  1. And being easy to catch might just be luck...Err...Or skill. I once spent 10 minutes chasing my silver sharks around the tank. Got Bridget to have a try, she caught all 3 in one swish in about 10 seconds.
  2. No tank NEEDS a skimmer, any can be done without one. But, I bet a good skimmer might work in a brackish, if it does it might be worth doing.
  3. You can get multimeters that should be able to measure the amp draw of the lights from Dick Smith for something like $10. Or just loook at the specs for the light, as long as the amp rating of the power supply is well over that you have nothing to worry about.
  4. Hmm, mine's not very slippery. Works well enough for turning flake into dust for fish fry anyway.
  5. Or you could just get a single blue cold cathode. I think if I make another moonlight that's what I'll do. Though, I've gotten a LOT better with soldering since then...So It's only likely to take me 10 times as long to solder up a bunch of LEDs and 2-3 third degree burns.
  6. Definitely sounds like cyano. Very common.
  7. Well, we're not allowed to post a company's contact details on the board...But...
  8. Good luck finding metal halides in a hardware store. And they come in lenghs of Ummm...I dunno, about 3 inches and 4 inches.
  9. Metal halides would be best for the planted tank, regular T8 fluoros for the unplanted.
  10. I got mine at Pak N Save. Marble, I think it was something like $10. Not exactly expensive.

  12. I use ASW because for me it's about a 45 minute drive each way to get NSW. So time+fuel=more expensive than ASW.

    pH question

I never replace. JUst top up. It's pretty foolproof, unless you go nuts with the amount of grit it's going to slowly go up a bit above neutral and after a while slowly drift a bit below neutral. Just check the PH every few weeks if you're worried about it, which you'll need to be doing if you're adding baking soda anyway.

    pH question

I use bird grit, easier to find than coral sand. Handful of coarse bird grit in the filter works for ages.
  15. I wouldn't bother with computer fans, go straight for a small desktop fan. You can get them for much cheaper than a computer fan especially once you include the transformer. I've got a little desktop fan, was something like $10 at the warehouse moves heaps of air and is pretty quiet. Been running for a few years now non stop.
  16. Philosophers and mystics have been asking that question for thousands of years...

    Rock

Yeah, slate should be fine. You don't get much more unreactive than most slate.

    Macro Algae??

    Bryopsis, I think.
  19. Look in the yellowpages for moving companies. You're not going to be able to move those tanks with just 2 people.
  20. Plants don't need UV. Certainly not the UV that metal halides give off which is UV C which is what UV sterilizers use.. And you need to make a distinction between single ended UV bulbs which have an integrated UV filter and double ended bulbs which do not. And pretty much any double ended MH unit will have the UV filter, which is basically just a piece of glass.

  22. Plug the ports or drain the water level to below them.
