  1. Having a lady around doesn't help either! :sml1: But I've got nothing on my fiance, I spend about 200% more on fish than she does on clothes lol!
  2. I've actually come across the first article before but re-reading is always good.. Thanks for sharing, these are the guys to emulate for quality fish lol!
  3. First aro at age 6?! You lucky dog! At age 6 my parents were reluctant to buy me plastic toys because I had destructive tendencies lol..
  4. I have a feeling that we might be just SLIGHTLY obsessed with our aros lol!
  5. Time for the aro to do some resistance training haha! My aro loves current. He will swim under the return pipe or the garden hose during WC, reminds me of a dog biting the wind from a fan lol.. So cute, but so vicious lol.
  6. Ahh well, probably just leave it then lol. Don't want to risk a surgery over cosmetics haha. I saw a twin head wave maker which has a 6000L/ hr output, reckon that will be alright? I want to get some undercurrent going as well because I suspect there are lots of dead spots under the driftwood which the water flow/ my siphon can't reach, so I thought a twin head would be quite suitable.
  7. That's the thing about a green, you don't see the colour developing, but there are different times when the green is more shiny and other times when it is deeper. I don't understand how it does that because it's all under the same lighting at similar times of the day when it changes - mood maybe? lol.. I think eventually I want to also tan my green, just as an experiment lol, I wanna see how GREEN it can get. I'm also working on trying to reverse the gill curl on his right side. I've put in a small powerhead that I have lying around which I've noticed has improved it a little bit by loosening up the gill flap that's flipped over onto the cheekbone. The curled portion is the soft tissue, so I'm hopeful that it can be reversed over time. I'm thinking about upgrading the powerhead to a wavemaker, but I'm not sure how strong I should go. Had a quick look on TM and for $50 or less I can get a wave maker from 1000L/hr to 12000L/ hr - how much is too much?
  8. Yeah, after seeing your RTG, 50cm is BIG, but anything after that will be for personal glory lol! Just a waiting game between me and the fish..
  9. Well, I have no doubt that for his age, he is smaller than what he should be, but the hope all along was that good food/ water/ space would help him to recover. So far, so good but the real proof will be when he is maxed out eventually. Massivore will probably be a big help lol. To be honest, 60cm is really an ideal, not sure if he can get that big in captivity or how long it will take, but worth striving towards I guess!
  10. lol! Greedy fish, eh? I'm sure that my green can SEE the prawns in the clear plastic container before I drop them in. I usually leave it on top of the tank (but out of sight) for a few minutes to defrost. But once he sees me approaching with the container he hovers around the top and occasionally bumps the glass even though he can't see anything. (psssstttt.. I think they're onto us!)
  11. Well, give it a go lol.. But all I'm saying is that my green has attacked and killed fish even while being fed his normal meals lol. Maybe I just have a mean fish, he likes to bully the other tank mates into submission. Remember to have a backup plan for the new aro, just in case!
  12. Maybe you should give it a little while to develop and see what it is?
  13. BTW, just measured the aro again tonight.. He measures in at........ 38cm! :happy1: :happy2: That would be a growth rate of 11cm in just under 5 months. The best thing is that this is pre-massivore diet. His new diet will include a minimum of 4 massivores per night, so I'm expecting his growth rate to explode soon. My eventual aim is to get him to 60cm ( ) But I'll settle for 50cm+ if it can't be done lol. Aiming for the moon, baby!
  14. Thanks guys! Making me feel so much better now haha.. :happy2:
  15. Just gotta look out for the silver then! Never, ever underestimate an aro just because they are assumed to be "less aggressive" than other types of aro. To me, all aros are the top of their food chains (or very near to the top), so they own any environment they are in. Just because people have given jardinis and greens a really bad rep for their aggression doesn't mean that silvers aren't potential killers either. Be careful! :sage:
  16. It's for the larger size. If Henward is correct, then definitely bite the bullet and get massivore. If you simply multiply the cost of the smaller packet to get the weight of the massivore packet, massivore is actually quite a bit cheaper. Breaking it up into smaller pieces gives you more versatility. The other option which Henward suggested (floating sticks) is also good and cheaper, but the growth rate might be slightly less (though it is still very substantial). Of course, small daily water changes will help your fish to grow really big, really fast too. Scientifically proven and published.
  17. Could just be a preference I guess? My green doesn't really like crickets that much, even though most of what I've read has advised that crickets are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE to aros. Not for mine lol..
  18. Cool, thanks. I'm pretty sure that the structural portions of the stand are treated timber, but I'm not 100% sure. Haven't seen any holes yet, so maybe I lucked out this time? lol
  19. Nice stuff! After a feed of prawns on Wednesday, my green went into 'auto-fast' yesterday, so I'm expecting a big feed tonight. Just a question, when you stuff the prawns' heads, do you remove the very small barbs on the sides of the head, beside the main horn? Or are those small enough not to bother about? I've realised that prawn heads can fit 3 massivores inside, so it's worth keeping lol.
  20. You'll have to consider also that you've got 2 oscars in the tank. There's a lot more on the net about oscars attacking arowanas than arowanas attacking oscars from what I've googled, so add that to the risk list lol. The silver may or may not go aggro on the new aro, it depends on your individual fish's temperament.
  21. Yup that's right. It's the same content in each pellet, just different sizes. But, having said that, if you compare the weight/ size of the pellets, $60 is cheaper in the long run than buying a few of the smaller packets. I guess you can start with one small packet for now and get massivore when he's bigger. If he's not eating, starve him! A few days' fast always gets fish eating..
  22. I reckon aros are just naturally keen jumpers lol. My green sometimes jumps when he hears a droplet of water hitting the surface from the condensation on the lid! But geez, that's a huge appetite for your red considering its size. Nice work!
