  1. I think they'd be ok in a 4ft planted, but I agree, in a small community tank, they do have spats.
  2. If you're going to get 2 4fts, I'd go for one e.yellow + dem tank, and then in the other tank maybe the bolivians, some blue rams, and some type of tetra?
  3. Sorry, can't help with FW shrimp, but I'd like to know where you can find them in Wellington too - I'm happy with SW shrimp too though, they're just feeders.
  4. I put a live crab in tonight (it only had really tiny claws) and they got its legs off really quick. It was some sort of crab that I found right on the shore (not sure of the name). The ones I'm worried about are fiddler crabs with their massive claws. I think I'll just have to put the smallest one I found in first. I want to put them in live; it's sick, but way more fun to watch, and it helps stop them from getting bored too.
  5. I went on a crab hunt today to feed my puffers, but I'm a bit worried they'll get nipped while eating them. Do I need to de claw them? If so, how do I do it?
  6. It's a fry that isn't fully formed yet. They do that sometimes when they drop their fry early from stress etc. It won't hatch.
  7. You should probably wait until they are over 3 months old so you can see what they're going to look like. Why are you so keen to sell them?
  8. Don't be offended here, but it might have something to do with the way you ask questions. You need to provide us with all the information you can so we can help. It also helps to search (there's a button for it at the top of the page) to see if people have had a similar problem. If we've all seen the question 10 times before, we're not going to answer it. Also, if you ask questions in an appropiate thread (not on other peoples unrelated threads) you might get a better response. Hope that helps. Mods - I'm not trying to moderate here, just trying to help out people who don't know better
  9. I'll sit down and watch them for a bit tonight and see if I can figure out if there's a pair in there. I might check the filter in the puffer tank too, and see if any got sucked in there.
  10. I agree with phoenix, I think it looks like heater burn. Make sure the heater is sitting off the bottom far enough that the fish can get underneath without touching the bottom of it. They're usually smart enough to get out of the way...
  11. Most of them are about 4cm, there's 3 males that are maybe pushing 7, but the largest females are only about 4cm. They've grown way quicker than I expected. I was really surprised to find the fry because I haven't seen the parents with them at all. I can't see them in the tank anymore, so I guess the puffers must have got them...
  12. I have some lionheads growing out in a tank and I just moved them into a bigger tank (and I had to make room for my puffers). When I was cleaning the tank I moved them from, I saw 2 or 3 baby fish. I'm 99% sure that they're lionheads (I'm pretty sure they're not baby angel fish - the lionheads would have eaten them!). So, my question is, how big/old to they have to be to breed?? Mine are only 4-5 months old, and less than 1/2 grown. I haven't noticed any of them defending a territory, and I can't see any acting as a pair.
  13. I'd suggest getting an iPhone...
  14. They'll be fine in a good current. Mine love swimming in the current. What about some sort of cichlid? You'd want smaller, less aggressive ones...you could get some gold rams?
  15. With awesome gravel like that you want something colourful. Glowlights and cardinals and other small tetras will school together.
  16. Usually around here we keep tanks with fish in them, so don't get white algae. Add fish slowly otherwise you'll get a spike. Filters don't start working unless there is food (ammonia) for the bacteria. When you add your fish, they will produce ammonia to feed the bacteria. You will probably get a nitrate/nitrite spike, so do water changes often to help keep them down. Aaron, search black beard algae, does it look like that?
  17. More blue rams!!! Cardinal tetras.
  18. Sure, blaze of glory and all that, but I'm pretty sure when I'm eyeballing ANY huge, powerful, fast cat that's growling at me, stroking my ego's not at the top of my to do list!! I understand the concept, but I think when it came to crunch time, I'd be too chicken!
  19. I had my first fish dream today - I had a nap in class (accy 111 is REALLY boring!) and I dreamt about cutting my puffer's teeth with nail clippers...I was holding it and a squeezed it too hard, and it popped out of my hand and bounced around the room like flubber. Now I'm terrified about having to cut their teeth (and I don't even have them yet!)
  20. Did you add any source of ammonia when cycling your tank? That's why you need to start the nitrate cycle. The white growth is probably some sort of algae that your fish will probably eat. I wouldn't worry about it.
  21. I just use tonic salt for my guppies, but for BB gobies and the GSP, I will use marine salt. Any tips on brands? And how much is it?
  22. I just read that whole thing and was SOOOO confused...Until I realised it said 'in season lioness', not sea lion   And livingart, come on, really, who's gonna run AT a lion!? I, for one, would probably need brown pants also!
  23. Ahem...I think you need TWO judges actually (yes, I did just make that up!), so looks like Ira and I are having a party!!
  24. So, I've decided I'm getting 2 green spotted puffers, and I'm just getting my brackish knowledge back up to date. I add salt to my guppy tanks now (a small or big handful depending on the size of the tank and the type of fish) by just chucking it in. However, I was just reading this http://www.fnzas.org.nz/salt.0.html and it said not to add straight salt, you should dissolve it first. Anyone who adds salt; what's your method, and why would you not want to add undissolved salt?
  25. I'd say under 30L...I guess it's different to every person though, some people have 1l nanos. The AR320s are often considered nanos, so maybe under 50l?
