  1. When your fish get more christmas cards than you. Yes, I'm serious. My fish got 3 cards, and I only got 2. None of the cards were from me, either.
  2. I think a key part of our justice system is the name and shame, that's why for the majority of crimes court records are made public. Would you want a person who's mismanaged funds to look after your money (a la Hanover)? Would you want a person who has inappropriately touched a child looking after your kids? Would you want to support a musician who acts inappropriately with girls? The 'prominent musician' is a prime example of where name suppression should be lifted - the victim has come out and told her story, and everyone knows who it is anyway. I think having name suppression in a case where you are a celebrity or well known figure is a joke because many people know who it is anyway (and can therefore identify the daughter) and people are even less on his side BECAUSE he was granted name suppression. Yes, Scottie, I agree that we shouldn't be on this wild chase with our pitchforks and burning torches until he has been proven guilty, however, police wouldn't have brought an indictment charge if they didn't think they had enough information to convict. This is a pretty serious charge, the maximum sentence is 14 years - I'm not sure simply saying 'I was drunk, I didn't know' will be enough for a not guilty verdict. My feeling is that he'll get rehab and a fine, probably be barred from being alone with kids under 12. If they do that, he's guilty, and officially becomes a sex offender.
  3. haha, I don't even think if they were fully grown they'd all fit in the tank, let alone thrive. I have over 100 BN and 50 guppies in a 3ft (900x400x400) tank. I think this is a really great application, probably less use for people like us who know a lot about our fish, but much more use for the average Joe.
  4. Okay, so a lot of my BN and guppies are babies, but I think an estimate of 771% stocking level is a bit high. I only top up the tank (it's a heavily planted tank), no water changes, don't clean the filters until the flow is reduced and feed heavily only once a week. In saying that, I know I get away with a lot that maybe shouldn't work in practicality.
  5. I heard the girl was 4, and was in the mothers bed (his partner), he came home drunk and didn't know it was her. I have no idea how far the situation went - him even touching her (stroking her back) would have resulted in this outcome because the police have to press charges if a complaint is made.
  6. Actually, a suppression order means that publication of the name is in contempt of court - one person telling another isn't publication, and therefore isn't a breach. It's a contentious point of law whether or not an individual saying the name on a forum is publication in breach of the suppression order - technically, if I was to say the name here, I would be defaming the person, but wouldn't be in breach of the order because my purpose was not to inform, but to discuss. It's a tricky point.
  7. In terms of the salinity change, the change in salinity is more because the bacteria in the filter can't handle the change - fish are able to handle much greater changes without a problem. I think it's the temperature change that stimulates the spawn rather than the reduced SG - can't be sure, but lots of other fish are stimulated by a change in temp.
  8. So, what do you think? Should he be getting name suppression? Sure, there's the argument that his daughter shouldn't be identified, but I can't help but think that all the hype about the name suppression makes it worse because everyone wants to know now, and everyone's talking about it. Also, if anyone knows who it is (I'm pretty sure I know, but I'd like another person to confirm my findings!!) pls text me - 0211382053.
  9. Hmm, I never liked coral in FW tanks for that very reason. It always looks manky after a while. Maybe try sitting it outside in the sun to bleach it?
  10. Did you watch mummy giving birth? It's pretty cool to watch, and see how quickly they all grow
  11. You can feed them all the bloodworm in the world, and they still might not eat it. They're trickly little grumpy men, and often will only eat live food. The trick with them is to feed them a variety, and try things like live brine shrimp (even frozen if you don't want to go through the fiasco of hatching them), bloodworm, mosquito larvae (leave a 50l tub outside with a couple of lettuce leaves in it, you'll have them in no time - or go to some secluded rockpools, there are lots in there), baby shrimp from the ocean, white worms etc - mine loved microworms. Watch them eating to figure out what they like, but make sure you keep a variety up. Ideally, you'd want to get hold of a refractometer (hydrometers aren't very accurate), because you could end up overdosing on the salt over time. I'd start with LA's suggestion, add a liter a week (just add it when you do a water change), and every 2 or 3rd week, increase the amount of salt you're using, until you're up to about SG 1.08 (the ocean is 1.26ish - so you're not looking for too much salt). IMO, everything will probably be okay at that SG (except maybe the whiptails and gourami's) but you'll really enjoy making a brackish species tank of them - they're amazing fish and have great personalities!
  12. I do the same thing but I actually have 3 heaters, 2 set at the same temp, and 1 set a degree or 2 lower. The chances of 2 failing are almost nil, and they are on separate circuits too.
  13. I've heard stories about outside bunnies doing the deed through their cage - you open the cage in the morning to say good morning to your solo, female bunny who you've had for a year or however long, and staring back at you are 10 baby bunnies!
  14. Oh good, it's not just me waiting with baited breath!
  15. I'm holding christmas this year - there will be a total of 18 adults and 10 kids - lucky we have a pool so the kids will be occupied. My dad just had a bypass with 5 grafts yesterday, so he can't travel for christmas this year - that means everyone's coming to my place. It's very scary holding christmas, but I've got a list of what everyone is expected to bring and hopefully it will all go according to plan - a nice sunny day where everyone can hang out outside rather than being inside in my tiny house! We're doing lunch at my place, then it's off to my partners family for a very small (7 adults, no kids!) and civilized dinner. We're having a boxing day thing at my place too.
  16. hope it all works out for you. I'm thinking it's not as big a deal as you think; chances are it's something completely different and you've just jumped to the wrong conclusion - here's hoping, anyway!
