  2. What sort of tubes should I get? I plan to build or alter my existing hood so I don't want a couple of $80 tubes rather have 4-5 $15 tubes. Will this idea work what type of tube should I track down? I just bought some Ember tetra for this tank. Don't worry they wont be into it for at least a month or two.
  3. Hi All, I'm going to buy a shoal of Ember Tetra. I think they will look mint in the big planted tank. Has anyone on here kept them or bred them. Any hints? Cheers James
  4. Only a 2 tube set up at the moment but i'll add another 2 or 3.
  5. Well the tank is in it's new room and has 32l of daltons aquatic mix in the bottom and about 40 kg of black sand ready to go on top. Just need to work out what plants I'm going to use and if they need planted before water and sand goes in. I hope all the extra effort helps the plants to grow.
  6. Has any one ever kept small perch or Rudd in a tank? Is it legal? Perch are a cool fish.
  7. Okay there are some good ideas. I'm now thinking of a large school of rummy nose a gang of panda cats and or sterbie cats and a pair or trio of bettas to watch the Pantodon bucholzi butterfly fish. The butterfly is the only one I have not kept before. I hope it is not to hard on the rummys. Then with plants I think I want one to float with big leafs, some Anubias and some other plant to be a clean filler that offers little or no cover at the base. I want lots of plants but not so thick I cant see the fish. I would also chuck some plecs in there too. :bounce: or maybe I should just get some big fat arse fish and call him bud. How long could a arrowana be in a four foot tank for? I'm guessing only a year or so .
  8. ah silva cheers for that info. I was wondering how I could knock the psi down so I could use a boost solenoid and a simple timed circuit and 12volt transformer. This project may get out of hand yet
  9. Thank you. I could still use the soda stream bottle but fit it up to a defuser or into the power head air line all Macgyver style. I just don't want a bottle of goo sitting in my office. Is why I'm being different.
  10. Hi all, What would be the down side of just tipping a liter of carbonated water out of a soda stream machine into a 250l planted tank every other day would it help? Cheers James
  11. Hi all, I Have a spare four foot 250L tank that I want to set up. Only thing is I'm not sure what I want to put in it. I have kept tropicals for about 12 years now. I had been keeping Mbuna in this tank. Still have one cichlid tank. I know I want some plants this time round and want to use sand like Dalton propagating mix as the base. I'll need to get new lights I'm sure don't know what I have in this hood. So any ideas of style of fish or fish combo's. I do have to say I will work to keep fish happy and healthy so odd/hard suggestions welcome. Cheers James
  12. The loaches might run low on small snails there fav food in a 100l. But that is easy to fix. Good luck.
  13. Nice fish well done. If there are any heading down to Christchurch I would love to split the freight.
  14. Nice work Mark. Do you have the new tank yet?
  15. Over feed the other fish. Mainly the clowns just before lights out and see if that helps for a second night. Good luck
  16. How long do Otopharynx lithobates hold for is there anything special to do with raising there fry? any help is good they are my favorite fish and I have one holding at the mo

    silica sand

try pool filter sand it's about 1.5-3mm. Works fine in my tank. Plus 1 bag at $25 was all I needed for my 4 foot tank.
  19. Wow thats mint so many are breeding. We need to get a few more colonys going down here in the south island. I would love to see some picks of the new fry.
  20. The male crabro would always be the boss. The arartus are quite peaceful to all other species in my tank. I'm sure some would disagre, I think keeping four or more in a breeding group are good they tend to loose interest in the other fish types. I have very little agression in my tanks.
  21. wish i had a arowana
  22. I had a look at the sand at placemakers but then went for a pool filter sand it is whiter and a little chunckyer. But it stays clean and the fish love it. Plus it was only $30 for 25Kg
