  1. Wouldn't it be easier to just get some black acrylic and put it on the inside of the overflow?
  2. Maybe I should look at getting some for my new planted tank. I'm so confused by LEDs
  3. Oh I totally forgot about eheim internals, I might go check them out this weekend, thanks!
  4. I'm looking for a HOB or internal filter that has a good flow rate to provide a little bit of water movement and decent turnover rate. It will be going in a 50l heavily planted tank with a high bioload. Money is not an issue, but it MUST be HOB or internal as I'm trying to keep my system small so BF doesn't notice it. What do you recommend?
  5. I was going to put a few ottos in too to hopefully keep any algae problem under control. I'm a bit worried about ferts, but thinking of wiring all the lights on separate switches so I can reducing lighting if necessary. I didn't know there was a difference What *is* the difference? Wattage will depend on what size fits in the light hood I have.
  6. So in conclusion, 4* T5s will be A-OK? Is there a special colour of light or something I need? I vaguely remember nms and kelvins and blue and white and yellow and chlorophyll from 7th form biology
  7. I've had fish for years, but have never really had a beautiful planted tank, despite loving them. I'm planning on setting up a small tank for dwarf puffers and putting in some pretty plants for them. The tank is 60l and currently has 1x 15w T8 tube. I was thinking of putting in 4 x T5s. I'd like to put some java fern and ambulia and....actually, those are the only plants I know. So, questions: am I going to have too much light and blind my poor fish and kill my plants? are these plants hard to keep? what other plants might be suitable that are available here? The tank will be south-east Asia themed, ph around 6 - 6.5. Are any pretty red plants suitable for this biotope? what substrate is best for these sorts of plants? Thanks in advance
  8. I have an elite Style60. It has a 15W tube, which now flickers and is horrible. I thought about replacing the bulb and ballast, but I'd really like some more light in the tank as I plan on setting it up as a planted tank. The only problem is there's a sealed lighting unit behind the tube and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it off/out. Any bright ideas before I attempt to cut it off? Has anyone done a lighting hack on this sort of tank before? I'm thinking of putting in 4 x T5s. This baby's going to glow from here to the moon.
  9. A few years ago I had two beautiful Green Spotted Puffers. Here's a writeup I did on them if you're interested. The puffers died shortly after each other after kamakaze-ing through a TINY gap in the lid. I cried. Lots. Now I want puffers again. I'm thinking of FW puffers this time - maybe dwarves? Has anyone seen any in Welly lately?
  10. I'm in my last year of a BCA and law degree at uni, and passed NCEA with the equilvent of excellence, back in the day. The most important thing for me is to have a structure. So for English, say, you want to separate out all the different parts (standards? papers?) like poetry, novels, film, then break it down into each film you studied. From there, you want to break down into themes, characters etc - try to do each film/poem/novel on a separate sheet of paper, and colour code it. Once you've done that for each part, make a summary sheet for film, then finally 1 study sheet for all of English, which just has the main points on it. By the time you've broken it down them summarised it, you shouldn't have a problem with memory. Doing notes on paper (I usually use A4 paper and these pens, but A3 is good if you have big writing or really need more space). I also colour-coded the paper they were on, but maybe I went too far  The important thing is finding links, which is where colour-coding is great. Things like formulas, I wrote onto flash cards, also colour-coded - carry them everywhere. Practice exams are helpful to a) find out what you don't know and b) practice what you've learned and reinforce it. I recommend doing 1 practice exam before you start studying to figure out where you need extra work, then spend most of your time doing them right towards the end of your study period. This way of studying does take a reasonable amount of time, but it's very logical and it's the only way I've managed to get through university with the marks I have. If you have any Qs about this method, I'm happy to help
  11. Have you put it on google person finder?
  12. Does anyone have a number for a contact for one of the welfare centers? I can organise getting 10 phonelines down there that don't use voda/telecom networks.
  13. what on earth happened? Sigh, sometimes the interwebz drives me crazy.
  14. Yes, that's the original article I linked to.
  15. Anyone know anything about this? http://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/4414 ... d-floating
  16. Very true - I had 3 exams in 2 days - morning, afternoon, morning. It sucked so much, and I literally just slept for a week after
  17. If that's the case, your employer is acting unlawfully, and is issuing warnings without just cause. I think you're right, you would much rather sit an exam or 3 when they didn't matter to you. On the other hand, I would much rather work a full day's work (which I do; I have two jobs and work full time as well as studying full time) that spend a year learning a million things then being tested on them.
  18. ]I am establishing underwater rugby in Wellington. It is a big sport overseas, especially in Europe, and I would love to get it really off the ground here. All you need to play is togs, a mask and snorkel and fins, and to be able to swim confidently. We welcome people of all ages - none of us have ever played before, so it will be a learning experience for everyone. We will be playing at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre on Monday nights. If you would like to be involved or would like more information, please PM/email me. If you are in Auckland and would like to play, please get in touch with me also as I know some people up there who play also.
  19. Zip-loc bags? You get your fishy in its bag then what? Nestle it between the lettuce and watermelon in the car? Who would even take them?
  20. Also, Animates won't have to cover anything, that's why we have ACC. All of her medical costs will be covered, and the time she spends off work will be covered by ACC for 80% of her pay. It's very standard for employers to cover the extra 20%, especially if they had some part in the accident. In this case, I think she is more to blame than the store. I think twice about putting my face next to my own cat, let alone a dog I've never met. I don't put my face close to human strangers for the same reason; you never know when they might just lose it and bite. People need to be very aware of what animals do - the reality is, some animals, when they are scared, can bite. Why not take 2 seconds to talk to the owner - I doubt there is a dog owner out there who would say 'sure, rub your face on my dog, he loves people he's never met in his face'
  21. The iPad DOES have a headphone jack, and there is also a 30-pin - VGA adapter for it, so it does have video out, and TV out. It also has stereo speakers, and you can get USB and SD card adaptors. The HP TC1100 did not have a full touch screen, and has no bluetooth (wireless keyboard, anyone?), no 3G, no apps. The battery life is about 2.5hours v 11-12hrs playing video on the iPad. They are completely different beasts - and I think we need to remember that the TC1100 is not even made anymore!
  22. My bf has one, he's had it since about a month after they were released in the US. He loves it, uses it everyday. I've stolen it a few times to take to uni to write notes on, and it was fantastic. Wicked games too!!
  23. Why not just embrace it until you get a skimmer and scoop the foam off the top? That way you'll be removing the nutrients.
  24. However far out you think the tank should be from the wall, add 1/2 again. So if you want it 10cm out from the wall, add an extra 5cm for unexpected things - you'll always need it.
  25. The other thing to do with silicone is use an ice cube. The ice smooths the silicone perfectly, and no problems with getting it on your fingers. Even if you do, it wont stick.
