  1. sorry to hear about your Bristlenoses. That must have been very upsetting to come home to.
  2. thanks. so no special attention required? I haven't noticed the other fish nipping him , perhaps the female might if she gets annoyed . she's a feisty one . But his tail was torn before he came to us. I guess he's just a small strain too , my 9 week old tuxedo girl is a big as him in body!
  3. Thought i better put this on my own thread rather than hijack the finrot one... I've had this guppy boy for 6 weeks now and he came to us with a tatty and torn tail. The tear seems to be healing very slowly but the tail is still tatty. I don't think it is fin rot but what do you think? Would acriflavine dips help with this? I have given him a few salt dips and kept the water clean. He hasn't grown much during this time either, the female we got with him has doubled in size. The tear was just above the yellow bit in his tail..didn't go all the way to the base, but almost.

    FIN ROT

can i post my snakeskin pic here or shall I put it in a new thread?? might be useful under the heading finrot to establish what fin rot looks like (which i don't hink mine is but worried it might get that way)

    FIN ROT

would acriflavine work for a mild case? My snakeskin guppy came to em with a torn tail and it hasn't got much worse but is looking a little raggedy. I don't think it's fin rot but has not healed either. We've had him for 6 weeks in good water and I have also given him some salt dips.
  6. oh :-( sorry to hear about feargal, you tired so hard ! I had to help my first guppy out (clove oil and vodka) and it's not a nice feeling at all !
  7. i''m starting to get concerned about one of my guppys too.. about 10 days ago she had a couple of fry but remained fat and has not had the rest. She is getting huge now and I can see the fry inside her.. she's golden so it's easy to spot their little eyes and balled up bodies. I have read that females can sometimes die after birth but I'm beginning to worry she'll even give birth! There are 3 females and 2 males but the males mostly ignore her in favour of different female.
  8. that's no good! How big is Rustys cage? We have our bird cage (cockatiel) on a winch type thingee that gets hoisted during the day when we are out so the cats can't bother it. I have water gun trained them to stay away and they do ignore the bird when we are home .... but you never know what they do when your back is turned. Anyway... get yourself a squirtgun and tell the flatties you WILL use it every time their cat goes near Rusty.
  9. they start with smaller amounts of fry and the brood (right word??) gets bigger as the female gets older. I had one guppy give birth to over 50 fry but I've heard numbers of over 100! My first lot of fry was about 8-10... of which 2 did not get eaten. The next two lots of fry I am unsure of numbers as I thinks some got eaten before the morning.. anyway... 2 survived from the 2nd lot and none from the third lot. I have a female betta in the tank and she also helps with population control. I keep 3 females and 2 males , and I'm happy with that ratio. Any more females and I think I would get too big a population explosion.
  10. just a Q about Guppy size About 6 weeks ago we bought a young snakeskin male and a young female golden guppy. I thought all the golden females in the tank were quite large compared to the tuxedo girl I had at home. Since then the golden female has grown so big and is now the biggest in the tank. But the snakeskin male is still small and is the smallest in the tank. My youngest 8 week old tuxedo female is almost as big as him. I know the males are not as big but he is 1/2 - 3/4 the size of my other male. (tuxedo) Are there size differences related to their colourings/markings?
  11. Hi and welcome bex! I'm sure you'll find this forum as useful and friendly as I have. I love bristlenoses. Cute little fish. beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Rebecca (no gender icon yet!)
  12. I have three females... and two males. One female gets all the attention and the other two are mostly ignored! Do platys need the same ratio? I've got a male and female platy in my quarantine tank , they give each other short chases but otherwise don't seem to be harassing each other.
  13. redose in 5-7 days because there may be eggs hatching that haven't been vaccumed up. and then a third dose in 7-10 days if you want to make extra sure... one tiny missed egg can start the whole process again! The worms in your fish should have been paralysed and now need to be passed. A pea might help with that! (i chop tiny bits for my betta and hand feed (he eats off my finger) or mush it between your fingers and put it in the water. (no skin/shell) Epsom salts can help if you think your fish is constipated as sometimes happens with fish infected with worms.
  14. It's all fine now . Since I got the new intake strainer and moved a bossy Bristlenose to another tank I have had no kuhli up the filter. But they did go up another two times while I was waiting for the part! The last one i discovered as I went to change the parts over... and he was very hurt! looked like he was bleeding inside and a fin was all red... afterwards he lay very still on the tank bottom and the BN wouldn't leave him alone.. that's when I decided to move the BN out to give the poor Kuhli's time to recover. Two months later they all look good as new ! and they are also coming out more now that the BN is gone. We put in a different BN and they all get along fine and will even share food.
  15. My hexy Midi filter looks the same, just shorter in length and the flow is 200/L hr becuase it's only a 22L tank. . it just has 3 compartment... bioballs - carbon wrapped in wool ...then ceramic noodles. .. I've worked out it's heaps cheaper to make up my own media pack for the middle compartment, than buy the blueplanet packs! Filter strength .. I have it set to medium low becuase there is a Betta in the tank but I can turn it up if required (which I do after a water change). Personally I think my aquaone AR380 does a better job at filtering. .. but the Hexy Midi is still good too and looks great as a display tank . The only thing , with it being taller than it is wide and the filter set to low ... I find more muck settles in the gravel but a light vacuum every week takes care of that.
  16. I have a small Blue Planet hexy Midi .. but these arn't the same as the larger regular shaped ones. I think they're nice looking and the built in light/filters are convenient.
  17. I've seen them at "Plastic box" (payless plastics) Check out the bathroom areas of hardware stores too..or maybe even the warehouse.
  18. could it be the same gooey slimy stuff I was having on my heater suction cups of ONE particular brand? seems to hit new heaters of that particular brand. I have had it in all 3 tanks when I first set them up.. but no fish losses because I wiped away and suctioned off every day. I'm hoping to have some dwarf puffers one day .
  19. they're beauties... love the parent colouring!
  20. once you see the worms hanging out their butt.. they are already laying eggs in the water! So I would treat the whole tank - remember to keep the lights off and do your gravel vacuum and large water change.
  21. yep you're right! Just looking at my notebook and I did muck up .. I should have used closer to 0.2ml for a 22L. That's based on 24% w/v and the recommendation of 2.36mg/L of levamisole HCL... pure levamisole is 2mg/L Aviverm is not pure levamisole. From what I can understand the HCL part makes it more stable especially at different pH levels.
  22. mine are now finally clear! I just kept wiping it away regularly.
  23. oh no! it does sound like callamanus. I lost my first ever guppy to this as it was sold to me already infected. I couldn't get the worming treatment quick enough as it was hard to find! You don't say where you live but you can buy aviverm (which contains levamisole HCL) at BIRD BARN in west Auckland. or online at www.hippo.co.nz http://www.hippo.co.nz/1884,0,0.mel this is what I used to treat the rest of my tank. I imagine poultry supplies would also have it. finding the exact dosage was hard. The aviverm from hippo is 24% w/v levamisole W/V and I used a dose rate of 2.36mg/L (about 1ml for 22L) the lethal dose for fish is 250mg/L so it's pretty hard to overdose. Good luck!
  24. yummo do you use any special seasoning?
