  1. That article was written a very long time ago. You don't get $5 cardinals any more. Your cardinals are bred in Asia.

  4. Ooo! you definitely should! :bounce: That would be awesome. PM firenzenz and ask if he ask some multipunctatus for sale. I am unsure about their snail eating abilities though. Small snails I presume will go down a treat. Clown loaches would be fine in pH 8 but I don't know about them living or being happy in water with a higher pH (and the associated harness) than that because I've never tried it or heard from any one who has.
  5. Royal Botia came in a few months ago and are really beautiful, but also very aggressive. The 30 I got in ripped up many many fish and finally were put in a tank by them selves.
  6. James, viewtopic.php?f=6&t=47295 There is a club in palmy.
  7. malevolentsparkle - Cardinals are not picky with their food and will eat everything from colourbits to bloodworms to what ever else all the other fish eat. Cardinals in NZ are not wild caught and are bred in hatcheries overseas - usually asia and come in the same shipments as most of our other fish. If they were wild caught you'd be paying $20+ each and get them at a large size and have to deal with a very high mortality rate. Red Whiptails and Royal whiptails can make holes in sword plant leaves, but again this is noted by some people who keep the fish, and not all. Some whiptails will eat plants and some wont. It's hit and miss and I don't think there is a strictly 'correct' answer for this question. I had a group of royal plecos (those german ones) and only one out of the group would make holes in a plant; needless to say he was rehomed. I know of a local person who has a red whiptail who does nothing but make holes in the leaves in her swords, but mine from the same batch did no damage.
  8. I turned off the first set of lights only leaving the rear set of lights on. Can almost see through this fella If you look closely you can see his belly, spine, air sac.
  9. I just had to say it ahhaha. I love that movie. saw it on youtube a couple of days ago. brought back memories of when all deers were Bambi.
  10. Even higher correlation between buying fish on a weekend and related fish deaths. what is the pH? 0.25 ammonia wont be toxic in a slightly acidic tank. You will need to answer these questions too if we are to help you discover why the fish may have died. also what filtration do you have on the tank? and what do you mean the tank had been cycled for a month before adding the fish? do you mean there were other fish n the tank for a month or do you mean you had the tank running with only water before you added the fish? Thanks.
  11. Sorry to hear, but 3 weeks is a long time and their death can be attributed to anything really. What are your water parameters like, how large is the tank and how many and which fish were already in the tank?
  12. Looks good. Will be nice when the plants fill in too. PS- your cories are fake jullis AKA Trillineatus cories
  13. Any pH under 7 is low and anything over 7 is high.
  14. No Joe. You don't deliberately reduce the pH of the tank unless there is a very specific reason for doing so. Breeders often muddle with pH to mimic natural spawning triggers. it is best to have a stable pH and pH6-7 is very good.
  15. yeah, I know all about jules verne! I must have read journey to the centre of the earth a million times! Read any edition I could get my hands on!! it was my fav book as a kid. Also liked twenty thousand leagues under the sea and around the world in eighty days.
  16. they don't leave much to the imagination do they?
  17. wow. Awesome. If she was a tropical fish the common name would have been galaxy something. I like the spots. Not as boring as I thought! I think I have seen a big one of these at the Napier aquarium. They sort of look like a schooling fish. I'll google them now
  18. OMG. This is something you learn when you learn the alphabet! I'm glad I did A levels.
