  1. Also last night I dropped in some spirulina algae tablets, the clown loaches didn't seem to touch them.
  2. Sadly have to go from 4pm today wont be back until about 11pm, is it ok if I feed at about 3pm? Do they need to be fed at a particular time?
  3. You mean the clown loaches will notice it first? Cheers
  4. Definitely lots of plants, they totally absorb all the nitrates in my tank.
  5. There's medication you can buy from a pet shop, I had to treat my tank a while ago, made my water very green, but will go away with water changes, and it seems to have killed the fungis.
  6. Hi Was wondering how would I go about feeding frozen bloodworms to my 3 clown loaches I got yesterday, they are like chocoloate and was told 1 everytime, 2-3 times a week. Do I need to thaw them first? Or can I just drop the cube straight into my tank? Also, most importantly, how do I make sure the clown loaches get their share, other fish will probably eat it as well, and there are LOTS of other fishes, 20 neon tetras, 16 white clouds, 5 lepoard danios, 6 swordtails. Cheers
  7. where are you putting the heaters? They need to be in a position where water is flowing through it so it heats the water as it passes by, this way warm water is distributed evenly throughout the tank. But say if your heater is in a position of very still water and the thermometer is on the other side of the tank, then you are going to get a warm end and a cold end. The heater automatically detects the temperature of the surrounding water, in the case above the surrounding water will be the degree you have set but the water far away from the heater is still not quite warm enough. Hope this helps.
  8. I got 3. They are really super active, darting up and down on one side of my tank for about 2 hours now.
  9. They are out now, though still sticking close to the cave they were hiding in, already find them amusing.
  10. Geez they ARE pretty shy. As soon as put them in the tank within 2 second they were out of my sight and found themselves a place to squeeze into.
  11. Just got the clown loaches, gotta say they look awesome, much better in my tank than in the tank at Jansens They still in the pet shop bag at the moment going to keep them in there for 20 minutes, hope they don't get whitespot, tank temperature is at 24.5 but I turned the heater up to 25 a while ago so tonight the tank should be at 27, my heater is 2 degrees out. Anyway hope they'll be ok.
  12. quarantine it first definitely. watch the other fish closely as well, not an expert on treatments but that's what I would do first.

    Algae

how much plants do you have? if it's just a few than normal flourescent bulbs is fine but if lots of plants the it's better to have something like Arcadia freshwater bulbs, they are expensive though a 2-foot bulb is just over $40.

    Algae

how old are the bulbs? if the bulbs are too old, i.e. over a year, they will lose their intensity (not visible to eye), will help algae growth rather than plants. If they are new bulbs try shutting down one bulb for a few days or shutting down the whole light for a day or two to break the pattern and interrupt the growth of algae. is your tank near a window which allows in plenty of sunlight?

    Algae

how big is your tank? and what lighting do you have?
  16. Cardinal tetras are very expensive. At Jansens they are $6.99 each, compared to a neon tetra which is only 1.99 each.
  17. I've read somewhere, can't remember where, that hot water from the tap contains more ammonia? Don't have an ammonia test kit should really get one, got a pH and nitrate.
  18. Hi all, me again When I change 15% of the water weekly in my 135L tank, should I be worried about the temperature fluctuation? When the new cold water comes in and mixes with the warm water in the tank the temperature usually drops 2 degrees very quickly. The heater has to slowly bring it back up again. Mainly worried about the neon tetras and the clown loaches (might be getting 3 today). Would this sudden drop in temperature stress them out too much? Though it will be over in a few hours and temperature will be back to normal. Cheers

    Algae

I've got 3 small bristlenoses, I find them good at cleaning slime and algae off the glass but not too much off the leaves. A few ramshorns might be better, what I do is put them onto the most algae infested leaves straight away and they will start cleaning.
  20. My tank isn't too big that's the problem. I think it can handle 4 small clown loaches at a max, though I will start with two, see how they go and add another 1 or 2 sometime afterwards. My tank surface area measure 75cm X 40cm, it's 135L, so not big enough for a big group of them, also got lots of plants in it which might reduce swimming area by a bit. I'm going to rearrange the plants tomorrow though to free up a bit more space.
  21. That's bad news Right now my tank is at 25 degrees, or very close, about 24.8, even though heater is only set to 23, it is a 150W Jebo. If I have to heat my tank up to 28 degrees all the other fish won't be too happy, I have already got 20 neon tetras and 2 more female swordtails. Won't be getting anymore danios or corys though.

    feeding

goldfish grow very big, they are best in ponds when they get big. I moved to tropical fish about 2 months ago and never regretted it, if you have the budget to spend get a big tank, with lots of plants and set up a tropical community tank, it'll look awesome.
  23. most times our personal experiences are pretty much the same as what you will find by typing "bristlenose catfish" into google. At least 2 full pages of useful info.
  24. still not sure if bricks are a good idea, they are too powerdery for a start. what about a few small rocks tied to the wood and bury the rocks in the gravel so you can't see it.
