After adding CO2 and diffuser yesterday, I decided to add fish today. Also put in some more rocks as suggested 3x Female Betta splendens 1x Clown killie 1x Blue eye killie FTS Close up on rocks and H. polysperma Above view of H. polyperma Home grown female fighter against H. polysperma Blue eye inside the diffuser, it appears to enjoy playing in the current Fish seemed to be gasping for air when first introduced, this has now subsided. Will have to monitor them when the lights go out though. Hairgrass is sending out little runners, H. polysperma is taking off, Lilaeopsis and Glosso haven't seemed to change. Enjoy
  5. Total blackout, no light at all in the tank. Make sure everything is covered up well so no light gets in anywhere. After that, cover the areas that are getting hit by sunlight to avoid this again. HTH

 Someone's excited Got my PMDD from HaNs
  9. I was unaware of the current lighting on the tank. Personally I'd focus all the T5s (if possible) on the focal point of swords and just have a double T8 strip running for the anubias. Also, forget the whole watts per litre theory, it's rubbish. HTH

I grew a hairgrass carpet in a 27cm deep tank (+5cm of sand) with only one energy saver, two should be sufficient. I would use a few as spotlights over the area you want to grow the grass in as opposed to spreading them evenly across the tank (unless you want the whole tank to be hairgrass). I believe it is, yes.

I'm not dosing any ferts yet, will probably start PMDD in a couple of weeks when the plants are established and I find a suitable bottle for the PMDD. What size is your tank? What are you trying to grow?
  12. Is it not possible to use a shade that comes down past the bulb or build it into a hood with fans?
  13. - Should I be dosing fertilizer? I have some Flourish Comprehensive but I haven't used it as I'm afraid I'll cause an algal bloom (Already having some issues with hair algae) Personally I'd wait 3-4weeks before dosing any ferts, wait until the plants get established. EDIT: I have recently learned that the plants may already have established roots therefore ferts can be dosed immediately. - Is the lighting adequate? There's 78W of T5HO. Currently thinking about buying another just like the one I got - would this be worth it or unnecessary? It seems like plenty of lighting to me. - Should I invest in a CO2 system? Like, without CO2 will my plants still grow but just more slowly? Or will some of them melt away etc? Try DIY CO2 first, you should be able to get enough from DIY in a 200L tank with correct diffusion (close to 100%). EDIT: WARNING, PH CRAHSES MAY OCCUR. USE AT OWN RISK - What do I need to do to keep algae away, and plants looking great? Frequent water changes and balance. HTH EDIT: Sorry for any misleading advise and/or inconvenience
  14. Maybe he means near the sand at the bottom of the bottom pic?
  15. I have couple of spare two foot tanks, only heater for one though. Maybe drop off a couple of pairs
  16. I love the floating like trick. Can I know how it's done?
  17. Geek! Been playing around with focal B&W and my cats eyes lately 8)
  18. I had mine breeding in a standard 81L 90x30x30 tank with a polysperma jungle and got between 10 and 20 each time, the female was old so she only had 2 or 3 batches. Just popped the fry into a floating breeding net if I caught them and fed them ground flake from the start.
  19. Personally I'd breed the guppies like crazy in a 100ltr heavily planted tank, catching fry as you see them and put them in a floating net breeder. Release them back into the main tank once they're big enough or into a separate tank if you'd like to sell them. What kind of tetras?
  20. Personally I haven't seen MTS in ages, ever since I started adding CO2 I think. Or maybe it was when I sold my gravel. One of them. CO2, acidic and soft water all hinder the snails ability to survive due to it being harder for calcium to be produced for their shells. Still see the odd ramshorn or two though.
  21. Good idea. We'll see how this method goes for now, H. polysperma is already pearling
  22. It starts to float the moment CO2 enters the bottle, the more CO2 the higher it floats. I have larger bubbles escaping every now and again, mainly micro bubbles though. In theory most of the CO2 is mixed into the water rather than expelled as bubbles. That was my first idea but I wasn't sure how secure it would be. Also worried about leaks from the pipe. Also another one of my first thoughts, but it's bad enough already without adding anything to it. Air seems to get caught in the filter anyway, I'm not going to add CO2 especially as it's in the lounge. Thanks for the suggestions though 8)
  23. Because they cost close to $20 incl. shipping and I have no job. This cost me about 30mins of my time and an $0.89 bottle of soda Gee thanks, now I notice it  It's almost nothing when standing at a normal distance from the tank, but when I put my ear up to the glass it's just the same as water flowing from 3cm above the surface, pleasant even 8) Thanks, one bow and one hail is heaps
