  1. I used clear tape in places that are not obvious. Residue comes off easy with meths.
  2. Yeah atm I have 20mm poly around the sides, back and base of each tank. I am getting some to cover the front and top at nights.
  3. Awesome thanks for that explanation Ira.
  4. I am curious as to how much energy a heater in a tank actually uses because the heater is not on all the time. And one would assume that a higher wattage a heater is rated at then it would heat the water quicker, and therefore use less electricity to maintain the tank at a specific temperature. Is this true? The energy calculators online seem to assume the heater is on every minute of every hour, which is not the case. And a lot seem to work on a basis that you only use the heater 6 months of the year. My 300W heaters seem to come on for 3 minutes with a 5-6 minute gap at the moment. Sure it would be more frequent during the frosty nights. Has anyone calculated the energy used to heat a specific tank volume and maintain it at a certain temperature? For instance: a 300W heater in a 200L tank heating the water to 25*C, with the room temp at 15*C.
  5. Well in three weeks my 2 apple snails ate these entire plants: 3 amazon swords a square foot of crypts 10" of anubias and a 2' tank worth of java moss. Sure I let them eat my throw away plants, but I have no more extra plants to give them. They are now on a diet of cucumber, spinach and carrots. Oh well.
  6. I agree: Do not get any redspot pleco's. It is your job to clean the bottom of the tank. Not the Cory's job. They eat food, and not other fish excrement and dirt.
  7. If you did mean oxygen: If you have adequate surface agitation there should be plenty of O2 exchange and you don't need to add it. A spray bar is ideal for this. On a side note - having an air stone in a large tank provides little oxygen anyway. The bubbles need to be very small, and slow rising for there to be enough time for the oxygen in the bubbles to dissolve into the water column.
  8. Are there any aquarium plants that Apple Snails will not devour? I love my apple snails but I love my plants more. I want to have them both in the same tank..... Wishful thinking?
  9. Why is a big fish as live food "poor", and yet feeder goldfish and the like are not "poor wee things"?
  10. That is a great aesthetic you have created with the layered rock. I love it.
  11. I found aragonite sand in a pouch inside your filter helps buffer the water more effectively once you have a crushed coral substrate. 2-4 cups of A.sand in a pantyhose leg, and replace it every month because it builds up a bio film. But don't throw it out, wash it and dry it, then use if the next month again.
  12. OK. I don't like Dolphins. I guess more Pictus it is then. .......goes away to look under the couch for a few more pennies.....
  13. I have a 4' tank (325L). It will have 3 pictus cats in the bottom half. I am looking for a suitable tankmate. People have suggested a cichlid - but which one? Also I was thinking of a red tail black shark as an option... What do y'all suggest?
  14. I set up my first 225L tank by buying it piece meal: Tank $100 (110cmx45cmx45cm) CF 1200 $112 Heater 300W $19 Gravel $10 Aquaone dbl 4' light used $40 I got the tank built for me and got the rest brand new from TM.
  15. rofl I love that story every time I read it.
  16. I have no idea what it is made of. I take off the weight from the plants. I find it looks better with a small flat stone etc to hold the plant down until it grows roots. Most plant I have bought have had enough roots already not to need weights.
  17. The majority of 'lead' anchors around now are not actually lead. but if you were to only leave it in a few hours I wouldn't worry. I use a fork instead, works well.
  18. Red and Blue lighting, along with some colour enhancing food addition.
  19. I would recommend you get jbl root tabs and some Flourish Excel for liquid carbon source. Also you could get regular Flourish supplement which provides some micro nutrients. Other than that I would not dose a 60L tank with macro nutrients regularly. There is too much room for error which would leave you with an imbalance. There is a strong possibility for that to lead to an outbreak of algae. Plus adding a lot of nutrients costs money, and in such a small tank you would be taking out plants every week and throwing them away. So IMHO it would be more advantageous to spend money on things like yummy eats
  20. Yeah my cat is deathly scared of the chickens. He always gets attacked by them. LMAO. Mmmm you have me inspired. Roast chicken for dinner for me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
  21. Actually if it was a normally farmed chicken fed pellets it is omnivorous, tending towards carnivorous. The pellets we use from a major supplier are 44% animal protein and can't be fed to any hooved animal. But this means they have a lot of meat on them! Mmmm tasty.
  22. I emptied a tank and used hydrogen peroxide 30%. Squirting it directly on with a syringe. I had to do it a couple of times.
  23. T5= tube diameter = 5/8ths of an inch. T8 = 8/8th inch or 1 inch diameter tube. I take it xs = excess Kelvin rating is usually the last digits of the number n the outside of a tube. Usually 840 (4000k) or 865 (6500k). 8 refers to the version number of the tube. Kelvin is the temperature of the light produced. 5500 - 6500k is normal daylight temperature in which plants are able to utilize this light for photosynthesis.
  24. Hi Crayfish. Welcome to the forum.
  25. You only get too many snails from a glut, or over supply of available food. The easiest way to reduce (and maintain low) snail populations is restrict food supply.
