  1. The difference between the south african and american gangs amazed me. The south african gangs are mostly cape coloureds (mixed race people) who have been shafted by a white reigeme [apartheid] and are now being shafted by "a black reigeme" (his words not mine!), they are at the bottom of the poverty line and going to prison is actually an improvement in their living conditions. The american gangs looked like a bunch of dropkicks running around in what could have been a nice neighbourhood trying to emulate what they see in hip hop videos. They hardly seemed under-privileged in comparison to the south african gangs upbringing, and any poverty would seem [to me] to be self-inflicted by laziness or bad decisions. I actually kinda felt sorry for the guys in south africa.
  2. Canada has similar laws. Do you think either major party would risk introducing it at the expense of pissing off every cat owner in the country?
  3. There isn't a speedway in every suburb though! Where can you go where there aren't cats? Even in the country there are wild populations of cats. Perhaps the owners should contribute [or pay for] a fence if they're that worried about their pets. Or perhaps he could return the live cat after trapping it ... once the owner reimburses him for the damage done to the plants and greenhouse roof.
  4. Yes that is true, so what do you do, say 'yeah fine drop out of school and the nanny state will look after you'? Don't even get me started on the need for harsher penalties for criminals, especially repeat offenders....
  5. The article about the nurseryman vs. the cats must have struck a chord with a few people. I have to sympathize with the nursery owner. I work for a nursery, my boss has a similar attitude to cats because of the hundreds of dollars of damage they do by digging and defecating in trays of small plants, not to mention the number of leaks in the plastic greenhouse film they make. We go to a lot of trouble to cat-proof greenhouses to avoid this, but they still find their way in and it is impossible to stop them walking on the roof and ripping the plastic. So, cat owners, do you know where you cat is roaming to and what its doing? Domestic cats probably do as much damage to native fauna as the much-hated possums do to flora. BTW I live very close to the nursery, and we have a cat, still, luckily....
  6. It may work, but it may not. The main problems I can see would be that the oscars are quite aggressive feeders which may make it hard to feed the BGK, and the BGK wouldn't really stand a chance if the oscars turned nasty. up to you really.
  7. I agree Alan, but what Key is saying is that they're allowed to leave, but they must support themselves and not go straight on the dole because they're too lazy to get a job, or not willing to upskill themselves to make them more employable.
  8. Better get that big tank set up for the dats eh henward!
  9. Probably not when its four males and three females. If it was 2 males and 4 females....
  10. It certainly makes sense to me, why shouldanyone be able to drop out of school and live a useless existence at the taxpayers expense?
  11. I think they might help a few off-the-rails youths, but at the end of the day you can't regulate against stupid people. The best solution would be to stop paying them to reproduce and get tough [really tough] on repeat offenders. There are far too many people on a taxpayer funded roundabout of welfare and prison, and the problems we are seeing today are the first generation raised in that lifestyle. Just imagine what it will be like in 2-3 generations time...
  12. What about the tank? I'd possibly be keen for the knife. What about the new one you havent got yet??
  13. A friend in high school put superglue in his to hold them together. :-?
  14. Alright, I'll play... Taken at xmas up Mt Mania, Whangarei heads. yeah I need a haircut, I still havent got one tho!!
  15. Go for one of the smaller eels, there's a few that only get to around 12". A large tyre track eel will eat small fish and will probably uproot plants, and will outgrow a 320L tank. Loaches can eat/damage plants, but I have seen them kept in planted tanks, so it will probably be ok.
  16. Thats the problem, unless it is some sort of bacterial thing in the loaches that means they cant put on weight.
  17. I don't find the concept of national/cultural pride hard to understand, what I dont get is how some people think their country/culture is better than others. Look at the difference in response to the London bombings compared to 9/11. In London they were hardened by years of IRA attacks, and simply got over it and got on with life. Its nearly forgotten about now. In New York they were all shocked, how could something like this happen to "the greatest city on earth", etc etc. They're still making a song and dance about it and therefor Al Qaeda are still getting mileage out of it.
  18. They can easily get to 2'+ so not really an ideal candidate for a planted tank. Uaru's are one of the best plant destroyers I've kept, they ate everything, including the woody java fern stems, then started nibbling on the driftwood! I guess you just need to really think about which you would prefer and go for it. Don't try to get the best of both worlds.
  19. Wow, I guess he didn't have any sense of humor. I'm a big fan of Billy T. James because he didn't just make fun out of other people, but also out of himself/his people. IMO if you can't laugh at yourself you shouldnt be laughing at anyone else.
  20. I think you've missed the tone of this thread. We're not a bunch of peace-loving anti-american hippies (nor gun-toting bush-loving rednecks either), just having a little laugh at another country. It makes a refreshing change from mocking the aussies.
  21. Lesser 48? *warning, contains a naughty word!*
  22. My two ornates are in a temporary tank with only a heater and airstone, and get a daily 50%+ water change, so far the water seems good.
  23. And non-Americans are supposed to get that? :-? Its a pet-hate of mine that when Americans tell you where they're from they say 'Chicago, Il' or 'City, State', and just expect/assume that you know where the state is and that its part of America.
  24. I'm not American, but I'm still going to take the mickey out of anyone who doesn't know the difference between north korea and australia! http://www.shoutfile.com/v/gSfSsCpR
  25. Me neither.  But while we're taking the mickey out of the yanks...
