  1. What causes they cyano? Is is just phosphate/nitrates, or does there have to be a bacteria in the water too? I've never had it, and would like to know why it occurs so I can continue to prevent it.

Maybe they're scared - what else is in the tank? Do they have lots of hidey holes? If they feel threatened, they'll probably stay hiding. It's only been a week, so maybe they just need more time to get used to their surroundings?
  3. how could you say that??? I guess though, I don't really *watch* so much.... I attend the game and yell abuse at players/referees/spectators...and that I would totally recommend!
  4. Thanks for the tips - I've got PVC pipes, but I'll try the holes in the driftwood too!
  5. I'm sad Moss didn't play today. He's a legend. Mark did some awesome saves though. Man, Leilei's so fast, it's gonna be sad to lose him next yr.
  6. I'm so jealous you can make them breed just like that!!! I have 4 breeding size males, and 3 females, and mine wont do anything!
  7. Matthew, did you end up breeding your cardinals? I'm setting up a tank for my guys tomorrow...hopefully I can get them to breed!!! What does everyone use to keep their tank dark? I was thinking a big upside down cardboard box?
  8. football. They're the only nz team to play in the A league
  9. Went to the game tonight, and Phoenix won!!!! Best game ever, they played so well!!!
  10. Where did you get the barnacle shells from? They'd be perfect for my bumblebees.
  11. Did you actually see them 'doing it'? I can only imagine how that looks! I kinda thought that the female lays, and the male squirts sperm everywhere. Maybe not!

It's good to see that second auction has been removed. Hopefully the first will be also!
  13. Don't you wish they all came with f or m's on their side to help out? Maybe it's going to be best to buy a few more to get a pair? I was wondering about displaying breedig behavior too; mine show definate mating signs - chasing, digging pits and defending territories, but maybe not all pairs will do that, especially if they have no one to defend from. It will be good to find out what sex yours actually are, and if anyone else could add their observations. I'd also like to know about female rams laying together - hopefully I do have two girls!x

Can someone tell me what each of them are? I've never kept these guys, and am still learning about cichlids; want to get the right information the first time! Thanks guys
  16. My breeding pair (laid eggs, but not raised): Sorry about the crappy pic quality Male: Female: Both the male and female (sorry, can't see it in pics) have the dorsal spike, the male has a much more prominent spike. The male's dot is muted, with no blue spots in it, the females is brighter, with blue speckles. The male has the black smudge behind the black dot, and the female has one, but much more muted. The female has a pink tummy, the male does not. The female's pelvic fin is shorter and blunter than the male's. Ok, so that doesn't really help out here. I don't think the black smudge is a particularly defining feature; my last male had a black smudge too. I think the dorsal spike (much larger and more prominent on males) is an indicator, as well as the pelvic fin, pink pigmentation and black dot (blue spots or not)
  17. I think clown loaches are a good idea. Maybe some discus. They'll make sure you have lots of colour in the tank.
  18. His tummy isn't pink though, it's pretty dull coloured when the rest of his colours are bright. In saying that, you're right about the spike...
  19. I think a skull with a bubbler would be cool. Maybe some BIG rocks for him to hide in?? Maybe he feels out in the open.
  20. There were some at WetPets a few months ago
  21. The jebo/aqua one tanks are all inclusive tanks which have built in lights and filters. In my opinion the filters are next to useless and the lights aren't the best for plants. However, they do offer a tidy inclusive hood to make the tank look neat and tidy. I have 1 aqua one tank, and use an external canister filter on it, and can't grow plants because of the lights. The rest of my tanks are simple glass tanks, with an external filter and light hood that sits on top. A simple tank is heaps cheaper, and you can often find good filters on TM or second hand shops - I've found near new eheim canister filters in Cash Converters for $30 - they just don't know what they're worth. If you can get your hands on a plain glass tank (often you can get 80l for $60 new), stands and inclusive hoods are pretty easy to make if you're handy, or you can just have a glass top. I'd look into that before you spend hundreds on a tank.

Oh, I kinda thought that the males develop the eggs too. That makes more sense! Thanks for explaining!

Thanks livingart I've never understood how males are male seahorses if they carry the eggs and give birth to the babies...? Someone, please help this make sense in my head!

    seahorses

They kinda look like worms. Do the parents care for them at all, or just leave them? Are they egg layers? (showing my ignorance for all things in salt!)
