    buying a fishtank

HI Jude  I have always had a custome setup, tight from the start and I have found that if for any reason( like me being too eager) you get the wrong thing i.e the light is too short or filter too powerful then you have an easier time changing it than on an intergrated( where you would have to change the whole setup) With having a custome Ihave external filters that hang on the side and it means I can change the end it sits on to give the fish a bit of change. As for the hoods, holes and cord, you can trail most of them down the back of the tank, and I just have a pre made light fitting that i purchased and it just sits ontop of the tank, so no hassle with custom hoods. hope this helps some. IMHO It also gives you a wider scope for the sizes that you can choose or have made, as you stated above. B
  7. Welcome Alana, As you can see we are a friendly lot. you can find us in the chat room most nights from 8.30pm - 9pm Cheers B
  8. What colours are these generally. I have one that is blue with red fins and is a bueaty of a fish, but only know of it as a Dwarf Neon rainbow, not even sure what sex. Is a dwarf neon the same as a dwarf neon australian?
  9. Finally got some pdate pics taken Not a good picture but the orange is the male and the bronze and black my main breeding female Again not a good picture but these are my 3 female platties.

  13. it's a start and not all of us can afford to do it all at once, i started by getting bits and peices with my first tank and it took a matter of months to get it all setup how i wanted it.
  14. As all know I have platties and will shortly be aquiring some guppies I currently have 3 females and 1 male along with about 30-35 babies bout 3 months old. pics to follow as need to get some better ones.
  15. it's glass with a brownish tinge to it, like you see on the old coffee tables.
  16. I have 3 cory's, 2 chinese algae eaters, a botia striata and a khuli loach which between them all keep the gravel in my tank very clean indeed. hope this helps you jude B
  17. Just wondering if anyone has tried constructing a tank with smoked glass, does this make it too dark to view the inside of the tank and most importantly wil it reduce the amount of algae growth. any comments or thoughts( or personal experiance) would be appreciated before I go and price out the glass.

    Culling

depends on how you do it caryl usually I wrap them in a wet paper towell before putting them in the freezer. Slows the body down gradually. can't be as stressfull as sitting out of water gasping for breath waiting for the killing blow.
  23. the one mentioned in the article was vallis spp and they were also talking about banning oxygen weed aswell.
  24. I saw the afore mentioned article in the local paper and it says that it is not banned in wellington but they are looking in to it at the moment, as it has been dumped in a lake just south of wanganui.
  25. welcome vdoubleyou, hope you find a lot of helpful info to make your fishkeeping pleasant and not stressful, I certainly did B
