  1. Last water change was last wednesday, since then ammonia dropped to 0ppm but has picked up again unfortunately, highly suspect the ICH medicine. Will do one tomorrow unless it stays the same or begin to drop which in that case will do it on wednesday, which makes it a complete week. I actually most of the trumpet snails died of cold temperature before I added a heater, about 2 months ago. Before that my tank was at about 14 degrees.
  2. Re BK Yes I put in asbout 30 malayan trumpet snails long long time ago, pretty sure most of them are dead under the gravel as I see a few hollow shells now and then, do see the odd ones out at night time though, even yesterday a fairly big was was visible on the glass.
  3. David R is correct Not only it deserves a death penalty, it deserves a very painful deathly penalty.
  4. When I'm home I check my tank every 20 minutes lol. So far can't see any dead fish.
  5. Tested ammonia this morning this morning and it's still the same as yesterday, 0.5ppm or slightly above. Will stick with the Eheim for now, going to do a 25% water change tomorrow, but if it doesn't rise or even drops a little I'll do the change on wednesday, which is exactly 1 week from last wednesday when I did my 25% change. I doubted my tank is overcrowding biologically though, just thought it's better to have a bit more variety rather than 2 lots of schooling fish in big numbers. What about a male siamese fighter? Just one, some of them look great with their colours. cheers
  6. I get that as well on my rimu lid, I just wipe it off everyday, sometimes there is no condensation when it's warmer.
  7. Also could it be my filter is not enough for the number of fish I have? It's rated for tank up to 160L, it is an Eheim 2010 Pickup. But considering the number of fish I have am I better off upgrading to a larger filter? I'm thinking of an Fluval 4 Plus. BTW sold my 16X white clouds, still in my tank though, planning to get some corys instead. Or a female siamese fighter if they are ok for community tanks.
  8. They are known to be terrestorial and aggresive in most cases especially when they are larger. So most suitable tank campanions are larger fish or at least of the same size. What about an albino rainbow shark? Still an semi-aggresive fish but doesn't seem to be as aggresive as angelfish.
  9. That's a really big tank, I would go for 2X 200W. I keep my bristlenoses at 27-28 degrees, a bit towards the higher end but they are doing very well and growing nicely. 22-23 would be a good temperature to keep both brisltenose and borneos in.
  10. Few weeks back I added fish too fast as many of you may already know, but about 10-11 days ago ammonia was down to 0ppm for 2 days continuously and also 0ppm nitrite. 3-4 days ago I tested ammonia (I do everyday), and found levels rising slightly, yesterday it was up to about 0.5ppm or maybe even slightly higher. Any ideas for why this is happening? I havnt cleaned my filter at all for 4 weeks now, maybe I should give it a rinse? Also last wednesday and last saturday I did 2 full doses of ICH medicine, ICH is defintely gone now, but maybe the medicine killed some of the bacteria? Thanks for any ideas.
  11. Or maybe put him in a seperate tank for a little while until it heals. Should be ok though they normally heal by themselves, had a neon tetra lose an whole eye a few days ago, seems to be doing fine.
  12. 4.0ppm is a bit too high. What's the size of your tank? I would change some as soon as possible because fish can't survive too long at 4ppm.
  13. Mostly likely harmless. Your fish might even eat them, live food. But still I would try to remove them or at least most of them if you can.
  14. You can't heat up a tank in a few minutes even if you wanted to, unless putting it on a stove or in a fireplace. Fish won't mind a few degrees increase over the course of a few hours, but they will mind a sudden decrease, so after the treatment slowly drop it back down, one degree a day is fine.
  15. Little guy was fine yesterday, but at about 10pm, when the lights are off I noticed him near the filter not moving much, looked like he was going to die. But this morning I was pleasantly surprised nothing was sucked up against the he was swimming fine with the other tetras.
  16. I'm having the same headach right now lol, planning to get a bigger tank in a year to two years time but thinking about it right now! I think this is what I would do, hope it gives you some ideas as well. I have a 135L tank and a 60 litre backup tank. 1. Do a water change just before transferring. 2. Fill up the back up 60L tank with water from my current tank, transfer all the fish temporarily into the backup tank. 3. Put the remaining water into the new tank, put the old tank away somewhere, setup the new tank with a new bigger filter as well as the old filter, this will speed up the cycle, also top up the water with new water in the big tank. 4. After cycling the new tank put the fish in a few at a time. There are probably better ways this is just my current idea on how to do it, will be different when I actually come to doing it and getting more advice on how to make the whole process quicker.

    I Think.

Yup good site indeed, though I wish people would post more, both new topics and replies.
  18. Maybe one of my other fish somehow torn it out? One of the clown loaches I've noticed yesterday were up the top waiting to be fed like the other fish and it keeps on going for the small fish (not chasing), just turn its head and the small fish would swim away. the bigget clown who is dominat (I think), when eating the algae disc it would not let anything else touch it, if another clown tries to eat the same disc, the dominant one would chase it away, this is when the smaller fish get a chance to nibble at it. So maybe a clown loach is the culprit here?
  19. Just noticed one of the neon tetras has lost an eye!! Swimming near the bottom of the tank, not as active as the others, I can understand that I wouldn't be either if I've just had my eye torn out. It's not damaged, the entire eye ball has gone out of the socket. Still have one good eye left. Anything I can do? Or should I just let him be? Thanks
  20. Tank is 120-135L, depending on how much I fill it up, right now it's 125L. Currently have a 150W heater and it's on 95% of the time, probably more, its winter in AKL but cold like a few days before, at night the temperature even drops half to one degree. Currently it's set at 27.5, but heater won't stop working until it's 28. Even when it does stop, it turns back on very shortly and stays on for a long time, usually happens at night when the fireplace is going and rooms warms up. Was thinking maybe a 200W? It's more powerful and probably will end up being on less and actually cost less on my power bill? Thanks a lot.
  21. Don't get scared by my calculations though, realistically it will be less. I just always assume worst scenarios for every situation to make sure that I can accept the outcome if in fact the worst scenarios happens.
  22. I'm still waiting for mine to start growing bristles. Biggest one is about 4cm long, got three of them, hope at least one is male lol.
  23. For a tank that size there will be a fairly significant increase in power bill, not massive as said above. Filter let's say it's 25W (probabably won't be), will cost about $4 a month. Light lets say 120W, on 12 hours a day, about $8 a month. Heater you need 300W or even 400W (2X 150W or 2X 200W), in summer it won't be working much, approx. $25 a month, in cold winter conditions, assuming it's on pretty much all the time, $50 a month. Plus some air pumps and other little pieces another $2 a month. so worst case scenario, in the coldest winter, it will cost approx. $64 a month, but otherwise under normal spring/summer conditions, be about $35 a month. These calculations are estimations based my power charges, if you get charged lower, it won't cost you as much. But regardless I think $20 a month is too little for a tank that size, majority of the power bill comes from the heater.
  24. Sometimes you have to blame it on bad luck I guess. I've heard once someone fed courgette and the catfish simply ate too much, got a bloated belly and floated to the top, but came right after a while. So maybe feed courgette a bit less?
