  1. so no one knows what the bunch plant in the first one is? It looks like a cool plant, similar to that narrow java fern.
  2. just stumbled across this while looking at fish food, its rather interesting. Amazing they keep 15 adults in 2.5L tanks have linked to the cached version i was reading, rather than the full .doc http://74.125.153.132/search?q=cache:BF9ulx2AKosJ:www.sars.no/facilities/fishRaisingprotocol.doc+novotom+aquarium&cd=19&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=nz&client=firefox-a
  3. it sounds like a tomato fertiliser
  4. i got our sand from the quarry at the local river, nice and clean. But that silica sand does look a lovely colour
  5. is that pretty close to what hff is charging you? It sounds like good prices, i really want to get some to try in our pond in summer.
  6. trademe seems to have glosso and stuff sometimes, maybe more when it warms up? Otherwise there's those two plant shops i listed the other day?
  7. here's an icky example of crooked guppies i just noticed, see pic 3 - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 423398.htm
  8. dunno, i just call them all snakes for want of a proper name and yep, of course he likes his mum, she didn't eat him lol
  9. that was the conclusion i came to, i know the bettysplendens woman swears by them. I was so worried about overfeeding and dirtying the water so i stuck to just worms for the first few weeks, then started adding the bbs. Decap are so much easier, but they weren't keen at first, doesn't have that wriggle factor. I imagine the novotom would be the same? And where did you get it from, price?
  10. i've only seen fighters in barracks at shops, i imagine they'd be much happier in tanks. I think much of the problem is that if your going to keep them in such a small volume of water they really need daily changes to keep the water quality up. I've seen one breeders fishroom full of tiny jars, all with brilliantly healthy fighters, daily full water changes, and thats what i do with my jarred bettas.
  11. so whats novotom? I started mine on just microworms, they had a few feeds of bbs too, then when they consented to eat decap bbs started feeding them half that and half microworms. Now that they're getting bigger i might try some chopped up bloodworms. The novotom sounds good though..
  12. yeah that work they're doing with fertility control is interesting, if they can reach their goal of a possum-only std that makes them infertile it'll be great, humane and effective, as long as they don't build up a resistence to it
  13. yah! :bounce: put me down for a copy, i've been converted
  14. so cute what are you feeding the little ones on then?
  15. yeah, but if its the sort of muzzle that lets them pant properly they can lick things up too
  16. wow they change so fast! can't wait for mine to get there...
  17. cool should be one of the boys in your tank then, i'd call him a snakeskin
  18. ditto, i've never seen healthy, lively looking fighters at an lfs they always lie on the bottom, surrounded by mouldy food
  19. good colour for only 5 weeks looks like a snakeskin tail to me, whether or not he gets the patterns on his body too might take a while longer to see. How long have you had the mother? Cause his dads probably one of the guppies she was with before.
  20. yeah but they can't watch them constantly when their working, it only takes a second for them to lick something up.
  21. i'd love to go to pureroa one day, kokakos are amazing. my opinions on 1080 are solely on its use around here, on farmland and small tracts of bush and pine plantations, since this is the only place i've seen it used firsthand. I know the drop they did last winter along the highway was awful, there were dead goats and birds the length of the highway in the ditches, and i know several farmers lost dogs on their property from it. So my arguement against it is that they shouldn't even think of using it in areas like that, where access for hunters is easy, much of it is falling on farms, and poisoness dead animals are left littering the highways. Surely in places like this trapping and shooting would be more appropriate.

what colour is the sand? Its easy to wash, just fill half a bucket at a time and run the hose into it on full until the water runs out clear. Boring but it works well. My vote has to go to heaps of plants, wood and little fish - cardinals, male killies, little rainbows, maybe a pair of rams for something bigger. But i say that to everyone because thats my dream tank lol. My 3ft just has betta jars in it and some oxygen weed, i'll be interested to see what you do with yours for some ideas when i'm ready to use mine properly
  24. i just run our dollhouse leds off a couple of rechargable batteries, no need for a power plug and stuff then
  25. yah he's made it overnight fingers crossed everything else goes well for him
