According to his post, the primary reason was because he was tired of cleaning his gravel. Switching to just a UGF would make it so ALL the crap in the tank went into the gravel, none of it would be sucked into a filter. IMO, that would be making it worse. Most of the tanks I've seen with UGFs looked like they used a substrate of mud with a thin layer of gravel at the top.
My few bits of info...They like fairly neutral PH, relatively cool, I'd guess around 20ish? And heaps and heaps of current and oxygenation. They're mountain stream fish, hence one of their other names, hillstream loaches.
Just corrected the thread name in case someone wants to search for bristle noses in the future...
(Ok, it's really because it being "Brestle Noses" was getting on my nerves, but that's not a good enough reason. )
You could grab an inexpensive powerhead and use it as a booster pump. SOmething like a Via Aqua VA1300 is pretty cheap and would be working at a negative head so you should get good a little better than either the powerhead or cannister are rated at.
As far as FW fish in the same tank with the tinfoil barbs there's some big silver sharks, if I remember right, a huge pictus? and a handful of other big fish. They also have a heap of redspot and common plecos along with rainbows in with an alligator.
Next day you've got off have a look through the phone book for landscaping places and quarries in your area and have a drive around. Hopefully you'll find something that works. Though, you'll burn up more in petrol than the sand will likely cost you.
That's why they have thermostats. Assuming everything worked correctly you could put a 10,000 watt heater in the tank and be fine.
(Of course, in reality that wouldn't be advisable)
I do have snails, shrimp, tubeworms, a crab and a handfull of polyp thingies in the tank...But I can't make it out to get more water until next weekend.
