  1. My trifasciata spawned yesterday but I don't think I'll successfully raise any fry as I currently don't have a spare tank to put them in. Although I've ordered my breeding tank which have been meaning to get for ages although I couldn't find somewhere that could do it for a good price. I'm getting it from Petworld in Christchurch. $260.00 for a 650x500x500mm tank, 10mm glass, ADA-style and low-ion glass for the front panel :happy1:

Yay we have Broadband and Freeview, as well as a new computer screen :happy1: Thankyou Grant for installing it

Just been fiddling with my new Aqua Medic OceanLight 1x 150w HQI  Brand new, $165.00 incl. shipping off TradeMe. Have a look at it on some of the USA and UK online shops, it's much more expensive. The seller must have got it wholesale from somewhere or direct from the manufacturer to be able to sell it that cheap. The actual fixture has a funny plug but it plugs into the ballast which has a NZ plug so I don't need to worry about an adapter

    New Killi Tanks

Wow those are so cute! Although I'm no killie expert, I think those will be great for breeding killies, although just stick to smaller species.

I'm really enjoying my Apistogramma trifasciata. They're actually nicer than my original pair that I got from Redwood Aquatics in 2010.

    Plant ID

I used to have a bit but I lost it as my lighting wasn't strong enough. It was $7 for a pot which is a good price and I got it from Organism. Cyperus helferi is nothing like the plant in the foreground of the photo you posted. It looks more like the plant to the left of the rotala in the pic, in fact that may even be Cyperus helferi although I'm pretty sure it's val. If you want something like Blyxa japonica, I'd go for the E. tenellus tenellus, it's the closest match you'll be able to get in NZ. Here's a pic of one of Amano's tanks. The grassy plant used is E. tenellus tenellus.

    Plant ID

That's Bylxa japonica. Sadly it's not availible in NZ. It needs very high lighting, either T5HO's or metal halides, lots of ferts, softish water and a nutrient-rich acidic substrate. Echinodorus tenellus tenellus is similar, although it doesn't grow quite as dense and it's leaves are more curved as opposed to Blyxa japonica, which has leaves that are quite straight.
  8. Wow very interesting keane910 and supasi, I never thought a true stargrass carpet was possible. I might have to give it a go one day

    Fish ID please

Bottom two are both black widows, a long-finned and a short finned one.
  10. White all the way man  It will be an awesome contrast the dark furniture
  11. You could fit three pairs plus a few pairs of other Apistos and dwarf cichlids in a 400L tank! It would have to be well-furnished with plants and wood though because they like to have their own little territories
  12. OK here's the pics. I took them last night. I could only take pics of the big male because the other one is in the net breeder, and the females were quite hard to photograpth because they hide quite a lot.
  13. Got my two pairs today :happy1:

Just finished acclimatizing my Apistogramma trifasciata. They are tiny compared to the macmasteri! The smaller male has quite a yellow head, and the bigger one has an almost completely blue head. Maybe there were two batches of fish in the import? Because they both look very different.

The courier didn't send my fish so they're back at Jen's so I'll be getting them tomorrow.
  16. I'm completely sick of all this world cup stuff. It's driving me insane! Every second ad on the tv is about rugby, and a lot of articles in the newspapers are about rugby, and they've even put world cup flags up around the town. I'd rather clean up bird excrement in my aviary than watch the world cup! I don't even understand the concept of rugby - why not just give them a ball each so they don't have to fight over it like petty little kids?

My Apistogramma trifasciata are arriving tomorrow :happy1: :bounce: :happy2: !drool:
  18. Maybe we could start an FNZAS fish import fund thingy so people could donate money to getting new species imported?

I went to Cheviot today to visit my dad's maths teacher, Tony Burnett. I had a very interesting conversation with him about all sorts of various topics
  20. Cool thanks! I need some catfish at the moment with all my algae problems

  22. Wow that's quite nice and rather unusual. Personally I prefer starlights though which are availible here and I'd like to get some eventually.
