  1. (like a lolcat) That is one more pleco down. Only a few more to go
  2. That is one beautiful fish. How do they do in water that is 30 deg C?
  3. ah. its like re living msn all over again  I bought the standard 6 stalks off the trademe seller. ill grow it even if i have to make a new macrandra propagating tank.
  4. That one is such a darn pig. tsk tsk. it even tried stealing food from the plecos before i tapped on the glass and made it scat... nothing ever dares steal food from my precious catfish.
  5. I use an air pump to "uber aerate" when attached to a powerhead. provides flow and catfish like it i turn it on when needed
  6. Yeah, GAE's love the brown algae. 3 in my old african tank cleaned it pretty much over night. SAE's eat the greeny stuff.
  7. whoa. gonna have great fun watching them grow then! :bounce:
  8. how big is your chalceus? he looks like 4-5 cm?
  9. yeap, you have the tds part of the equation right. distilled water and de ionised water needs "stuff" in it to support fish life. you can use it to reduce tds, and soften water but experiment first and see what happens. the pH fluctuations would be something to note.
  10. 100% distilled water? fish wont survive. none of the electro-chemical systems would work, so osmoregulation wont work. AKA dead fishy in theory.
  11. nah. totally different. many places confuse SAE's and flying fox's so google them well before you go and buy some.
  12. he came with one. I keep him in it if i see a cat lurking around the house, and the windows are open, but apart from that he spends the day with his ball and hangs off the curtains, talks to his shadow, talks to dark corners....
  13. yeah, youre telling me. i mean for swords and ferns, moss etc, i can see the reason, but stem plants! man... oh well ill buy 6 stems and soon it'll be growing like a weed.
  14. any one have macrandra for sale? is $28 including shipping too much for 12, 15cm stalks?
  15. my fish can swim! i see the discus begging for food right now. I laid down 2 flat pieces of schist at the bottom when I did the tank up, just so that I would not fill the tank up like I did last time.
  16. 4ft. like 200 something L, although dixon differs with the calculation  (long standing joke). lots of plants, lots of catfish, lots of driftwood. awaiting discus.
  17. so my plant placement sucks? naah. i may do that, but after seeing how big a 4x2x2 tank is I really badly want one! then i can plant it well and be happy as.
  18. That is awesome. That cage is the Avione 604. It's the same one rusty has and is allowed to sit on top of (but not inside). It's a great cage, and the perfect size for pepper!
  19. you need more CL's! like 21 of them! :bounce:  looks great. add some hastifolia in there too.
  20. good idea, but genetics is a very important factor for birds in the wild, and for introducing bred birds into the wild.
  21. yeah. and you will continue to get the same response from this rude obnixous prat, although i did not mean for my post to be rude; i just can't mask my words and make them sound polite and diplomatic sometimes... too blunt as some people put it. your fish never have been and never will be cold water fish, just as i will never be an eskimo. I don't have any thing against you, but I do have something against cold water guppies, mollies, bn's, plecos and the like. If you knew and truly understood the physiological and biological effects of colder temperatures on tropical species (and vice versa) you may change your mind. my problem lies with someone new to the hobby going - hey i read this thing about cold water guppies, bn's etc, and then adding tropical fish to a cold water tank. I see this every week, and honestly there could be hundreds of fish in palmy(every week) alone that could have been saved, but were intoduced into cold water tanks. temperate tanks are fine, but cold water is too cold in winter for tropical fish. I know not all of us do not provide ideal conditions as they are in the wild, and instead compromise on an intermediatery - but i stand by my ground, and will continue to do so on this issue. PS- I have no problems admitting that I am up myself cause i know i am, and i know i can be a prat at times. im still loved though and im not all bad .. honestly.
  22. What about your search for answers when you are yourself acting ignorant? Its like we tell you something but you only want an answer that you are wanting to hear. can't help with that im afraid.
  23. the whole casing is replaced, you cannot remove just the tube light. the UV tube comes encolsed in that grey plastic casing.
