  1. No prob... Guppies are so easy when you understand basic genetics. I just don't have the patience!!!!
  2. He's trying to improve both the female and male lines though I think. http://www.arihood.com/azgenetics/genprimr3.html
  3. What sort of filter are you running? How big is the tank? I've found that if you leave your filter material for a while with a high stocked tank, the acids from the fish tend to build up and lower the pH.
  4. I have law exams coming up - and am actually in a lecture right now...my bad!
  5. Welcome to the forums! I'm sure you'll love it here
  6. Breed the prettiest together, seperate the girl and boy babies into another tank, when they grow up, breed the prettiest to the prettiest etc. There are heaps of awesome guppy genetics sites online.
  7. Silicone adhesive would be better than knead it - that's more for when you're attaching wood to glass. To colour silicone, you're best using a powder colourant, which doesn't affect the qualities of the adhesive (I think food colouring would)- there's a company in Auckland called TopMark which sells the colourant, it's pretty cheap, and 1 jar would do you more silicone than you'll ever use. The colorant graduals would be totally encased in the silicone, so wouldn't leach chemicals into your tank either.
  8. BN eat algae, other omnivorous plecos too.
  9. mrpleco, what are your caves made out of? I'd like to make something similar for my bristlenose as they don't like the caves I've got for them.
  10. I've got 3 males in with 1 female at the moment, and I've noticed the boys are lots more aggressive than they usually are (when they're in a tank with 2 boys and 3 girls). Maybe it's just my fish!

    Name That Fish #5

I know, I'm so jealous!!! I heard some kids on the train today complaining that they have to go back to school and their yr 11 exams are in a month and a bit or whatever. I just found out I have an exam in just over a week. Who knew!?
  12. Maybe they need more caves, or caves that are more suitable. How many females do you have? If you have say, 4 males and only 1 girl, I could see there being some problems.
  13. Could be some sort of bacterial bloom. Is it only growing over the DW? If so, I'd probably take it out and boil it, then pop it back in and see if it's still happening.

    green algae

If it's the green furry algae, BN will eat it, if it's the spots that are really hard to get off, think about covering the side that gets the most sun - Like Mincie said, a towel or something would block out lots of the light, or even close a curtain, and you can still enjoy the tank in the evenings.
  15. He's got 75kg of sand coming.... How are you transporting the sand? And are you going to put plants in? Any ideas so far for what kinda plants? And how are those tetras doing in the sump?
  16. I don't see why you can't use it. Wash it really throughly, and test the pH before you put it in with fish. You'll obviously want to get some that has no chemicals added.
  17. I've been told from good authority (a fantastic bristlenose breeder) that if they eat bad food, they can get a bad infection in their tummies, which causes them to get constipated, swell and die. I've had 3 go like that (not all at once, thankfully!) and it's really horrible. Give the tank a really thorough clean, making sure you vac the bottom, where all the bad food sits. You may find you can't help this guy, but by keeping the bottom nice and clean, you should be able to prevent it from happening again. If he is still eating, try some peas or something else that may help move his bowels along. Good luck
  18. They'll only grow as big as they can in the tank. How big is the tank?
  19. Yeah, my guys tend to breed on the filter intake, and I'm worried that all the babies are going to get sucked up. I might try the slate, thanks!
  20. I'd like to get a breeding cone for my angels, but I haven't seen any in Wellington. I guess I could use an upturned pot, but does anyone have any other ideas to make some sort of almost up and down surface for fishes to lay on?
