What have I done?! That's only ONE page of ONE year of the competition! And you like almost ALL of them! 8) The lawn effect for me wasn't hard at all. Given almost 6 months, little care and only separating the grass out, it's turned out pretty well.

Is this a breeding/rearing tank or do you plan on selling these fish? What a coincidence, I'm about to shutdown my 27L nano Hairgrass (the plant that dominates that tank you like) and have a heap of it I need to get rid of. It's not too hard to grow either, been doing fine under a 23w light, 27cm deep tank and in normal sand. So you like the "filled in" or "lawn" effect?

Is the sky blue or green (respectively)? :lol: 8)

Fertballs, pssh. I'm yet to see the results. I've used a couple under my stems and there's been no change in growth. Now lighting, that's where it's all at for me. I'm assuming nothing can be done plant-wise on the 120cm tank, right? So I'll focus on the 3 footer. I'll need some specs though. Lights? Fauna (animals)? How many of them? Can they be moved? Flora (plants)? Filter? What look are you going for? NOTHING at all? It's cool, at least you know where to get help. As I always say, find a picture of a tank you like and we can go from there and tell you how to make a tank like that. I prefer tearing down tanks and starting from scratch, this leaves a nice blank "canvas" to work on. It'd be good if you could move the fish elsewhere for a while if you'd like a heavily planted tank but there's no reason why you can't add a few more plants here and there without removing anything. The extra aeration certainly won't help the plants but it's not going to do too much damage if you only have a few plants. HTH

What type of filter? If it's a canister then float the media in the tank before it goes rank from lack of oxygen.

I reckon a HUGE planted tank would be a nice change from these monster tanks, not that I have anything against them but I've never seen a really big planted tank. As for livestock, one or two types of tetra, at least 50 of each and some catfish

Perhaps once I sell all of the BNs in it, too much hassle trying to keep it clean and catch them in a planted tank. Flourite is expensive but good luck with this anyways, I'll be watching to see how it turns out. 8)

I have one that's 80x25x40 (wxdxh) filled with 50+ BN babies. This is making me want to plant it now... 8) For this tank you can't 'scape very deeply (front to back) so I'd pretty much have hairgrass/glosso in the front with stems covering the back.

Cichlids, thats a good idea Cam. I'm guessing it's too small for one or two of the larger (15cm+) Cichlids?

I would go marine but the cost is a bit much for me right now. In terms of FW stuff, I'm not sure where to go with this tank. Haven't quite found the right thing yet. :roll:

Yes, but sometimes there isn't enough time or the shops are out of it? If a fish is in obvious pain and suffering, it's best to end it quickly as possible. Going down to grab some from the shop may take sometime, especially if you're in an isolated area and it needs to be ordered in. It's just a thought

Or if you don't have clove oil, rapid immersion in almost frozen water works. All I did was get a cup of water, put it in the freezer till there was ice forming, broke up the ice and quickly drop the fish into the water. Small twitch but then nothing. Can be done with boiling water but is apparently like being cooked alive for the fish. Messier options include blow to the head (instant kill) or decapitation (which may not kill the fish straight away). Yes, it will. I had my male build a large nest a few days ago but had to lower the water level down to half way for spawning. The nest was built in the corner of the tank so the outer bubbles stuck to the place where the water level had been. The rest of the bubbles followed and stuck to the side of the tank underneath the top ones. So the nest may be damaged (if not destroyed) but if you're going to fill it back up it might be okay. I'd suggest pulling the water level down to 10-15cm if you can do so. HTH
