Got these shots tonite. Am transferring these guys into a bigger tank and have been thinking about possible tankmates for them, would like some of the not too super Agggressive cichlids for them. They are currently in with some Tetras and each other.

I agree with Evil - for all of this chemistry I'm thinking the only recipe is for disaster. I can only speak for myself but the only real problems I've had is when I dicked around with my water too much. It seems to be gettinig very complicated for a tank that doesn'y have fish yet.

Nice 1st shot of the BN Dixon, I wish my one had such nice clean patterning Hey Caper Most cameras will have no flash mode- you'll probably find it in menu set up. look for a flash symbol within a circle and bar through it. Being meaning to ask how you get on getting fish up your way. I was in Halifax last year and couldn't find much there, but should have done a tad more research. But beautiful part of the world for sure, Lunnenberg, Annapolis Royal etc. Had plenty of bluebeeries and Lobster, and those crazy!!! tides. A couple of shot I took-check out low tide on bottom right.

Good to hear, will have to keep an eye out for some more. Really interesting mouth on them. What size is the galaxy Phyrestaata?

Most of the fancy plecs we get here are of the minimum size, that is the importers order the real juvis( sometimes there a a few sizes available), as they are the cheapest and because our market can't really support more than $150-$200 by the time they reach retail. I would suspect that would be the sort of price unless your talking about zebs and some of the other $$$ plecs

Hey Jasmine Both Hollywoods have regular jacks about the two inch mark. Are you going to house them seperately from the blues? My blues are growing well at around 3 inches( i got the smaller lot which were brought later but relessed first and IMO were better ). Toying with the idea of getting some regulars to grow up but don't want put with blues as it would be silly to lose a $80 fish to a $10 fish, and when the time comes I'm sure I'll find a regular Jack female of breeding size easy enough. Was however disappointed to see the state of the EBJD's at HFF Mt roskill today. Dark and stressed, too many in one tank, over half with 'popeye' , something they are easily prone too and is as easy to fix. The smaller ones look undernourished and being picked on terribly by the tank leader, one had a strand of silk plant wedged in its mouth. Damm- had to go outside and checked the sign didn't say Animates.

We get Scobiancistrus like L253 and Goldie plecs that get to 30cm. I have a L75 that will get to 25cm as do the nuggets, magnums etc, in fact most Fancy's max out around that size. Doubt that there are many of the big hypostumus sp or big panaques like L203 around unless mixed accidently with something else. Imagine that 50cm Titantic at the bottom of your tank.

A Vampire or Galaxy would be cool Snookie, might deal to some of those snails in my discus tank. Don't think Leporacanthicus is on the list but you never know what you might get let in as there are so many black with white spot plecs. I have a couple of L254 that were brought in as something else. here's the Male

Whats with all this butt crack stuff! and why didn't I get a copy of the shot. This thread is a load of Cocka Bully!!!

Baryancistrus species like Gold nugget and LDA33-snowball so gets to 25-30cm. Usually called Magnum here (no chocolate jokes Caryl), likes a bit of current and is one of the more outgoing plecs. Omnivore so varied diet.

I have a couple of royals 15-20cm in length and I would probably put it under more stress if I fumbled around with them in nets, they wriggle and tangle themselves, their dorsal rays and pectoral/cheek odontodes get trapped in netting In fact I handle all my plecs of all size as shown, with forefinger and thumb. This is not something I would ever do to any of my other fish, nor do I go down to the corner shop with them like that. Next time try it and observe the fish's behaviour once put back into water compared to agitated mood after a net. I agree it shouldn't be done as a party trick.

not sure, the stuff to get is the aragonite which you would get in a small bag from LFS. Try garden Centre though.

Cool info Ryan. A shot of my display tank, and I agree with Ryan it is a bugger to get a good one. All my buffering comes from substrate, coral rock in the tank and then finger coral and limestone chip in the filter. This get PH to 8.0 which I'm OK with as I'm on Tank water so my PH is naturally low compared to most town supplies. Not sure on hardness, but I suspect a little on the soft side. I have in the breeding tank some limestone rock-7kgs of beautiful white rock I lugged back from south of France in a suitcase. I smashed a piece up for the filter and that gave me ph of 8.4. We are lucky here in Nz that even our tap water is in pretty good nick.

Be interesting then to see how this big new Store of theirs in Albany turns out. Maybe i can get a car battery, groceries and fish all at the same time. Does anybody buy fish from Animates now other than Tues-Thurs. Any other day and they just aren't competitive. Pricing Cardinals at $10 each when they are $3.50 wholesale. Sounds like they are trying to make up for all the fish they kill.

There's a big pair of Jags on TM.

What to do when you have found mosquito fish/gambusia
firenzenz replied to paul_r's topic in Freshwater
See if you can get some formalin from a local pharmacy, tell them what it is for, and send a preserved sample(s) to DOC if you are so inclined. That would be the best way they could get an ID. Does sort of look like a wild guppy though. -
Set it up as a planted community tank. That lets you pick and choose from a huge variety of fish that you can try out, even have a couple of 'Hero' fish in there. You can always specialise down the track. A species tank wont give you quite the flexibilty. Whatever you choose its always fun shopping for new fish.

Reef, Do you know where to get a copy of the list. I presume you are referring to the one that has been put together and apparently already got green light from MAF, with Erma to follow As for tank crash. I've mentioned the story to a few, including a Zeb owner down that way. Apparently this guy has the worst luck. He manages to have and breed all these amazing fish yet they all miraculously disappear or die on him. Hmmmm!

Squat or deformed bodies, kinked dorsal ray and things like wonky adipose fin can just be a deformed individual, but they are also 'flashing beacons' indicators of hybrids when dealing with synos. The clowns I've seen in shops have differed in spot size and some didn't have extended leading dorsal ray as they should. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... cies_id=84 This was the only Syno I was aware that used Leopard as a common name. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... ies_id=549. Do you think this looks like yours Pete. Unfortunately it becomes all the more difficult when no scientific names are being used when selling fish, sometimes that in itself is an indicator. It took quite a while for my Angelicus synos's to come out from their hidey holes, but sure is a treat when they do.

Fish in last photo with dark blotches are Otopharynx lithobates. http://www.cichlidforum.com/profiles/re ... ?genus=141 On e of the mbuna crew will know exactly what blue you have. cobalt, zebra etc. Not sure about the peacocks in top photos- body shape isn't quite right so may be a hybrid of some sort. Were they labelled as anything?

No 134's over here as far as I'm aware, in fact we have very few peckoltia spp that make it here. Apparently there is the possibilty of more fish being added to to allowable import list. There is a revised list around OK'd by MAF, and this includes plecs. But the market for fancy plecs is very small so that doesn't mean we will be overun with choices and some plecs wont be imported still, as are just too expensive by the time they get to market.