  17. Here's some info on my new tank setup Tank is 1500 x 600 D x 500 H, made by Pete at Port Nicholson Glass in Petone. I was originally going to get it made and shipped, but Pete matched the price and worked with me to get exactly what I wanted. My partner and I made the stand and it is braced both longways and sideways - here's a pic in the making of it: And the finished product - well, it's not actually finished, the front is going to be divided into thirds and the middle section is going to be black acrylic to match our TV stand I have a full syphon overflow, and a back up pipe: Here's the tank after it was first filled with water, with about 1/4 of the LR in it. And here it is this morning: LHS Middle RHS The lights on the top are currently t5s (approximately 300w) - these will be replaced with 3x 150w MH and 2x 54w t5s, and there will be a hood on top to match the stand. Current inhabitants: Pair of black clowns, Teddy and Boy Clown and their BTA nem 1 x damsel, Zippy 1 x cleaner shrimp, Barry + some corals - finger leathers, a toadstool leather, some other leathers, a hammer coral, some SPSs also. I currently have 1 powerhead in there but will be adding 1 or 2 more to keep the detritus suspended - I don't need too much flow at the inlet end because the tank has 16x turnover an hour, so detritus tends to settle just in front of the overflow box.
  18. Well, we've got the advice of 2 lawyers and are perusing an action for personal grievance for wrongful dismissal, as well as breach of privacy as they made an announcement to all of the team telling them why he had been fired (which makes it very difficult to be at work because everyone wants to talk to me about it and it upsets me and makes me cry every time). We're claiming for loss of income until he gets another job, then when he does, the difference between his new income and his old income until the time he told them he would be leaving (June 2010), an apology, a good reference, to tell the team that he had resigned rather than be fired, the shares that he would have been entitled to if he resigned and damages for humiliation, distress, and breach of privacy and legal costs. Any idea how much we should be asking for for the damages? We're not prepared to negotiate about what's written above, but we will negotiate on the amount of money in damages. We're thinking $1000 per year he's worked there for humiliation ($4000), $4000 for distress and $5000 for breach of privacy because it will potentially affect his future earnings as well as $5000 for loss of opportunity. This is $18,000. We're willing to negotiate (not down to nothing, but we'll see where it goes), but are also willing to sue them in tort for defamation, bring the Privacy Commission into it for the breach of Privacy, in contract for breach of contract and also report them to the labour department for breaches of the Human Rights Act, so we have a reasonable amount of leverage to play with. I am also willing to prosecute them separately for some other stuff they have done (on my behalf, not his) Does anyone have any suggestions or comments? Anyone who's been through this before, is this a reasonable amount to ask for?
  19. He doesn't want his job back - before this happened he felt like he was being picked on by management and knows it would just be worse if he went back. His biggest worry is that he negotiated so much with them to get them to allow him to do this job while he was finishing uni, and he's worked his bum off for the last few months of being in the leadership position and his personal life has suffered because of it. He had made a decision that because of the culture and environment, he was going to stay until he finished uni (his original plan that he told them about when he started the leadership job) instead of staying on and working his way into higher management which is what they hinted as wanting. We've made huge sacrifices for him to do this job so he has experience in the workplace, and it's taken a toll on our lives. We know that this personal grievance business will too, but at least if he gets an apology and a reference out of it, he'll feel vindicated that he did a good job. The store manager (who was undertaking the disciplinary procedure) even said that apart from this instance, he's been a model employee. The job was in retail in a major hardware store. I work there too, which creates more issues in the situation. I think legally, he has a very strong case - there are two parts to dismissal: The employer must: > have a good substantive reason for the termination (so in this case a serious breach of safety) and > have been procedurally fair during the process, including giving the employee a real chance to prepare and state their case without prejudice. I think our argument on procedural fairness is strongest, but we also have an argument that it was not a serious breach as most of the game playing he didn't even know about and the stuff he did know about was accepted by them as not being a firing offence.
  20. We're going to citizens advice tomorrow and community law. I've already spoken to some people from uni about it and am in the process of reading copious amounts of case law on the topic. From a practical sense, do we notify them of our intention to persue a personal grievance and give them our case, or notify them and lodge it with the employment relations authority? They are the very basic facts - the 'serious breach' was the team riding in a wheelchair.
  21. Not part of the union, but that shouldn't matter. I'm a 4th yr law student so I can do all the research myself, but I wanted to see if anyone out there's been there, done that with this sort of thing and can offer any advice.
  22. Does anyone know anything about raising a personal grievance for wrongful dismissal? Basically, my partner had a disciplinary meeting and was told that he would be told the outcome in a few hours (but specifically told he would not be terminated). During this period, more information became available to them, and they then called him up and fired him. He was a team leader and was fired for 'a serious breach of heath and safety' for not stopping his team from playing games that could have caused injury. Most of them he didn't even know about, and he had told them to stop. No one was hurt (or even came close). It was his first 'offence' - he's never had any sort of warning before, and the very same day another supervisor was not told off when he saw someone climbing on the racking at work and didn't say anything at all - but the person who was climbing on the racking was given a first and final warning. My argument is that in the disciplinary meeting, they even said that they couldn't take into account new information, which is exactly what they later did. Therefore, it was procedurally unfair. Because he was fired he has lost the opportunity for a reference, over $3000 worth of shares and other benefits.
  23. Yeah, I have been calling him but his phone seems to always be off!
  24. Has anyone been in contact with Greg in the last week or so? I've been trying to get in contact with him.

    I have discovered...

I used to live in Tweed road, and the T was ALWAYS painted out. Funny thing is it's right by the police college.
