  1. I emailed the seller first and she said he has always been that way so I'm happy he's not diseased . She has offered to take him back, give a refund and give me a female also as she has no other red tuxs she wants to sell. Don't know if I'll be able to find the time to take him back this weekend as things are really hectic as we are in the middle of selling and buying a home and it has all happened very very fast and we need to find a new place, like yesterday! Will see what we can do though. I am disappointed in the fish but I don't think she deserves bad feedback, maybe in her eyes she didn't think it was so bad. Maybe I'm being too critical! I am just very aware of not breeding from bad stock and perpetuating guppy problems. Not that I'm a serious breeder or anything, but I do sell or give away all the fry and don't want to sell bad guppies to unsuspecting buyers. Plus i don't want to have deformed baby guppies in my tank either - not a good look!
  2. Thanks Cesarz very informative. I will try him with one at a time as I don't want him in the main tank and end up with a whole heap of little crooked fish lol. His spine is not grossly bent but enough to notice that it's not straight. looks like a little humpback. The wobbly swimming is also noticeable. But he swims fast and I did have him in the main tank for a day and he had no problems chasing and mating with a golden guppy he took a liking to. (she belongs to my snakeskin so he's not allowed her!!) Thanks for your help. Will be intersting to see how it all pans out.
  3. oh I also have one other tux girl with plain tail but she hasn't had fry for several months now so not sure she is still viable.
  4. to get red tux offspring? I've got a thread in diseases because i ended up accidentally buying a male tuxedo with a bent spine that swims kind of wobbly. But he has a lovely big red tail. I bought it sight unseen and hubby picked it up for me on the way home from work. The fish is currently separated from any females. I wasn't going to breed from him because of the deformity but am having trouble finding a nice red tail tuxedo that i can breed from. So thinking about putting him with one of my girls in the hopes of getting a nice red tux boy. My girls are: yellow tail tuxedo, goldens, and a grey with a tail that looks fluoro/neon blue. Would any of these give me a red tail boy? thanks for any advice.
  5. that sounds like a good idea Sam. If i can't find another red tux in the next few weeks I might do that instead, and keep the nicest offspring. What would I need to put him with to get a red tail tux? I have a yellow tail female tuxedo, some goldens and a grey female with shiny light blue tail (is that called neon? )
  6. well I've put him in the quarantine tank where he can live out his life and help keep the tank cycled. No more babies for Mr Wobbles. He'll be company for the little platy that is also in there.
  7. oh I have emailed the seller but no reply. Plus if anyone has a nice healthy red tux male in South Auckland I'm still looking for one... plus a snakeskin/cobra. I am wanting new blood in my tank to avoid inbreeding.
  8. hmmm... I bought a male tux from a breeder on TradeMe. It was sight unseen as I asked on one of her fry auctions if she had any nice male tuxs of breeding age. She listed a 6 month old tux and I got my husband to pick it up on the way home from work. Well he has a lovely big red tail but I'm not happy with the way he looks , sort of like a humpback and he swims wobbly. He has a fat tummy too. But other than the wobbliness he is active, eating, chasing the girls. When he is still his back half hangs down. Also , I think he is way older than 6 month, he seems very large and has a lot of white colouring on his back. Just doesn't look young to me. Not sure what to do with him now , he was supposed to have come from a healthy tank so if it's not disease... it must be genetic? Are any offspring likely to inherit this deformity (it's not major buy noticeable) I don't particularly like him but can't just throw him out either! Any ideas on the cause? ... or anyone want to take him off my hands?
  9. Hollywood fishfarm if I want to go in to the city, otherwise petpac out here lcoally for supplies.
  10. i find more frequent water changes really encourages growth too.. something to do with lower nitrates I read somewhere. I feed my platy fry decaps 3-4 times a day for the for first week and then just crushed flakes twice day and they grow really fast. BTW went to animates in the weekend to look for guppy but most the males had torn tails and a lot of females were clamping their fins.. so I didn't buy anything . My Platy i got from them however have been the picture of good health, but I went in week after week till I found some that looked good AND appeared healthy ..
  11. really! i didn't know that. Mine is at 25-26oC, thought that would be plenty warm enough.
  12. ahh OK, so are you sayign TB should show up when they're young? My female guppy in question is probably around 10 months old. (presuming she was a juvenile when I got her from petshop) She had three drops of fry and then no more.
  13. I always seem to get more girls than boys for some reason.
  14. congrats JJ .. look forward to update pics! Have a good time in Aussie
  15. is fish TB very common? I have a female guppy who hasn't had fry for months and has a flat tummy , she just doesn't get fat any more , meanwhile the other females in the tank are constantly chased by males and she gets ignored. Today when I took a close look at her I thought i could see a slight kink in her spine but not sure if I imagined it after reading this!
  16. oh I would LOVE a borneo sucker... but don't have the right set up. an HOB filter just won't cut it right? So another to add to my ever growing list of "one day" tanks.
  17. my fighter tends to be a bit of a pig and he's in with platy . So once a week i don't feed them in the morning as I usually do (so they have to go hungry) and they get a bit of pea each that night and nothing else. Seems to clear out their system.
  18. i find the easiest way to sex them when they're young is to look for the gravid spot in the females.. you can see this very early on. (often around 1-2 weeks) And in the boys his lower anal fin will start to elongate and thicken on the outer edge as it starts to become a gonopodium which for my tuxedos is around 5-6 weeks and for my snakeskins around 4-5 weeks.
  19. BikBok

    Whiptail ID

he is about 5-6cm now and will not eat any veges whatsoever.. I know of at least one other person who has bought from same breeder and their fish is the same. Will eat tropical flakes though. He was timid when I first got him but now zips around during day as well as night. .. especially when his fav food is on offer (decaps)
  20. Welcome! what part of Auckland are you?

    Ahoy all

Welcome to the forum. Love to see pics.. whata lot of tanks!
  22. Is there somewhere I can buy just the chemicals I need for water testing without having to buy the whole kit, it seems a waste of money to keep paying out for test tubes and syringes/pippettes when i already have plenty of those! Somehow I've ended up with powder left over from my JBL nitrate testing kit and have used all the liquid. I would also like to buy just the solution for ammonia testing. Is it the same chemical across all brands or different? (mine was a Hagen nutrafin from hippo)
  23. i used JBL filter start in my (much smaller) hexy tank but I never got any ammonia readings at all.. it went straight to very low nitrites and then low nitrates and I was testing every day. Several months on my nitrates have risen slightly (to around 10-20 before a water change) , I'm only testing every 10-14 days now but never any ammonia so not sure what happened with my cycle but the fish are all happy. I also use TLC bacteria once a month .
