop it in two diffetrent spots, he'll cruise between the two!! That's if my greedy "miss Piggy" - a pregnant guppy hasn't stolen it first lol. Can just watch them for ages.. very amusing.
  9. I got the hexy today and will set up tomorrow. the flow control knob will be handy if I need to slow it down. But the return spout part (callled a silencer) was not in the box although it's listed in the booklet as being included. I'll have to go back and see what the story is. The spout would bring the return water back down near the surface for less splash.
  10. I just need one and he doing great! I think he's made my Kuhlis a bit shy though as he keeps going under their fav driftwood hidey.
  11. it's been over 24 hrs since I dosed the water and he only pooped a very tiny red thread (unless it's thin red poo) .. the rest are still hanging out his but. So i am to presume they are still alive and the aviverm has lost it's efficacy. The new lot won't arrive till mid next week. Hope my guppy can hang on till then! I think the white pimply things are either gone or reduced greatly because I can't see them anymore. How long can fish survive with these worms at the hanging out stage if no treatment available? Should I cull any fry that my female guppy has or is there little risk her babies will be carriers? Thanks for any advise. I'm having to learn hard and fast with fish keeping!
  12. well I managed to put together an small 10L isolation tank for my poor boy guppy. He got some white pimply spots which I suppose are bacteria? I'm adding salt to the water slowly and then will leave him for a few days and observe. There are now visible worms hanging out his butt so another treatment of AVIverm... it might be out of date but I've got another bottle on order just in case and will treat both tanks. The other fish seem fine int he original tank but I know this doesn't necessarily mean they aren't infected. If the female pregnant guppy has worms... what will become of her babies? if they get eaten by any healthy fish.. could they become infected from the fry?
  13. Sure will JJ Red female and Blue male ..VTs
  14. well guess what guys two more went up the filter last night. That spotty one, and another I got in the weekend. The first one has stayed away lol. I found them this morning by chance when my son wanted to look at the carbon cartridge. I thought they were dead! They were lying still in very shallow pool of water with water trickling on them. But as soon as I moved the cartridge ,they wiggled and I put them back in the water and they swam to the Indian fern and wrapped themselves amongst that. aggh ! they seem ok though. I have ordered another intake strainer piece that is shorter and hopefully less inviting for the kuhli to investigate. This fish keeping business has me worrying like they were my human babies! But I love them so much! haha
  15. how old are they when full sized?
  16. Well my guppy is still doing ok, and eating etc. I'm pretty sure now he does have worms so will they just get pooped out after treatment and how long will this take? I'm doing waterchanges daily at the moment to keep on top of things and all the other fish are fine. Are Callumanus eggs visible to the eye? Now to a slightly unrelated but relevant question... I am starting a NEW tank this Friday... and had planned to use some noodles I placed in my existing tank for the purpose of getting a bacteria colony ready for the new tank.. but now with the probable worms .. i need to ask if I should just start with complete new media and cycle afresh. ... or are the noodles OK? They sit under the black sponge and charcoal cartridge and wool.. (an Aqua one setup)
  17. lol JJ you getting the bug! I'm getting two fighters in a fortnight ... one girl , one boy , seperate tanks, not for breeding. Can't wait!
  18. thanks I have dosed my tank with some AVIVERM I had in my cupboard for my bird. But I'll buy some new stuff just in case it was out of date. The only thing I'm unsure about is the dosage. There was an older thread that said aviverm can be used 1ml per 22L . My tank is 34L so I used just over 1.25ml (1/4 teaspoon) I couldn't find the little ramshorn snail to take out... poor thing.
  19. oh and if i do use it, does the charcoal filter need to be removed?
  20. yes I have some aviverm for my cockatiel but it's been in the cupboard for 2 years so not sure it's still good. I don't know for sure my fish has worms but is it safe to treat anyway?
  21. where can you get this stuff? My LFS does not sell any worming treatments and I think my guppy may have worms. he is bloated and I think i detect a little bit of red around his anus. How common are callumanus worms in NZ ?
  22. ok... I'm trying to look really closely at my guppys anus and I can't be sure but i might be able to see a tiny bit of red .. so now I'm worried that he might have worms. I rang two petshops and they don't have anything for it! What do I do ? please help! Will a salt treatment work.. I'm worried about that as I also have kuhli loaches and no hospital tank. What do i need to do next for my guppy?
  23. yeah, normally I wouldn't .. but my daughter really wanted this one ! Anybody got any ideas? I just noticed him flash on the gravel a couple of times ... like he was trying to scrape a poop off or something. But I've been watching him for a few hrs and it's the first time he did this.
  24. picture 2 best shows the pointy bit I was talking about. Should I be worried?
  25. I have had this male Guppy just under 3 weeks. I got him form a petstore and the staff member dropped him but still sold him to me. Anyway , he bloated up the first night and the next day looked normal again. He has been fine,. eating well, swimming , playing etc. But today he looks bloated again and a bit more subdued than normal. Has not been fed today as they had a good feed last night and I didn't want to feed him again today till knew what was wrong. I've attached some photos for you to look at.. note the boxy pointy part on the front of his big belly. Approx under where his pelvic side fins are. Does he have worms? if so how should I treat him? It's hard to see in the photo but I'm pretty sure he is not prickly like the dropsy photos I looked at.
