    ID?

ah. is this the fish that caused all the confusion? the one that was meant to be "Astatotilapia calliptera" (I just looked it up on cichlid forum) but isnt... but has to be cause someone said it had to be? I am very confused.
  4. WAIT!!! hold on. 7 betta females. 1 khuli, with more to come and some more cories. sorry i didnt read this bit before. Do not get red spot plecos unless you have a bigger tank already. there will be way too much going on in there. It'll just be a big headache for you.
  5. what mel says is only tooooo true. lots of mess, so lots of cleaning. I'd get one if you had to. why not just get bristlenoses instead?

ha ha ha ha ha. so what is this other morphed fish?
  7. lucky you lol, my good cleaning red spot was replaced by a lazy, good for nothing fellow who does nothing all day another replacement is on the cards, lol
  8. yes. unless the plants are well rooted, some of your plants may start floating. you should have a nice thick layer of gravel. they for some reason have a rep for destroying plants, but ive had many over the last few years, that i keep trading in for smaller ones, and ive never had a problem with them eating plants. :bounce: ... Thankfully. Also, give them lots of driftwood to hide in and rasp off, and they will leave your plants alone.
  9. I still have heaps of hastifolia, and a tiger lotus mother plant and 2 babies. ive got them in there for the time being, but it just doesn't look right. It has to be either completely planted, or not I think... or else it looks sparse, and that's like im not even trying! deshelling peas is my specialty, lol... not really.. all i have to do is soak em in water and give em a squeeze! :bounce:
  10. 6inches andi rehome them. ive seenthem at about 50cm,long on occasion
  11. THEY are peaceful. but they get massive .. well huge. so just know that before you get one. you have to be willing to find it a home eventually, and that eventually may come sooner than you expected  i keep rehoming my red spots from my 4footer.

    fixed it for you.
  13. Awesome, thanks Mystic. now to wait for the fish to arrive on tuesday, and plan on what else i can put in there to help with algae control. lets just say i shall be keeping a very close eye on the phosphate levels.
  14. so could spirulina flakes be used as the staple diet? how do i feed the peas? just chuck one pea in there and hope they can rip it up?
  15. v. interesting. I got tetra spirulina flakes (heaps of it so they will get that) and i will look at getting some rift sinking sticks. But I also have hikari, which i was hoping to feed them but I understand that it may cause bloat so I have to be careful with that. ATM I have 2 red spot plecs (good at eating algae off stuff), 1 gold spot plec, and 1 butterfly pleco, and am saving up for some more exotic kinds that don't need drift wood in the tank.
  16. Thanks smidey! Any advice re african tanks are welcome! What sort of algae eaters would be good? I was either going to get 6 GAE's or 6 ottos or something like that. I think I may even try bristlenoses in this tank, although I have never been able to keep them alive. The temp in this tank ranges from 27.3-28.5 deg C. But a UV filter is also on the cards in the near future... maybe.. as a last resort.
  17. well that's a terrible way of ID'ing an animal. It sounds like you have your heart set on red shoulders, so just wait and ask around for them. least then you will know for sure what you get.
  18. I thought he said the dog broke the glass? external force being the dog? or in my case - me skating straight into the glass. force being me
  19. you should! even if its DIY co2 running through the cannister filter or the ladder thing.
  20. I too once "made" a door out of a sheet of glass (be it a smaller one) Verdict- take it away, and replace every single sheet of glass in the house with toughened 15mm glass
  21. but that's what i said yes? or am i just being a bad student?
  22. I know some glaziers just cut the glass without telling people that cutting a hole in the glass compromises the structural integrity of the sheet. and then the really really old glass doors are made from really thin glass, so if your dog runs through the dog door, and is rough about it... the whole pane of glass could break.
  23. fish come on tuesday!!! im so excited! 25 dems and 12 e.yellows. then i may get more of each within a month or so.
