  1. I learnt the hard way. Do not take short cuts with tank repair. I HAD a second hand 1220x650x700h 500lt tank with a chip on the bottom edge and a small crack(about 120mm long) I was given a large piece of 10mm glass to cover over crack, Siliconed down , wait 2 weeks filled , waited a couple of days ... no leaks sweet! Set up with rocks ,coral, etc ,, added fish over the next few weeks , breeding going on every ting fine.... then....drip,drip, drip, bugger!!! Long story short many lost fish ,ruined stand , and a new run from the chip out and along the middle of the bottom all the way to the end . Should have replaced the entire bottom..eh, The first crack was no bigger though! New tank looks nice.
  2. I have not spaced gaps for joins, but the biggest tank I made/rebuilt was only 3 ft
  3. Just a comment not a critisism , but wouldn't it be better to remove this one from the gene pool. Kinda like those awful (IMO) looking up google eyed goldfish.
  4. CLEAN glass before assembling tank. Much easier than after. I mask glass 10mm from edge ,more where the other glass butts (thickness of glass plus 10mm) this makes for a neat clean edge of silicon. remove tape before silicon sets up. Tricky. Clean up with meths. Assemble back to bottom then ends then front. top braces after first lot of sil. has setup. Works for me. Important to use only Aquarium rated acetic cure silicon.eg, Selley,s Glass Silicon Sealant etc. Masking tape on the outside will keep everything together, a sharp razor blade will clean any smudges off after everything has cured . Remember to leave alone for at least a week after building, to allow full strength.

    Tropheus dubosi

You could get all 10 and as they mature and develop into breeding age move on any that are getting knocked around or not maturing as fast. If you want to breed from stock that is probably all from the same brood, that is.
  6. Damn! that's a cool tank, might just start a new christmas wish list LOL
  7. You could get a piece of ply the same size as the bottom of your tank .put this on first then poly then the tank.t for peace of mind.
  8. I guess it is only the males that have the colour.?
  9. Cool, thanks for that. Are you breeding any? Was thinking of e. yellows for colour, but these are nicer I think.
  10. Dumb question....are the Lemon Jake peacocks? scientific name? Thanks Ant
  11. Have PM'ed you. 8321731, 021024 33188
  12. I paid bugger all for it off TM . It was faulty, I had my money returned, They didn' t take the filter, then I fixed the broken impellor and had it running on my grow out tank. Works fine but tricky to start. Free to good home. (westies are all good LOL)
  13. Hey I'm out West too. I have a filter I ran on a 3ft you can have if you want to pick it up. Small external with spray bar and two pick ups.
  14. Yes I have recently got the CristalProfi 500 of TM, It appears to be good value for money. Next to the Fluval 404 I also am using it moves more water( expect this to drop as the media and sponges grow their "gunk") The top seals well and the baskets inside seem to be tight fitting, I am happy with it, That price includes a basket of ceramic noodles and a bag of bio balls! ( $180+ delivery) Also 500lt tank, rift lake africans

    High pH..

I have 1 male and 2 female BN's in my rift lake setup, no problems, in fact the BN's have spawned and the fry are being looked after by dad and will probably end up as a tasty snack when he has had enough! Also in there are 3 syno's ,they seem to be more shy , but are real characters when feeding. I do believe that the bristle nose's eat the brichardi fry at night, this is something to consider if wanting to breed.
  16. In mine I hasve , Shist, granet, slate, pumice from Taupo, Some other rocks from Taupo and coral from LFS, You can also use terracota field tiles or plant pots , almost anything to make caves. Keep the water right and the fish look after themselves. Oh , also have PVC conduit siliconed together with rocks glued all over them, BN's breeding in it now.
  17. No duck weed, Pretty sure there is no snails. Occasional drowned weta though! PM me for address or ring 021024 33188
  18. Do you have any problems with sunlight from the window?
  19. I have a large amount of Jasva Moss outside in a container if anyone wants to come and get it. Pick up in Massey
  20. Yep, mine too! I have had 5 or 6 spawnings now in a mixed African setup, and the smaller offspring will protect the next brood. I think they let their guard down at night though! If every one of them lived I would be looking after 200+ by now.
  21. A tip I use with canasters is to fill them right up ,including hoses , and then siphon the outlet into a bucket before turning the power on. Sometimes two or three bucket fills before all the air is out off the hoses and the filter, but is better than trying to run an unprimed filter pump!
  22. Nice size tank! Good dimensions for surface area/volume. My tank holds a bit more but I have a Fluval 404 and I have just set up a new JBL CristalProfi 500 ($180 retail off TM) and man it pushes some water!, your filter needs depend on what fish ,and how many, you plan to keep.Running two similar sized filters side by side is a good way to compare different brands.
  23. Jansens in Lincoln Rd, Henderson have a large tyre track eel in. Don't know how much.
  24. I had blue rams, my favourite dwarf , but found they got either withdrawn or overly agrressive when I had cribs in there. 160lt community tank. I lost most of the rams and gave away the last two. However cardinal tetras with the blue rams are stunning , a large group will often school in a straight line from one side of the tank to the other. neons never seemed to last too long for me. Pearl gouramis are characters and look awsome ,especially when coloured up for breeding. Enjoy your research
  25. Yep thanks, they seem to have settled down already.
