when ur filter bacteria gobble up the nasty chemicals like nitrates yes they will turn them into nitrites but when this bacteria dies it will be realeased water and there is a limit on how much bacteria a filter can hold(as u will know the more the better) i feel safer cleaning my filter out every month (getting rid of a potentail source of poillution)

hi thanx 4 the tips are clown loaches particulary sensitive to salt? im sure i read somewhere that they are ? as for breeding i thort that was nearly impossible. i tried to catch him again last nite but no luck the disadvantage of having heaps of plants and decor

i have 2 clown loaches in my community tank they are both around 10-12cm long they have been good up until now , 1 has become really agressive towards the other and scratches and bites it chasing it around , the wounds have become infected , it has cloudy white patches and some fin rot i am separating it 2nite i have some furnace to treat it with (furnace is like furan) will this do the trick? ane help would be great, will also raise the temp in the tank . as for the aggressive one left i dont know why he started getting like that , maybe recent lower temperatures caused breeding behaviour? im not sure i have heard they are better in groups i dont know if this is true or not i would like to get more but the lfs's here only have small 1s lately and idont wana put them with my badass 1

if it is a moonlte u are after i just used a 12'' neon lite designed for cars u can get various lengths and u can get them at the warehouse and supercheap auto just connect them to a 12vdc transformer they dont draw a huge amount of current . i guess leds are easier to source a power supply 4 i ahve built an led system 4 my small goby tank i will post pics when i get a chance it uses 10 brite white leds nice colour and plenty of lte a lot more than the 4w tube it used to have
-
cool i will try that i also came across a floor paint today its a waterbased epoxy i didnt know u could get this i will ring the manufacturer 2moro and ask bout it it had no solvent smell and very little of the epoxy smell u get with other products , it may even be suitable to use with normal paint tints i will find out

HELP i have a heater set up at 22 degrees and
spoon replied to Cookieskennels's topic in Beginners Corner
i think anething under25 would be fine (dont qoute me on this but higher temps may mean higher metabolism, shorter lifespan?) when i move my goldfish go in with my tropicals as i get 1 tank setup then put all the fish in there then set the other up and put the tropicals back then take the heater out, my goldfish tank gets up to 23c in the summer aneway more if the curtains open, also u c plenty of shallow garden ponds around in full sun (normally coated with green algae!) these must reach a reasonable temp during the day -
im still waiting 4 my epistixx clear to arrive when it does i will do some experiments with sand and maybe crushed glass i will also try coating first and then paintingthen coating again . by dry ragging , do u mean giving it a wipe with a cloth just before its set?

nasty wee fish they can be bad fin nippers

i have a cf1200 running 4 about a year now i have found that it doesnt fiolter really fine stuff as this tends to just get around the baskets however this stops after a week as it starts to get blocked up , also if u mount it below the tank in the cabinet flow rate will never be anewhere near 1200 l /hr the hose must have been 20cm long and no filter media when they measured that but i guess u get that with most filters

i did the same thing i have bout 50 3-4mm now having been feeding them finely powered flake u can buy (made by jbl cant remeber what its cald) i had heaps survive last time too
-
u could chain an ordinary light fitting above the tank and attach it to thge ceiling with the proper hooks no wiring would be necessary just plug it in as normal , however u are allowed to wire it urself if u feel u are competent enuff but i dont recomend it unless u really know what u are doing and i somebody gets hurt from ur wiring its huge fines, i just sat the lite on top of my exoterra another thing u can get is lites made for all glass aquariums without hoods they click on at each end over the edge of the glass and are adjustable for length
-
yeah they great i have bout 50 more babies about 3-4mm long
-
i just brought 1 off ebay changed the sand to normal river sand i will have to adjust the flow a bit, im using my canister filter to power it i mite have to put a powerhead on to make it work better otherwise is working fine . i also had to change the outflow to stir the water surface some more as it used a lot o oxygen with all that bacteria and my fish wernt happy next morning. customs also tested the sand 4 drugs lol

cheers 4 the hints im goin to buy equius epistixx clear as the company rep thort this would be suityable after doin some research said it may turn yellow but that wont bother me as its over dark paint will double coat and sand back with wet and dry to kill the gloss. i rung norski they said their 421 epoxy would be ok but didnt know how this would go over acylic paint or vice versa, equis said will go on fine over acylic but acylic paint on top would be hard to key in so it sticks (again wet and dry mite remedy this) i will soak it in a bucket of water 4 a week once its cured and wash it thourghly b4 siliconing it in im in no hurry because i have microscopic minnow babies in the tank i want to put the first 1 in, i will post a pic of the project now i have completed painting it with acrilic in next few days
-
ok cool , i have spoken to 2 people who used to build them down here in chch but are not willing to tell me what they used 1 said experiment with epoxy
-
here is some pics ane way so far

polyeurethane hmm? i made a wooden hood and polyuerthaned it i had it on my old goldfish tank, the wood was untreated otherwise. condensation collecting and dripping back into the tank ended up poisening most of the fish this is theclear poly mind u, i also looked into swimming pool paint with is normally a vinyl (or epoxy) as i used this to paint the brine tanks at talleys fisheries(used to freeze tuna) so im assuming its food safe(maybe aquarium safe) but then who knows with talleys track record
-
marine paint isnt that normally solvent based and not acrylic? i rung epiglass techinical services during my research and asked about marine paint they said not to use their paint unless i wanted chips with my fish

i have painted the tree root 1 i carved , im going my own route as far as methods go(keep the gud ideas coming tho in case my way doesnt work), i found painting it hard work so a dded a small amount of wetasil (wetting agent 4 plants and sprays , non-toxic.) i found this help let the paint run into the small gaps between the polystyrene, i am actually amazed taht it is turning out so gud so quickly. i will expoxy clearcoat it after painting (am going to investigate this 2moro) as 4 it turning out shiny and fake looking i will c how it goes , if it does i will try fine wet and dry to rough it up a lil, or failing that i can get free clear bottle gl;ass crushed to a dust and sprinkle that on the wet epoxy
-
sorry to open another post on this subject bnut i have to be sure! i have just carved out 2 polystyrene backgrounds out of two inch thick sheets , i have been researching what to paint it with as lfs is not willing to divulge this information, i am possibly going to consult the chemist who came up with resene paints formulations(i have no idea wat paint is made from , do U?) before i do taht would ordinary acrylic paint covered with an expoxy resin be safe? if anebody knows or has ane other ideas let me know please,
