  1. I'm seriously hoping it's not structural yet lol. Based on some mental guesstimation, I'm pretty sure that if the cabinet gave way, the room would be ankle deep in water lol.
  2. Hi all I've recently discovered some termites crawling around my tank cabinet which worries me because it's made of wood. I haven't seen any holes or wood damage thus far, but the termites are visible. The tank holds about 750L and the glass is about 10mm thick so the thing is pretty much immovable without stripping everything. The sump lives inside the cabinet. How do I get rid of the termites without potentially killing my fish? I couldn't find any termite food at pak n save, but I'll have a look at a hardware store soon as well. Anybody have any solutions for this? Much appreciated, thanks.
  3. I once saw a heavily deformed aro in a fish farm in Singapore which still carried a hefty price tag. I think it was a gold xb and its spine was like an elongated Z. Terrible thing to see it swim, but apparently people are willing to pay for it, maybe because it's weird?? :dunno:
  4. Don't do it lol. Fish keeping is expensive enough, don't add DLSRs to your hobbies haha or you'll die broke and alone. :sage: But if you really wish to venture, I would recommend the Canon 1000D or 550D for a beginner - I think prices have dropped since I last looked late last year.
  5. Ooohhh lordy, lordy, lordy, those are some :nfs:.. !drool: !drool: !drool: Umm, if there is a Mod passing by, can we sticky this thread please? The discussions and the info are excellent, would be a shame to see it get lost in the sands of cyberspace. Thanks!
  6. I almost considered a silver but the DE put me off, and also the length of it lol. But I'd buy this one lol!
  7. Henward, that's a :nfs: man. Colour looks great and the body shape is fiiiiiine, especially like the spoon-head shape. Good score!
  8. Good luck with that! I don't think I've ever seen a silver that didn't have drop eye. I'm pretty sure that with silvers it's a genetic thing, with the other breeds it might be bad genes and/ or bad diet. You can't fight genetics!
  9. lol.. At least you're stuffing the shrimp, so that's the best of both worlds. I can see that you're gonna spoil your kids in the future as well haha! C'MON! WHERE'S THAT VIDEO?! :an!gry You've been stringing us along for too long, Henward!
  10. Not that I've heard, but it would be awesome if we actually had some decent shrimp breeds in NZ.. Yamano shrimp FTW! :nfs:
  11. Omg, good buy! lol, that's so cheap..
  12. Small aro with big fish is a risk because they might bully the aro, or get most of the food. Remember also that young aros are very skittish, so having bigger tankmates constantly around it might cause it to freak out and jump or just be under constant stress. Then again, getting a big fish would mean that the tankmates are at risk. I think the best option would be to get all the fish when they're young. Besides, half the fun of owning an aro is watching it grow lol!
  13. LoL, we should take a photo of your fishroom as an MTS warning poster in LFS haha.. Just so people know what they're getting into! :sage:
  14. First time round, it took nearly a week of starving.. I think it was like 5 days. It's harder on the owner's heart than it is on the fish, I reckon, lol! Maybe they would be if live insects were cheaper lol. Any chance of getting superworms in NZ? Our mealworms are so tiny... Even after pumping them up they're only about half the size of superworms..
  15. To be honest, I think it's really up to the individual fish. I've seen so many videos on youtube of greens and jars coexisting with smaller tankmates, but my green won't have any of it lol. I've also heard stories of very vicious silvers, even though most would say that they are the most calm. Follow Henward's order of aggressiveness for a guide, but just make sure you have a Plan B before adding any tankmates. There's no point having tankmates with the aro if they are just gonna be constantly harassed and stressed. But I think that getting all the fish small and letting them grow up together has been successful for some people, so that might be an option?

  17. Henward, YOUR will is stronger than the fish's, remember that! Just starve it for 2-3 days at a time then feed it some pellets. I find it also helps to pre-soak the pellets so that they are softer - my green actually WAITS for it to soften before eating it lol. If he's hungry he'll just chow down, but then he'll wait a few minutes for the rest to soften before eating them. Be strong, it's for the fish's benefit in the long run anyway - don't give it any other treats, it'll just spoil its appetite. I'm in the process of re-training my green because I increased the frequency of the prawns and then he stopped eating pellets. Starving always works.
  18. There's ALWAYS going to be a tank empty calling your name lol.. MTS!!
